Good Afternoon Woodson,

Issue identification, committee meetings, bill development, debate, final voting, and students in business attire. We had it all this week as our social studies department hosted our Model Congress, which is a simulation of the process the House of Representatives goes through to create and pass a bill. I want to thank our social studies teachers Mr. Rosebrock, Mr. Mesa, Mr. Hettler, Ms. Pollack, Mr. Wright, Mr. Hedrick, Mr. MacNabb, Mr. Glander, and Ms. Thornton for providing such an engaging and enriching activity for our students.

Today, during our Student Rights and Responsibilities mid year refresher, we reminded students of their responsibility to arrive at class on time. We are fortunate at Woodson that the vast majority of our students are in attendance and punctual. Please check your students' attendance in ParentVUE and speak with your student if they have numerous tardies and/or absences. We want to finish this school year strong!

As winter sports wind down, I want to share our continued success and congratulate the following groups:

  • The Science Olympiad team took first place in their region and will be heading to UVA in April for the State competition!
  • The Rifle team won their regional title! We also celebrated the team’s seniors last night and wished them well on their next step.
  • The Deaf Academic Bowl team was the regional runner-up in their competition in Atlanta GA this past weekend and will be moving on to Nationals in April!
  • Girls Basketball competed in the state tournament for the first time since 2008! We are so proud of our Lady CAVS!
  • Track and Field finished their state competition strong with a handful of top 3 finishes and school record breaking!
  • Our Theater team will be in Charlottesville this Saturday (V. Earl Dickinson Building) for the State Theater Festival, where their performance of The Elephant Man will be competing for a state title!

To get pumped up for our FanQuest on Saturday, March 9th, we will have a spirit week all next week. To start it off, we will be wearing shirts that spread positivity and inclusion on Monday. Please check out the rest of the spirit days below and come out for the tailgate at 5:30 pm on the 9th, and the main event at 7:00 pm.

Don’t forget, we will have a student holiday on Tuesday, March 5th, due to the election.

Have a great weekend!

As part of the AP African American Studies class examination of the evolution of African American music, Mr. Brock led students in a house dance lesson, guiding them through movements of the social street dance style born in underground clubs of Chicago and New York in the 1970s and 1980s. House dance blends different ethnic, cultural and musical styles, especially the influence of Afro, Latin, and jazz roots, using footwork and improvisation to create an expression of groove and community.

The survey will take about 10-15 minutes to complete and will be available in 10 languages. Please visit the Family Engagement Survey webpage for more information. Your voice matters!

10. Counselor Corner

Counselors completed academic advising meetings with Freshmen yesterday on Leap day…we needed the extra day! Each counselor will be calling in students who have not yet had a meeting to select classes for next year, so please remind students to look out for passes from their counselor. After every student has been seen, counselors will review course request change requests and update SIS accordingly. Our counselors have seen 1,890 students in 5 weeks for Academic Advising! Thank you for understanding that we have been meeting with students and have not had regular access to email. We will respond, though it may be delayed.

The Academic Advising padlet has helpful info regarding grad requirements, course sequencing, Academy options, Summer Learning, Dual Enrollment and more. Families have until March 14th to request course changes for next year’s classes. Afterward, decisions to close or cancel classes based on enrollment requests will begin. Students requesting summer classes may click here to register. Students requesting Dual Enrollment classes must apply to NOVA and enroll in the DE portal by March 22nd. This is a firm NOVA deadline. The deadline to enroll in an FCPS Academy class is March 6, next Wednesday. Please email your counselor if interested in an Academy class.

Tuesday, March 5th, is a great time for students to take a career assessment in Naviance, or peruse their grade level padlet on the Woodson Student Services main padlet. Students could log into their College Board account to view their PSAT results and work on skills review. The testing padlet has great resources as well.

Reminder for Juniors to mark their calendar for April 3rd, Junior Focus Day! They will choose 3 sessions to assist them to reach their post-secondary goals. More information will be shared with Juniors and their families soon.

Attention parents…we would love to see you in May! Please complete this google form if you are available to volunteer to help proctor AP exam(s). We are grateful for the help, as we have hundreds of students testing from May 6-17th, and cannot do it without you!

Cav Kudos is back! Faculty and Staff nominate students that have been seen doing an act of kindness, which is reflective of our school’s mission of creating a healthy environment of mutual respect, responsibility, equity, and inclusion.

Previous News, but still important, is now located on our Woodson website here. 1. Message from Mr. Greata

Good Afternoon Woodson,

Tonight is the night to celebrate diversity and cultural richness at Woodson High School! Join us as we embark on a journey around the world through tantalizing cuisines and captivating performances at our annual International Night. Let's come together to embrace the beauty of our global community starting  with our potluck at 4:45 pm, and the show at 6:30 pm . Huge shout out to Annie Hadfield and Lee Hedrick for their support of our students in our For the Culture Club!

This week, our staff gathered for our annual Black History Month luncheon to reflect on the profound impact of Black history, connect with each other, and to build community. This luncheon has been a favorite event at Woodson for the past 19 years. We are so grateful to Darlene Sheppard for her tireless efforts to organize the luncheon as well as Kenika Coles Wawryzniak, Eugene Cox, Eric Pilson, Rick Mey, Maria Lopez, and Jeff Tiller for their contributions to this amazing Woodson tradition!

Our student athletes continue to excel at the regional and state level!  Let's give a thunderous round of applause to the following student athletes:

  • Swim & Dive: Nathaniel Grannis (State Champion, Dive), Taityn Speier (5th place, Dive), Relay-  Riley Peters, Emma Casas, Soleil Clifford and Lyla Devlin (3rd, Swim),  Brady Bauernshub (3rd, Swim), Girls Swim Team (State Runner-Up)
  • Wrestling: Rafael Pena (4th, 215 Weight Class)
  • Indoor Track, Top 5 finishes from: Ashley Lofton, Kendall Anderson, Hadley Vanek, Celia Dawson, Keira Arenholz, Anna Strafford, Penelope Elliott, Colleen Gilbert, Taityn Speier, Justin Anderson, Zain Elcock, and Barret Pullen

Girls basketball continues to pursue a regional title at Robinson Secondary School at 5:30 pm tonight, where they will compete against West Potomac. With a win tonight, they will compete in the regional finals game on Saturday.

One correction to last week’s weekly, our one act actors will be performing The Elephant Man in their state competition on March 2nd, in Charlottesville, VA.

I would like you to be aware that this week, we have strategically shut down different bathrooms due to several instances of property destruction that have needed repairs. While this is a necessary measure, we also hope it is a temporary one.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Update: Previous News, but still important, is now located on our Woodson website here. 1. Message from Mr. Greata

Good Afternoon Woodson,

The safety and security of our school is our number one priority and it requires a culture of safety where planning, training, communication, and, most of all, teamwork are routine. This week, we celebrated Officer Issa on School Resource Officer (SRO) appreciation day, who is a vital partner and teammate in this work. We are so lucky to have Officer Issa here at Woodson, who is always measured and responsive. Thank you Officer Issa for all you do!

Another key partner in keeping our school safe and secure is our families, who we rely on as partners as we work to address tough issues, such as the hate motivated graffiti we have reported. The ideas and guidance I have received from the community has been invaluable and helps us navigate these difficult and complex issues. I know that with our continued partnership we will be able to overcome any challenges we face.

Our families provide support in so many ways and it is always appreciated. Our PTSO announced the recipients of the spring PTSO grants, and they were able to meet every need! Then, our staff was “treated” on Valentine’s day with a note of appreciation and a sweet treat. Thank you so much!

Our award winning one act play, The Elephant Man, continues to win awards!  Congratulations to Chris Rushing and his Regional Champion One Act actors, who will be moving on to the state competition on March 2nd, in Richmond. A huge shout out to Silas Blocker who won best actor in the regional competition for his role as the elephant man.

We have several singers set to sail off to Louisville, Kentucky later this month. Congratulations to Sarea Manson and Carson Fenner, who will be representing Woodson in the Southern Region SATB Youth Honor Chorus, while Kirsten Lunsford and Serena Mancuso will represent Woodson in the Southern Region SSAA Honor Chorus. Students were selected by audition from thousands of applicants across thirteen states - Congratulations!!

Ryan Chelline, Karine Jelalian, Sonan Sahgal, and Maggie Smallwood will also be heading south this month to the Academic Bowl South Regional at the Atlanta Area School for the Deaf in Clarkston, Georgia. Congratulations and thank you to our coaches Julie Clinch and Shan Pillai.

We have girls and boys regional basketball on Saturday at 12 and 2 pm respectively, and spring sports tryouts are on Monday the 19th (Presidents Day)!  Check out woodsonsports.com for details.

Have a safe weekend!

6. Eating Disorder Parent Information

In 2013, Virginia passed a law requiring every school system to provide information to parents annually about eating disorders with parents/guardians of students in the fifth through twelfth grades.

According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA 2023),

Eating disorders are serious but treatable mental and physical illnesses that can affect people of all genders, ages, races, religions, ethnicities, sexual orientations, body shapes, and weights. In the United States, 28.8 million Americans will suffer from an eating disorder at some point in their lives.

There is no single cause of an eating disorder. Rather, it is a complex combination of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors that converge and set off an individual’s predisposed genetic vulnerability.

In collaboration with the Fairfax County Health Department, FCPS has developed a web page with detailed information and resources about eating disorders.  To find out more, please visit the FCPS Eating Disorders website.

In addition to the information on the FCPS website, the National Eating Disorders Association has a toll free, confidential Helpline, 1-800-931-2237.

Update: Previous News, but still important, is now located on our Woodson website here. 1. Message from Mr. Greata

Good Afternoon Woodson,

Did you remember to wear purple today? Our P.S. I Love You Week culminated with hundreds of purple pupils, post it notes, and hot chocolate, all with the purpose of promoting good vibes. A big thank you to our leadership classes that worked hard to organize this fun and meaningful week!

I was able to spend the 100th day of school (yesterday) with many of our student leaders as well as some of our newest students. We forged some new connections, learned about one another’s hobbies, and shared some tips and tricks for Woodson, including how to get involved in a club. We also heard from our new students that they feel incredibly supported by our teachers and welcomed at school. That was great to hear!

CAV Kudos is back, and today we recognized students leading by example and sustaining a CAV culture that is rooted in helping one another and random acts of kindness.  I want to acknowledge Deb Glover, our student services administrative assistant and school spirit guru, for her hard work to reignite this important program!

As National Counselor Appreciation Week comes to a close, we want to acknowledge all the hard work of our counselors and their dedication to our students. Their jobs are so multifaceted and they often make the difference for students.  We are so grateful!

Our science teachers also make the difference every year by organizing the science fair at Woodson. Thank you Laura Barry, Lauren Kinne, and Sara Duarte for going above and beyond to provide this tremendous opportunity and, really, life milestone for our students.  Check out our student recognition page to see the names of our school level winners that will be going on to regionals in March.

Our students never shy away from tackling the hard issues. I am always impressed with our students’ willingness to engage in tough conversations and work towards solutions that impact our entire school. This week our leadership classes hosted a town hall to discuss various issues in our school. I was impressed with the level of maturity and sensitivity with which they engaged in discussion, developed solutions and articulated actionable steps.

In regional competitions this week, our gymnastics team took 2nd place and Arianna Smith individually placed 3rd overall. In wrestling, Raphael Pena placed 3rd and Bryan Urrutia Romero placed 5th. Girls dive competed earlier today and placed 2nd as a team, with Taityn Speier placing 2nd individually. Boys dive just finished up and Nathaniel Grannis placed 1st. Swim will be competing this Saturday and our one act play, The Elephant Man, competes on Monday in their regional competition.

For those who celebrate, Happy Lunar New Year, and to everyone - have a great weekend!

8. Counselor Corner

Counselors completed Academic Advising with rising seniors over the last two weeks. We begin seeing rising juniors on Monday. This is a reminder that all students should have entered their course requests in SIS prior to our meetings. This allows us to focus more time on our conversations about goals and academic progress. Here are the instructions to guide you if you still need to enter them. The course selection forms and other helpful and important information can be found on our Academic Advising padlet.

We love seeing our students and are excited to continue our Advising meetings through Feb. 29. We are directing students to grade level padlets (Junior, Sophomore, Freshman) for college & career planning resources. A valuable resource for rising seniors is our Next Steps document which guides students to take the needed steps to reach their goals, no matter their post-secondary plans, whether it be college, technical school, military or workforce. College-bound students can download the Application Tracker to start organizing their colleges list and application components. Remember to enter admissions risk per college so you have a balanced list.

We are also excited to highlight Junior Focus Day on April 3rd. Rising seniors will choose 3 sessions to help them with post-secondary planning. Stay tuned for details, but mark your calendars! Speaking of seniors, we will send mid-year transcripts no later than 2/12/24. No need to send a request, we automatically send them! If you receive emails from your colleges, they understand that transcripts are on their way.

Lastly, thank you to our amazing community for celebrating us during National School Counselor Week! We care deeply about the work we do and seek to provide a positive impact on the emotional and academic wellness of each and every Woodson student. Helping to put the pieces together for students seeking their next steps to take in life is a genuine privilege and we take pride in being a safe place and guiding light in that endeavor. Here we are by the rock our students painted for us!

Update: Previous News, but still important, is now located on our Woodson website here. 1. Message from Mr. Greata

Good Afternoon Woodson,

The groundhog has spoken, or at least looked around, and Punxsutawny Phil did not see his shadow, which predicts an early spring. Regardless of the predictive powers of a groundhog, winter sports are far from over! With all of our district wins this past week, Woodson is just getting started and gearing up for regionals!

There is so much to celebrate this week. In addition to our district sports successes, we held our annual leadership lab conference, participated in cupcake wars, and started the second semester - just to name a few. Check out the amazing accomplishments of our athletes, actors, and future lawyers:

  • District Championship - One Act Play for The Elephant Man, Silas Blocker won best actor
  • 2nd in the Region - Woodson’s Crimson Mock Trial Team
  • Gymnastics District All-Around Champion - Arianna Smith, team took 3rd place
  • District Champions -  Girls Swim
  • District Dive Champions - Taityn Speier for Girls and Nathaniel Grannis for Boys
  • JV Northern Region Wrestling Champion - Tristan Spiegler
  • District Runner-up - Wrestler Rafael Pena

We are excited to announce that we are bringing back Cav Kudos!  Students can be nominated for Cav Kudos by their teacher to be recognized for acts of kindness and responsibility. Nominated students receive a CAV Kudo certificate at an end of the week celebration. You will also be able to see the names of the recipients on our student recognition page. Thank you to our wonderfully spirited Deb Glover who asked to restart the program!

Yesterday was the first day of Black History Month and we are taking the opportunity to engage in learning about Black history. Black history is American history and it is important that students receive meaningful, sustained opportunities to learn about the experiences and contributions of Black and African American people year-round. At Woodson, we are asking everyone to do some research, learn more about Black history, and share it with others. Throughout the month, we will be sharing resources with staff and students and creating spaces for discussion and learning.

Next week, P.S. I Love You Week, is dedicated to suicide awareness and prevention, and is marked by the spreading of positivity and kindness at Woodson. The full schedule of events, developed by our leadership students, can be found below in the Woodson Weekly email. On Friday, be a drop in a sea of purple by wearing something purple and supporting this important cause!

Have a wonderful weekend Woodson!

Update: Previous News, but still important, is now located on our Woodson website here. 1. Message from Mr. Greata

Good Afternoon Woodson,

It was sensational to see so many of you at Curriculum Night this past Tuesday. Thank you for sharing your evening with us!! Due to the coordination and planning from our Director of Student Services, Josh Peters, it was an informative and well executed evening, and I want to thank our administrative team, our student services department, our department chairs, and our teachers for generously giving their time and contributions.

Please continue talking with your students about their course selections and working towards a balanced schedule and plan for extracurricular participation. For rising upperclassmen, don’t forget to watch our Curriculum Night Overview for Upperclassmen as you plan for next year, and also bookmark our Academic Advising webpage.

Winter sports are entering district tournaments and we are taking the time to celebrate our senior athletes, who have carried the torch of athletic excellence and sportsmanship another year for the Woodson community. We appreciate their leadership and the indelible mark they have left on our school. Over the past two weeks we recognized 26 swim and dive seniors as well as seniors on the girls gymnastics and basketball teams, as they passed an important milestone on the ever shortening path to graduation - just 83 school days away!

Please be sure to come out for all of our upcoming district tournaments and senior nights. For dates, times and locations visit www.woodsonsports.com

Due to the snow last week, our two Saturday events in Springfield have been rescheduled for tomorrow, Saturday the 27th! Come on out to the Giant within Cardinal Forest (8320 Old Keene Mill Rd.) between 9 am and 1 pm for Woodson Leadership’s Stuff The Truck event and then sneak over to West Springfield High School where our Theater class will be performing The Elephant Man at their district competition at 9:45 am.  Of course, Dessert on Broadway, our High School Broadway musical review, is tonight and tomorrow, with showtimes on Friday at 7 pm and Saturday at 2 pm and 7 pm

We want to thank Dr. Nardos King, the Chief Equity Officer for FCPS, who visited our student leaders this week to discuss student advocacy and equity. Dr. King shared with me how impressed she was with our student leaders and that they had a powerful conversation. I told her that I was not surprised!

Before concluding, I would like to again address the acts of vandalism that occurred this week. We strongly denounce these acts, they do not represent Woodson, and we will not tolerate them.  We celebrate each and every student and their family, and we value our diversity. Without diminishing the heinousness of these individual acts, it is important to recognize that acts of kindness, understanding, empathy, and generosity are far more common at Woodson.

While we will continue to call out and address these acts of hate, we are also going to provide more follow up information in the weeks ahead and continue to reach out in partnership with our community.

Have a wonderful and safe weekend,

Kevin Greata
Principal

5. Counselor Corner

Woodson Counselors are in high gear as we prepare for Academic Advising! We recently visited Frost Middle School to meet with our rising 9th graders. We introduced them to potential course options, reviewed graduation requirements, and shared important information as they get ready to transition to high school next fall. Speaking of Advising, we begin on Monday, January 29th! We meet with rising Seniors through Feb. 8, followed by rising Juniors (Feb 12-21), then rising Sophomores (Feb. 22-29).

Have you discussed your child’s class intentions for next school year? This weekend is a great time to do that! Refer to the Woodson Academic Advising website and Student Services Academic Advising padlet for the course catalog, course selection sheets, and all important resources you need to make the most informed decisions. Counselors are excited to meet with each student at their individual meeting. We will be away from email more often during this time and appreciate your patience in awaiting replies during this busy time of year.

NEW News 1. Message from Mr. Greata

Good Afternoon Woodson,

Due to the inclement weather, this past week was short, but packed with action!  We had a full week of sports with boys basketball winning over Robinson and South County, while girls basketball and our rifle team both had wins against Robinson. The rifle team won by a mere 15 points (out of 436).  We also had a wonderful evening celebrating our swim and dive seniors at their annual pasta dinner. Congratulations to all of our athletes!

Weather permitting, we have several events this Saturday. We hope you can make a morning of it and attend two events in the Springfield area.  Our theater students will be performing The Elephant Man in the Patriot District One Act Play competition at 9:45 am at West Springfield High School.  The performance is free and open to the public.  While you are in the area, please stop by the Giant at Cardinal Forest (8320 Old Keene Mill Rd.) for Woodson Leadership’s STUFF THE TRUCK event, running from 9 am to 1 pm. All of the food donations go to the Annandale Food Site.

Times and locations of Saturday sporting events including rifle, wrestling, swim & dive, and basketball, can be found at www.woodsonsports.com. We will update this website if weather delays or cancelations occur.

Following this week’s disrupted schedule will be next week’s unusual schedule. I hope you find the following summary of events and school hours helpful:

  • Tuesday, the 23rd, we will be hosting our community for our annual Curriculum Night from 6 pm to 8 pm.
  • We are in need of 2,000 cookies for our leadership students, who will be handing out cookies at lunch on Tuesday, the 23rd. See below for more details and use this link to sign up.
  • Thursday, the 25th, is the last day of the 2nd quarter and is a two hour early release day.
  • On Friday, the 26th, there will be no school for students due to it being a teacher work day.
  • 7pm on Friday, the 26th, our talented students will be performing Dessert on Broadway, our high school broadway musical review. If you can’t make it on Friday for sweet tunes and sweet treats, they will be performing again at 2pm and 7pm on Saturday, the 27th.
  • January 27th is the deadline for senior baby ad photos in the yearbook!  Go to www.yearbookordercenter.com and type in Woodson’s code – 5278.
  • February 19th is the first day of spring sport tryouts. For more information on requirements, tryout times, and contacts, visit www.woodsonsports.com or stop by the Activities Office in C103.

I want to encourage families to discuss course selection with your students prior to attending Curriculum Night on Tuesday. The best schedules support a balance between academics and extracurriculars, and include a healthy mix of challenging classes, passion classes, and classes that meet graduation requirements. Two great questions for students to answer: Will you be challenged? and Will you have fun?

I hope you have a wonderful weekend! Stay warm, and enjoy the SNOW!

2. It's Cookie Time Woodson Leadership classes need your help!

On Tuesday, January 23rd, student leadership would like to have a cookie handout for all students during all lunches. In order to do so, they are in need of about 2,000 donated cookies. Cookies can be dropped off in the main office all day Monday and before 9:30am on Tuesday. All types of cookies are needed, including gluten free, peanut free, or any other common allergen free. Please have cookies separated if they differ in ingredients, so we can make sure there is no cross contamination! Cookies will be distributed between cafeterias A and B from 11:15am - 1:20pm on Tuesday, January 23rd. Thank you for your help!

Sign Up Here! 3. Academic Advising and Curriculum Night Rising 10th,11th, and 12th grade students and parents are encouraged to watch our Curriculum Night Presentation ahead of the event on January 23rd, 2024. The recording can be found here.

Academic Advising and the course selection process for 2024-2025 has begun! For more detailed information, please review the e-notify that was sent out on Wednesday, January 10th to parents and guardians of current 9th, 10th and 11th grade students.

Important upcoming dates for Academic Advising related events:

  • Tuesday, January 23rd: Curriculum Night: 6-8pm (for all students, and their parents/guardians, who plan to attend Woodson HS next year)
  • Monday, January 29th: Academic Advising for current Juniors begins
  • Monday, February 12th: Academic Advising for current Sophomores begins

Please bookmark these sites and refer back to them throughout the next couple of months as you have conversations at home with your students regarding course selections for next year.

This week was Virginia School Principal Week!
Thank you, Mr. Greata, for your leadership, dedication, and passion.

4. Meditation and Reflective Space Updates (Formerly the Prayer Room)

Starting in the 3rd quarter, we will be updating our procedures for the Meditation and Reflection Space (formerly the prayer room).  We are adding a parent permission component and setting a common time for the space to be used.  The space will be available between roughly 1:10 pm and 1:40 pm each day. The rationale is that this will minimize the amount of time students will be out of any single class. Only students with an approved pass will be able to use the space. To obtain an approved pass, students must fill out this form. Parents will then be contacted by an administrator. Once parent/guardian permission has been granted, students will receive a pass for the space.

5. SPIRIT Council Membership Drive

Our SPIRIT Council is looking to increase their numbers and impact at our school. The SPIRIT Council resulted from our participation in a program developed by the Department of Justice Community Relations Service, namely the Student Problem Identification & Resolution of Issues Together (School-SPIRIT) program. Our SPIRIT Council collaborates with other student and staff leaders in the school to have a positive impact on our school climate by identifying and addressing school conflicts. Our SPIRIT council will not only work in committees to fulfill that important mission, but it will also take the lead in collaborating with other clubs and leaders to support the recognition of heritage months.  We are very excited about their leadership and the leadership opportunities this will provide prospective members in helping our school lead with our diverse strengths. The SPIRIT Council will be sending out an interest form this week to students, and they will be holding their new member meeting after school on Tuesday, January 30, 2024.

6. Library Service Learning Project

Woodson Library proudly announces that our Library Service Learning project of making hats and scarves will now include ECHO. ECHO is a non-profit organization that helps provide clothing to the Burke and Springfield community.

The Woodson Library collected 48 knitted, crocheted, and round-loom knitting items, demonstrating the dedication and commitment of Woodson students. Their handmade creations will surely bring warmth and comfort to those who need it most. This project is a fantastic way for Woodson students to participate in service learning and contribute to their community.

Parents if your student needs Service Learning hours please contact Lisa Muir at [email protected].

8. What Families Can Do to Fight Drug Misuse

FCPS is committed to raising awareness about the opioid epidemic with our educators, parents/caregivers, and students. Together, we can help ensure our students thrive.

What can families do?

  • Show you disapprove of underage drinking and other drug misuse. More than 80% of young people ages 10-18 say their parents are the leading influence on their decision whether to drink.
  • Show you care about your child’s health, wellness, and success.
  • Show you are a good source of information about alcohol and other drugs. Find helpful resources on the FCPS Opioid Awareness webpage
  • Pay attention to your child and discourage risky behaviors.
  • Build your child’s skills and strategies for avoiding drinking and drug use. Talk with your child about what they would do if faced with a decision about alcohol and drugs, such as texting a code word to a family member or practicing how they will say, “No thanks.”

Visit the FCPS website for more information.

Parents can select a book of their choice with the only requirement being that the book is a Young Adult title.

Please RSVP to Lisa Muir at [email protected] if you are interested. Potential Meeting times: The Last Tuesday of the Month via Zoom at 7pm. The first meeting will be held via Zoom and we can move to meet in person if preferred.

What Woodson High School Values:

D - Diversity: We celebrate one another’s positive contributions to the common good and seek a full understanding of what it means to be human.
I - Inclusion: We prioritize providing everyone with an environment where they feel welcome, wanted and valued.
V - Voice: We foster an environment that inspires and empowers individual creativity and uniqueness while hearing and valuing each story.
E - Engagement: We encourage students to discover and establish their academic and extra-curricular passions in individual and communal contexts.
R - Resilience: We traverse difficult journeys utilizing resources to navigate personal, physical, and academic challenges.
S - Strength: We support one another and are stronger as a group than as individuals.
E - Ethical Behavior: We hold each other in positive regard, interacting with one another ethically and uplifting those around us.

12. Academy Open Houses

Is your child interested in architecture and construction, information technology, or health science? FCPS high school academies will hold open houses for interested students beginning in mid-January.

An Academy is a center within a high school that offers advanced technical and specialized courses that can prepare students for postsecondary education and/or career fields. Students enrolling in Academy elective courses will be provided with opportunities to participate in a variety of career experiences including shadowing, mentoring, or internships with local businesses. More than a dozen career fields can be explored through FCPS academies.

Learn more and find the calendar of Academy open houses.

The snow didn't stop our school from showing kindness for "Dude. Be Nice."
week this week. Mr. Greata, Woodson Principal, braved the cold after the dismissal bell on Thursday and passed out bracelets and lollipops to students.

13. TalkingPoints: 2-Way Messaging (Multi-Language Translation) App

Woodson Administration will be sending out new communication updates via TalkingPoints, a two-way messaging app that some have already been using, which allows parents and caregivers to communicate with teachers and schools.

The app translates messages, so teachers and staff can input messages in English and parents can respond in their preferred language. TalkingPoints supports 125 languages, making it easier and faster for our FCPS families to connect with their schools.

There are two ways families can use TalkingPoints.

  • School and teacher messages will come directly to the phone number that is registered in our system as a SMS text or through the TalkingPoints Parent App.
  • You can reply by text or through the app.

If you need to update your preferred correspondence language or phone number, contact Woodson's registrar Darlene Sheppard at [email protected].

For more information, visit the FCPS TalkingPoints webpage.

14. Laptop Tech Support Hours

If students need FCPS laptop technical support at Woodson HS, please submit a ticket using the FCPS Parent/Student Tech Support Portal.

Our walk-in hours in Room A112/A114 are:

Any other time you should try to make an appointment using a ticket from the Support Portal.
