Message from Mr. Greata

Thank you to everyone who joined us for Back to School Night this past Tuesday! It was a delight to connect with so many families and witness the wonderful interactions among students, staff, parents, and guardians. From classroom visits to spirit wear and our collaborative weaving project, it was truly a memorable evening.

For those who attended, I hope you had a chance to pick up our refrigerator sheet, designed to keep families connected. It includes QR codes to our most frequented sites, such as the all-new Cav Kiosk, and a calendar with our return period schedule. The Cav Kiosk is now accessible to both students and families and is your go-to source for up-to-date information, including details on what to wear during Spirit Weeks. You can also click here to download an electronic version, or visit our main office to pick up a hard copy on cardstock.

A special thank you to Leslie O’Shaughnessy for organizing and leading our collaborative weaving project, commemorating our school's name change to Carter G. Woodson High School. The weave is coming together beautifully, and students are still welcome to contribute by visiting classroom E160. Stay tuned for more information about our rededication ceremony on October 23, 2024, and be sure to watch our new “What's In A Name?” video on our school history webpage.

I’d also like to recognize two outstanding students, Valerie Gutierrez and Miranda Baxter, for presenting information about our clubs and organizations during Back to School Night. They shared that the most common question was, "How can I join a club if I missed the interest meeting?" Please visit our club webpage for a list of clubs and sponsors, or explore club options on Instagram.

As Hispanic Heritage Month begins this Sunday, Carter G. Woodson High School joins the entire FCPS community in celebrating the rich histories and cultures of our members who trace their heritage to Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. Don’t miss the beautiful display case put together by Woodson Spanish teacher Katrina Cohen and our student volunteers, which you can see in this week’s Woodson Weekly.

Finally, tonight our Woodson football team will travel to Oakton High School for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff. We’re anticipating a "Blizzard Out," so don’t forget to wear white and get lost in the excitement! Tomorrow, our girls volleyball team will compete in an invitational at Alexandria City High School. For match times, please visit our Athletics website.

Wishing you all a safe and enjoyable weekend!

Kevin Greata
Principal

View our Student and Group Recognition webpage!

Thank you to all of the families that made it to Back to School Night on Tuesday! If you weren't able to attend, but would like our refrigerator handout of helpful information, please stop by the Main Office.

Message from Mr. Greata

We kicked off the weekend in the best way possible with our first Cav Kudos, where we recognized 8 outstanding students who went above and beyond to build our community through kindness, citizenship, and service. A big thank you to Debbie Glover for organizing this incredibly important program. To see the students who were recognized, please visit our student recognition page!

We had a fantastic turnout at the first PTSO meeting this past Tuesday. I’d like to extend my gratitude to Sara Mastro, Nicole Spindler, Amy Zganjar, Megan Fay, Judith Cabelli, and Diane Raffaele for stepping up to lead this vital group. During the meeting, we reviewed the amazing support the PTSO provides to our school, which directly benefits both teachers and students. One of the highlights is the grant program, which offers thousands of dollars in additional assistance for needs identified by teachers and club sponsors. These grants are crucial, as they often address needs that the school budget simply cannot cover.

We are still actively seeking families and staff to join the PTSO. Membership serves as the fundamental fundraiser for the PTSO, and the more members we have, the more we can do to support the school. If you haven’t joined yet, I encourage you to strongly consider becoming a member. #OneWoodson

Looking ahead, we are excited to welcome you to our Back to School Night this coming Tuesday, September 10th. Events will begin at 5:00 PM, and classroom visits will start at 6:00 PM. This year, we’re offering a Family Help Center in the Library, where you can get connected, and there will be many opportunities for you to stay connected located in the auditorium. Families, check your email for all the details about Back to School Night.

All families will leave Back to School Night with a resource sheet for the refrigerator that has quick links to all the important resources. Most prominent is our now public facing Cav Kiosk!

Lastly, don’t forget that we are hosting Chantilly High School tonight, for what is going to be a great football game! It’s a Gold Out in recognition of Pediatric Cancer Awareness,  so wear your solid gold outfit. The game will be followed by our Cav Kickoff Dance for students.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Kevin Greata
Principal

Schedule Change Requests

The schedule change request window is now closed.

Over the past two weeks, students have had the opportunity to request a schedule change via our google form and we received about 500 requests. Counselors are continuing to process requests submitted by 3pm on September 6th in the order in which they were received.

For requests submitted on September 6th, those will be processed on Monday and Tuesday of next week. Students will receive an email from their counselor to their FCPSschools.net account to update them on the status of their change request and whether it could be accommodated or not.

Going forward, any schedule change requests will need to come from a staff member (either a teacher or counselor) and will be made in consultation with the student and their parent/guardian. For any questions about specific classes, please contact your child’s teacher directly. For any general questions related to scheduling or anything else, please feel free to contact your child's counselor.

Students receive the first Cav Kudos of the 2024-2025 school year.

Faculty and Staff nominate students that have been seen doing an act of kindness, which is reflective of our school’s mission of creating a healthy environment of mutual respect, responsibility, equity, and inclusion.

Digital Resources Consent Form

Please make sure you have signed the Digital Resources Consent Form this school year. Without consent, students will not have access to many instructional tools in the classroom. Families can log in to the PDC using their ParentVUE credentials to complete consent forms assigned to their child.

We are looking for guest speakers! Each speaker will share how they got started, successes, challenges, and what skills they use on the job today. Our goal is for students to learn more about the multitude of career options available to them and to make connections between the careers and our Portrait of a Graduate (POG) attributes that emphasize life skills such as communication, collaboration, resilience, citizenship, and critical and creative thinking.

Interested speakers should complete the form linked here by Friday, September 20 to confirm your participation.

Counselor Corner

Bookmark our Woodson Student Services padlet to access all of our padlets. To name a few: grade-level padlets with curriculum lessons and post-secondary planning resources, academic support, social/emotional support, and  academic advising with graduation requirements and course planning information. With the limits on phone use, students may want to bookmark our Woodson Wellness site to utilize brain breaks during appropriate class time.

Seniors received an email from their counselor this week regarding senior year planning. We hosted Senior Info Night last week and are excited to visit our seniors on September 16 to review all important aspects of navigating senior year. Seniors should bookmark the Senior Padlet and follow the Senior Checklist for requesting transcripts and recommendation letters. We require 15 school days to process transcripts and recommendation letters, which is three weeks and does not include weekends or holidays.  Seniors should reference our Senior Next Steps document to guide their senior year planning. If families missed Senior Night, review the slides for helpful resources & information. Notice upcoming dates for events which may be helpful to your student. We are here to support you each step of the way.

With classes in full swing, we want students to know they have Academic support at their fingertips. FCPS now partners with Varsity Tutors for free online tutors and essay support. This and other content help, study skills and test prep resources can be found on our Academic Supports padlet. Students should communicate with their teachers first if they find themselves struggling. Teachers can offer help during their Leaning Seminar period and by appointment if they stay after school. Families, check your student’s organization system and prepare for each week, checking academic progress in ParentVUE weekly.

We were excited to introduce ourselves to our 9th grade students last week during their 3rd period Learning Seminar class. We will see Freshmen again the last week of September for their 9th grade curriculum lesson. We will review graduation requirements, academic integrity and starting high school off well. We will also review wellness resources and how to become involved as a Cavalier. The presentation will be posted on the Freshman padlet for review afterward.

Tonight marks a special occasion with Feeder Night, Cav Carnival, and the Dance! These events hold a special place in my heart. As I approach my one-year anniversary as principal at Carter G. Woodson High School, this will be my third Feeder Night. It's a fantastic event that brings together students and staff from across our entire pyramid, and I love watching all of our youngest Cavaliers run across the football field. Watching from the vantage point in the end zone is truly thrilling!

I hope you can join us this evening for games for the younger students starting at 5:00 pm in Cavalier Hall. The running of the field is just prior to the game at 6:45pm and after the game, Woodson students can celebrate the start of the school year at our annual Back to School Dollar Dance - still only a dollar!

It was great to see all of our senior families last night for Senior Information Night, what a great turnout. Our guest speaker, Pat Money, from George Mason University, provided some excellent insight. Most memorable for me was that students should apply for scholarships even if they only meet 60-70% of the criteria, and that most admissions put a bigger emphasis on your transcript, than standardized test scores. Thank you Christine Lieb-Mosley, Adrienne Wood, and Victoria Powell for organizing this event!

Next week, full implementation of our cell phone policy, including consequences, will begin. Check out this flyer which will be emailed to all parents next week with more details. Again, students have already been doing a great job of adhering to the policy already - Thank you students and families!

Late buses will start next week on Wednesday, September 4th.  Late buses will be available every Wednesday.

There is no school on Friday, August 30th, and Monday, September 2nd, to celebrate Labor Day weekend. Enjoy the long, relaxing weekend and we will see you tonight at the CAV Carnival and the Feeder Night Game against Yorktown!

Principal

Labor Day

Friday, August 30, and Monday, September 2, are Labor Day holidays for all FCPS employees and students. Virginia legislation requires that schools opening prior to Labor Day must be closed the Friday immediately preceding Labor Day.

Cell Phones Off, Learning On

Thank you for helping to support the FCPS cell phone policy by waiting to call or text your child about non-urgent matters until the school day is over. In case of an emergency, it is always best to contact Woodson's Main Office at 703-503-4600 to reach your child during class time.

Visit the FCPS Cell Phone Policy webpage to read more about usage policies by grade level and to share your feedback on the current cell phone policy.

Woodson's Cell Phone Policy and Consequence Structure

Schedule Change Request Process

The schedule change request window for this year is now open through Friday, September 6th.

During this time, students may complete the online schedule request change google form to request a change to one of their classes. The form was posted to the All Students Schoology Course this past Monday morning, and is only accessible to students.

Counselors will process submitted forms in the order in which they are received. If space is available in the requested course then the change will be made; if not then the change will not be made. Students will receive an email from their counselor to their FCPSschools.net account to update them on the status of their change request.

Please allow up to 2 days for requests to be processed due to the high volume being submitted. While students simply need to complete the form to submit a request, students or parents may always contact their counselor if they have any questions or need any assistance.

Update Emergency Care Form Information

Information must be correct and is what we will use in case of an emergency. We are asking all parents/guardians to review and update via SIS ParentVUE. If you have more than one child enrolled in FCPS, updating it for one student will update it for all of your students. Having the most up-to-date information for all of our students is essential to our ability to best meet all students' needs in the event of an emergency.

Woodson Career Day - Speakers Needed

We are beginning to organize our career day at Woodson High School on October 31 from 8:30-12:05pm. We are looking for guest speakers!

Each speaker will share how they got started, successes, challenges, and what skills they use on the job today. While we will have three sessions we understand it is a large piece of the day and if you could make even one or two of the sessions it would be a meaningful experience for our students. Each session will run approximately 50 minutes to allow for your presentation and a brief question and answer session. If you are available October 31 and would like to know more about the day please let us know. Interested speakers should complete the form linked here by Friday, September 20 to confirm your participation.

Message from Mr. Greata

Good Afternoon Woodson,

Our school year started quietly, with a beautiful senior sunrise, before giving way to the energetic sounds of our Pep Band and cheers from our leadership students, all of which provided the perfect high school welcome back. Our staff could not have been more excited to greet them and start the year! Thank you to Dan Schaefer, Katie Cole-Kelly, Stephanie Graham, Aaron Morgan, Helen Landers, Michelle Tibbs, and Kelly O’Connell for your support in organizing!

In this first year as Carter G. Woodson High School, we are going to keep the celebration going, and I know that our students will be providing us with great reasons to celebrate! With our date set for our rededication ceremony on October 23, 2024, we are hoping everyone will get involved as we learn, reflect, and connect. Students can participate in our Art Competition by clicking this link, and learn more about Carter G. Woodson by going to our Carter G. Woodson site. Follow our student ambassadors on instagram at cgw.studentambs. If students don’t want to do an individual project, they can help with the collaborative weaving, facilitated by Leslie O’Shaughnessy, Woodson Art teacher.  They should come by her room, E160 to join in!

A hot topic this week has been the new cell phone policy. We’re committed to ensuring that the focus in the classroom remains on learning and I am happy to report that teachers have reported that students have done a great job of keeping their phones away - it is greatly appreciated! On September 3rd, we will begin to enforce the consequences, which include phone confiscation for the period, or the day, and could lead to the requirement that parents pick up the phone. We recognize that while this is the right thing to do, it is also a shift in our culture. Please partner with us by discussing the cell phone policy with your students and reminding them that we’re in this together, and that this policy is in place so they can get the most out of their school experience.

Looking forward, the official sports season starts next week. We have the CAV Carnival, the running of the field, our first home football game, and then the kickoff dance next Thursday, August 29th!  The Weekly Wrap Up is back and it is the easiest way to stay up to speed on everything that is Carter G. Woodson High School.  Subscribe to it on Spotify or Apple Podcasts!

Looking forward to an amazing year ahead!

Message from Mr. Greata

Woodson Families,

We are just days away from the first day of school, and we couldn't be more excited to welcome our incredible Cavaliers back! It was so good to have many students and families join us for our orientations and our Cav Kickoff. This year is going to be filled with countless positive experiences, and we’re eager to witness the remarkable growth and achievements that will unfold. We’re going to get started early on Monday.

SENIORS - Join us at 6:00 AM on the first day of school for SENIOR SUNRISE! We will be gathering on the field between the tennis courts and the stadium. With graduation set for June 10th, we have only 298 days until you cross that stage.  Let’s get this year off to a bright start!

I want to keep this Weekly focused on providing you with the most essential information you need for the first day of school. Please review the list below to ensure everything is ready to go for day 1.

    • Arrival - Students should arrive each day to school no earlier that 7:30 am
    • Back to School Cavalier Kit - Includes important Kiss n’ Ride and student parking pass information.  We have also updated our lunch guidelines and schedule so students know which lunch they will have each day.
    • Student Information - Look at ParentVue (Need access?) and StudentVUE where you will find your student’s class schedule, bus information, and locker information. NEW THIS YEAR, you will also be able to fill out any required forms and report absences!
    • Laptop Distribution - We want to thank all the students that have already picked up their laptop. Students that have not picked up their laptop will receive it either through PE classes, or social studies classes on the first two days of school.
    • Medication Drop Off - If you have medications to drop off for the school year, please bring them to the main office.

Enjoy the last weekend of summer and we can't wait to greet you on Monday!

Have a great weekend!

Student Chromebook

If your student was not able to pick up their chromebook during our distribution days, they will receive it in either their PE class or Social Studies class the first two days of school.

If your student retained their school issued laptop this summer, they will continue to use that laptop for the 2024-2025 school year. They will not receive a new one.

If you have questions, please contact our Woodson Tech Team at [email protected]

Congratulations to Senior Diver, Nathaniel Grannis (pictured 2nd from the left) and his partner Misha Andriyuk on winning the USA Junior Nationals Gold Medal in Synchronized Platform Diving.

Digital Consent Form

In order for students to be able to access all digital resources on their school issued laptops starting Monday, parents must complete the Digital Resources Consent Form. Information on how to access the form can be found below.

Starting August 1, 2024, student consent forms currently on ParentVUE will be moved to the Parent Digital Consent System (PDC).

Families can log in to the PDC using their ParentVUE credentials to complete consent forms assigned to their child. School staff will have access to view consent status and edit consent with permission from the family.

Forms available in the PDC starting in the 2024-2025 school year include:

  • School Counseling Opt-Out
  • Digital Resources Consent
  • SEL Screener Opt-Out
  • Consent for Release of Student Records in Support of Postsecondary Applications
  • Denial of Access to Military Recruiters

Parking passes for the 2024-25 school year will be available for purchase starting the first week of school. We will send out an e-notify message next week with final details. For planning purposes, the cost for a full-year parking pass is $200.00.

During the first week of school, students can park in student designated parking spots on a first come first serve basis. Even though parking citations will not begin until Tuesday, September 3rd, if a student parks in staff designated areas they will be ticketed.

Labor Day

Opt-Out Annual Notice

Annual Notice of Survey, Records, Curriculum, Privacy, and Related Rights

Fairfax County Public Schools wants all parents and caregivers to understand its policies regarding surveys, records, curriculum, privacy, and related rights.

In its Annual Notice of Survey, Records, Curriculum, Privacy, and Related Rights and Opt-Out Forms (Annual Notice), FCPS provides explanations of the rights listed above as well as forms that may be used to exercise opt-out choices. Two versions of the Annual Notice are available: a grades K-8 version and a grades 9-12 version. Parents/caregivers with children at different grade levels should read each applicable version of the Annual Notice, because the notices and opt-out rights vary depending on the student’s grade level.

Get more information and view the 2024-25 Opt-Out Booklets.

Review our Back to School Cavalier Kit

Even though summer was jam packed with planning for the 2024-25 school year, our Woodson Administrators kept things exciting. Mrs. Stransky (SOSA), Mrs. Baker (SBTS), Mrs. Collins (AP), and Mr. Greata (Principal) showed off their musical talents, or acting skills, for all of Region 5 to see.

Can you guess which administrators actually play and perform?

Message from Mr. Greata

What a great week it has been at Carter G. Woodson High, as we have welcomed back many staff members, including our counselors and some teaching staff. In addition, our student leadership classes joined us to get a jump start on this year’s planning and building their own team. Indeed, throughout the summer, many groups of teachers and students have been working on different projects that will benefit all of us at CG Woodson.

I want to highlight our student ambassadors, who are dedicated to supporting the learning and celebration that our school will be engaging in leading up to our rededication ceremony on October 23rd. Among other accomplishments, this group of students has created a lesson about Carter G. Woodson that will be shown to the student body on the first day of school.

While most teachers will be officially returning on August 12th, many of our dedicated coaches and teachers have already been working tirelessly with students throughout the summer. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to them for their unwavering commitment and hard work.

We are eagerly looking forward to meeting our freshman and new student families on August 15th, starting at 4:00 pm, and welcoming all families at our Open House on August 16th, from 9 am to 11 am. This will be a fantastic opportunity for you to meet our staff, explore the campus, and get ready for a successful school year.

Please note that early next week, we will be launching our Back to School website. This new resource will have all the information you need in one convenient location.

Thank you for your continued support—we are looking forward to an amazing school year!

Warm regards,

Kevin Greata
Principal

Woodson Weekly -  July 26

Woodson Weekly is published every Friday to provide the community with important information about school life at Woodson High School.

Mission Statement

Woodson High School’s mission is to empower our community to reach their individual potential by creating a healthy environment of mutual respect, responsibility, equity, and inclusion.

Join us for Cav Kickoff on Friday, August 16th 9am-11am

1. Message from Mr. Greata

Good afternoon Wonderful Woodson Families,

I hope you are all enjoying a wonderful and restful summer! We are looking forward to welcoming back our teachers and our students and we are anticipating a stellar school year.

As we draw nearer to the start of school, please be on the lookout for important communications. In addition to resuming the Woodson Weekly’s Friday publication, we will also be sending out some targeted eNotifies.  I am proud of the plans and goals we have for the 2024-2025 school year and I look forward to sharing our direction for the school year. Please continue to check out the weekly!

We have had a new addition to our leadership team. I am delighted to announce the appointment of our new assistant principal, Michelle Case. Mrs. Case brings with her 20 years of dedicated service in Fairfax County Public Schools, both as a teacher and administrator.

Mrs. Case began her career as a social studies teacher at Mount Vernon High School before transitioning to administrative roles at West Potomac High School and Kilmer Middle School. Most recently, she served as the director of student services and interim principal at Franklin Middle School.

Outside of school, Mrs. Case is a proud mom of a 7th grader at Rocky Run Middle School and a 4th grader at Greenbriar West Elementary School. She also has two step-sons, including a 4th grader and 2nd grader. She spends most weekends on the soccer field supporting her boys and coaching her daughter’s field hockey team. Michelle loves traveling with her husband, spoiling their two Labrador Retrievers, cheering on Penn State football, and enjoying Caps hockey.

We are excited to welcome Michelle to our school community and look forward to the positive impact she will have on our students, staff, and families.

Stay cool and have a great weekend!

Warm regards,

Kevin Greata
Principal

10. Immunization Requirements for Rising Seniors

Immunizations are required for all students entering 7th and 12th grades this fall. Visit FCPS’ immunization webpage to learn about the required vaccines.

Caregivers should ask their private healthcare provider or the health department to review their student's immunization record to ensure that their student has received these required immunizations.

Twelfth grade students must submit documentation of the Meningococcal vaccine.

Get more information on all student immunization requirements.

Please contact Woodson Registrar, Darlene Sheppard at [email protected] if you have any questions.

11. 2024-2025 Intent Form

If you will not be attending Woodson HS this fall, please let Woodson Student Services know now by clicking here to complete the student intent form. If your student will be returning to Woodson next year, there is no need to complete or return the form.

If your student will not be returning to Woodson next year, please complete the fields at the top of the form (you may leave the Teacher Name field blank). Then check the box that says “No” when asked if the student will be returning to this school next year. Then check the appropriate box from the options listed regarding where your student will be attending school next year. Lastly, please sign and date the form. You may either scan and email the form to return it, or have your student bring it to school and drop it off in Student Services.

Student Services will make sure all transcripts and records are forwarded to your child’s new school so his/her file is complete.  If you have any questions, please contact Woodson registrar Darlene Sheppard at 703-503-4622 or [email protected].

12. Fall Athletic Tryouts

Woodson Fall Sports Tryout Schedules

In order for a student to try out for any athletic team, they must have the following items completed prior to the first day of tryouts:

1) Activity Registration (online submission)

2) VHSL Sports Physical turned in to the Athletic Trainer or Activities Office C103

Students interested in Fall (or Winter/Spring) sports  can visit the Woodson Athletics website to find out more information or contact the Activities Office at 703-503-4681.

13. Dietary Accommodations Form

Starting School Year 2024-2025, the Office of Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) is implementing a standardized process for dietary accommodations to ensure the provision of safe and healthy food for our students. This form only needs to be filled out once while your student is enrolled at FCPS.

Please keep in mind the following information while reviewing the steps below:

  • FCPS does not provide meals containing pork.
  • We offer vegetarian and vegan options for lunch at every school, every day. If your student needs pork-free or vegetarian meals (which do not contain meat, poultry, or fish but may contain dairy and/or eggs), you do not need to fill out a Dietary Accommodation form, as we have those options available at all schools.
  • The form must be completed and submitted via email to [email protected] and the Registered Dietitians will reach out to the parent.

Please note that while FCPS is not a peanut-free kitchen, our peanut butter products are individually wrapped to prevent cross-contamination.

14. Student Parking Passes

Parking passes for the 2024-25 school year will be available for purchase online only. Information on how to purchase parking passes will be released in mid-August.

For planning purposes, the cost for a full-year parking pass is $200.00.

15. Student Consent Forms

  • Family Life Education Opt-Out
  • SOL Retest Permission
  • Hazel Health
  • BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) Opt-Out
  • SOS Screener Opt-Out
  • Objection to Release of Information to Outside Organizations
  • Objection to Release of Directory Information to the Public

As FCPS updates the PDC, more district-wide forms will be added.

16. Varsity Tutors

After careful consideration, FCPS has discontinued our contract with Tutor.com effective June 30, in conjunction with the end of ESSER funding for school districts nationwide. While feedback about Tutor.com has been positive overall, usage among students across FCPS has not been high enough to justify the cost to FCPS. Beginning in the 2024-25 school year, Varsity Tutors will be providing online tutoring services to FCPS students at no cost to families and no cost to the school division. More information about Varsity Tutors will be forthcoming. In the interim, these talking points may be helpful. As an alternative to Varsity Tutors, students may choose to access Schoolhouse, a free online, peer-to-peer tutoring service, founded by Sal Khan of Khan Academy. In addition to online tutoring options, FCPS has implemented a high impact tutoring program offered to identified students in grades 3-8 funded by the All in Virginia tutoring initiative, at no cost to the division.

You can learn more on FCPS’ Varsity Tutors webpage or Varsity Tutor’s website
