Attention Freshmen, Sophomore, and Junior Parents!!

Woodson's All Night Grad Party (Cav Cruise) is a fun-filled celebration for Woodson’s graduates next Tuesday, June 6 into the morning of Wednesday, June 7, at The St. James in Springfield. Volunteering at this event is a great opportunity to pay it forward before your student is a senior!

Your help can make a HUGE DIFFERENCE and prevent the event from having to close down early. You can literally save the ship!

Being PTSO President is more rewarding than my day job working for the Air Force. I get to meet so many nice parents and teachers. Even better are days I go into the school and see the building alive with our kids that are growing into young adults. It gives me hope for the future. Announcing the Cav Cupboard to serve Woodson families in need

Over the past few years, we have seen an increase in financial hardship and food insecurity in the Woodson community. In response, Woodson High School is opening Cav Cupboard, a pantry that will provide food and other household needs to our families in need. The pantry will be used by appointment only and managed by the school counselors in a discreet and respectful way. Thanks to a partnership with Britepaths, generous financial support from Karen Rasmussen, and support of the Woodson Administration, we have secured a location, shelving and a wagon and are now ready to stock the pantry in time to make the first distributions before the end of the school year when families struggle without the help of free school breakfast and lunch. Please read below to learn how you can help stock Cav Cupboard.

Exam 1st Period, Graduation Rehearsal (Main Gym), Cap & Gown Pickup (Aux Gyn) All obligations must be settled before a cap & gown will be issued including payment of debts, fines, fees, and completion of the county mandated FCPS Senior Survey)
Laptop Return Students must remove any stickers on their laptops before returning it. Students should make sure they return both their laptop and charger on that day. Students missing a charger must pay to replace it on MySchoolBucks. Replacement Laptop Cost: $481, Replacement Charger Cost: $23 Students not attending graduation may return their laptop and charger starting on Tuesday, May 23rd to the Tech Office (A112).

Underclass final exams will take place the week of June 12th. Each exam day is a half day of school with dismissal at 11:30am.

Rising Senior Portrait Dates

It's time for the Class of 2024 to start scheduling formal senior portraits. Victor O’Neill Studios is Woodson’s official school photographer. Beat the fall rush and get your portraits done early at the school.

Session A is scheduled for Wednesday-Friday, July 5-7, 2023

The attire for the school’s yearbook pose will be in the traditional Tuxedos and Drapes. Victor O'Neill will provide the Tuxedo and Drapes. In addition to the yearbook session they also offer sessions that include casual/personality portraits and cap and gown portraits. CAVS SPORTS

Boys Varsity Lacrosse

The team faced Hayfield Secondary School in the 2nd round of Occoquan Regional Play-Offs. The Hawks were prepared to battle our Cavs from start to finish and the game was very much back & forth with goals, amazing saves and turnovers. The Cavs defense took on a very physical Hawks offense and held their ground. Bradley Brewington had his work cut out for him going up against the 4th top ranked FOGO player in the region. Goalie Aidan Dash had some amazing saves that rightfully earned him the game ball. Five Cavs got on the scoreboard! Junior Will Eby had 1 goal and 1 assist, Senior Walker Smith had 2 goals, Freshman Roman Braswell had 2 goals, Junior Carlos Ramierez had 1 goal and Junior Cameron Marks had 3 goals and 1 assist and then scored a 4th goal to force the game into Sudden VIctory Over-Time! Cameron’s 5th goal secured a Cavaliers OT victory! This was Cameron’s 3rd OT game winning goal for the season. The final score was 11-10.

The Cavs then took on the Robinson Rams in the third round of Regionals. Every player gave their best effort, with goals scored by Will Eby (1), Chris Kang (1) and Cameron Marks (1). The final score was 8-3. The Rams went on to become Occoquan Regional Champions.

Best of luck to the seniors in the future! Farewell to Evan Bernard, Ross Davidson, Matt Hyder, Chris Kang, Leo Lee, Nate Lester, Walker Smith and Hien Vo.

A big CONGRATULATIONS to the WTW players that were selected to Patriot All District & Occoquan All Region.

1st Team All-District: Junior Cameron Marks - Midfielder and Sophomore Soren Ebbesen - Defense.

Honorable Mention: Junior Will Eby - Attack, Freshmen Roman Braswell - Attack, Senior Walker Smith - Midfield, Junior Luke Tryon - Defense, Senior Matt Hyder - Defense, Nate Lester - Short Stick Defensive Midfielder, and Junior Andrew Brewington - Face Off.

1st Team All-Region: Junior Cameron Marks - Midfielder.

2nd Team All-Region: Sophomore Soren Ebbesen - Defense.

Tennis

Both the girls and boys tennis teams have had success in the postseason!

Congratulations to Cavs Joselyn Limbago and Ryan Battaglia for winning the District and Regional Singles Titles in girls and boys tennis. They will move on to States in Newport News on June 9.

Joselyn and Mia Kim were runners up in the region in girls doubles, as were Ryan and Nam Duong on the boys side.

Both the girls and boys teams will play Langley HS in the State Semifinals this Friday.

Way to go Woodson Tennis!!

Crew

The crew team finished off this season with a trip to the SRAA Nationals in Oak Ridge, TN on May 26-27. The Women’s 1st Varsity and Women’s 2nd Varsity qualified for this prestigious regatta by placing in the top crews in Virginia. If you see a member of the team, congratulate them for performing well enough to now be NATIONALLY RANKED! The future is bright for the Woodson Crew Team! Girls Lacrosse

Woodson girl’s lacrosse team wins the 6C Occoquan Region Title!

The Lady Cavs’ ride to the Occoquan championship started against the Lake Braddock Bruins. The Cavs soundly handled the Bruins winning the game 16 - 4. In the 2nd round of regions, the Woodson girls faced the Justice High School Wolves. The Woodson girls jumped out ahead early and held the lead throughout the game, defeating Justice 18 - 7. In the region championship game, the Cavs faced their cross-town rivals Robinson Rams. The score was in Woodson’s favor at the half, 5-4. The Cavs dominated time of possession in the second half by controlling the draw, forcing turnovers, and generating solid clears. The Cavs defense shut down Robinson’s offense and took home the Occoquan crown, winning 9 - 4.

Join the team Friday at Pat Cunningham stadium as they start their run in the State tournament against the Oakton Cougars.

Varsity Softball

In the second round of Regionals, the Cavs pulled out a hard-fought win at home against Alexandria City, 13-12. Woodson was led by Senior Co-Captains Elizabeth Schneider and Sarah Banker. Schneider went 2-4 at the plate, including a double and batted in 4-runs. Banker went 3-4 with a home run to right field and drove in 2-runs. Sedona Adams had 3-hits, including a double and had 3 RBI. Emma Fleming had three singles and drove in 2 runs. Ceci Temple also chipped in offensively by driving in 2 runs on 2 hits.

The win advanced Woodson to the Regional Quarterfinals where they faced undefeated Hayfield.

Down by a run entering their last at bat, the Cavs batted around with 13-batters coming to the plate. The key offensive blow came when Claire Warden hit a grand slam home run to center field to push the lead to 7 runs.

The 18-11 win was led by Ally Geronime, with a triple, a single, and 2 hit by pitches. Her stat line also included: an RBI and 2 runs scored. Syd Huffman and Banker had 3 hits apiece. Penny Elliott, Adams, and Fleming had 2 hits each.

The Cavs play against Robinson away tonight in a Regional Semifinal game at 6:30pm.

College Commitment Ceremony Woodson Sports Physical Night - Wednesday, June 14th

Each year, it is required that all student athletes have a completed VHSL physical on file before participating in sports.The goal of Sports Physical Night is to provide a complete pre-participation examination screening that will leave student athletes with a valid VHSL physical for the entirety of the 2023-24 school year. The cost for the physical is $50.

The Athletic Training Program receives no funding from FCPS, and this event is their ONLY fundraiser for the year. ALL proceeds go towards helping the program purchase supplies. Without your support we would not be able to provide the services we do for our student athletes.

Sign up for an appointment for a physical here. If you cannot make the event on June 14, but still want to support the FCPS Athletic Training Program, feel free to sign up for another school's event! Every school will host (or co-host) their own night.

In need of physicians and HCP's to complete the actual physical exams (MD, DO, NP, PA) as well other HCP’s comfortable with taking vital signs. If you are willing and able to donate your time, it is greatly appreciated. You can sign up here. Please spread the word and sign up sheet!

Woodson dad, Rick Neifield, is offering free SAT math prep sessions to Woodson students via Zoom.

Woodson Math Center

Student math tutors are available during 5th period return, 5th period lunches and after school Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 3:00-3:45pm.

All sessions take place in B208. Look for the Math Center Flag. Tutors are excited to help students!

Free, On-Demand, Online Tutoring

Unless they’ve been opted out, students can access Tutor.com through Schoology. Every session is personalized to meet students’ needs from remedial to advanced levels. Sessions focus on conceptual learning and critical thinking—not quick answers.

Medication Pickup

The school health room is reminding parents and guardians that all medication stored in the health room must be picked up no later than dismissal time on Friday, June 15th. Medication left in the health room after that time will be discarded.

It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian, however, with parent or guardian written permission, a high school student may transport over-the-counter medications to and from the health room.

Underclass Students - Will You Be Returning to Woodson Next Year?

If you will not be attending Woodson HS this fall, please let Woodson Student Services know now. Please click here and fill out this form. This form was also mailed home with course requests for next year.

FCPS is looking for student-designed graphics or artwork to represent the observances that are recognized on the FCPS School Year Calendar for 2023-24 (PDF).

Middle and high school students are encouraged to tap into their creativity to design visuals that accurately and positively represent the many religious observances recognized in the FCPS community. Attendance is critical to student success in the classroom.

If your student will be absent from school, a parent/guardian must notify the attendance office. Below is a quick guide for reporting all-day absences, late arrivals, and early check-outs from school.

Opt-In to No-Cost Mental Health Teletherapy for Students - NOW AVAILABLE

FCPS has partnered with Hazel Health to begin offering virtual mental health services to high school students via live video sessions. Parents/caregivers who have been struggling to find a therapist for their child or who notice changes in their child’s behavior will be able to connect them virtually with a licensed therapist.

The first step for parents is to provide information through an opt-in form.

FCPS continues to require families to review the Daily Health Screening before sending students to school. The 5 Day Isolation Period will also continue for COVID positive students and staff.

Good afternoon Woodson,

As we embark on Memorial Day weekend, I want to thank all our families who serve or who have served in the United States Military branches. Let us remember our families, friends and colleagues who have lost a loved one while serving in the United States Military. We thank them for the freedoms we now enjoy each day in America.

I want to give a huge shout out to Ms. Kinne and her team for organizing our Spring Service Day! Students were in volved in all sorts of activities, I hope you enjoy the photos throughout this newsletter.

I hope everyone has a rejuvenating weekend. We will return next week with our seniors’ last day on Wednesday, May 31st (see story #4 for the last week schedule). As a reminder to our seniors; graduation rehearsal is on the 31st at 9:30 in the main gym.

NEW News 1. Memorial Day Holiday

Memorial Day is a holiday observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military.

All schools and offices will be closed on Monday, May 29th, for the Memorial Day holiday.

2. Last Late Bus Day - May 31st

Wednesday, May 31st will be the last late bus day for the 2022-2023 school year.

3. Yearbook Pickup

If you preordered a yearbook and have not yet picked it up, you may do so in Room A118 during 4th or 6th period on Tuesday, May 30th.

Yearbooks have sold out, pick up is for preorders only. There are no more books available to purchase this year. Thank you for supporting Woodson Yearbook!

Yearbook Correction

It has come to the attention of the editorial staff that there was a quote misattribution in the yearbook. Brooke Butts was quoted as saying “If Brooke could go back in time, she would tell her freshman self not to smoke in the bathroom stalls!” However, her actual quote is: “If Brooke could go back in time, she would tell her freshman self to find a good group of friends who will always be there to support and uplift you.”

The yearbook apologizes for this error and is reviewing procedures to prevent misattribution in the future.

5. Senior Laptop Return

Senior Laptop Return is scheduled for Wednesday, May 31st in the Aux Gym after Graduation Rehearsal.

Students must remove any stickers on their laptops before returning it. Students should make sure they return both their laptop and charger on that day. Students missing a charger must pay to replace it on MySchoolBucks.

Replacement Laptop Cost: $481
Replacement Charger Cost: $23

Students not attending graduation may return their laptop and charger starting on Tuesday, May 23rd to the Tech Office (A112).

Underclass final exams take place the week of June 12th and each exam day is a half day of school with dismissal at 11:30am.

9. Rising Freshman Academy!

Do you have a rising 9th grader for the 2023-2024 school year?

Register for this amazing opportunity to prepare rising 9th graders for the transition to high school with tours, tips, and hints with Woodson staff and Leadership students.

10. College & Career Center News

Attention Class of 2023: Our Senior Awards Ceremony will take place on Friday, June 2, 2023, 9:45 – 11:15 am in the Woodson Auditorium. We look forward to celebrating the Class of 2023 by recognizing their academic achievements, U.S. Service Academy appointments and ROTC scholarships, military enlistments, as well as our Woodson faculty and leadership awards. Seniors who report receipt of a scholarship will have their name and scholarship (but not the amount) listed on a rolling slide and in our printed program. To report a scholarship, seniors should complete this survey. The survey closes at the end of the day on Friday, May 26, and can only be accessed by students, who must use their fcpsschools.net account to access it. We ask that Seniors only report scholarships that they are actually using, not every scholarship they may have earned in total.

Personal invitations have been sent out to students who are receiving an award at the senior awards ceremony. Please check your email! If you are enlisting in the military, received an ROTC scholarship or a U.S. Service Academy appointment and did not received an invite, please email [email protected] All seniors are invited to join us to celebrate their classmates. Dress code for the ceremony is business casual.

Please review Woodson's attendance procedures to ensure accurate reporting for your student.

12. No Morning Attendance Calls

In order to accommodate the expanded student testing windows for SOLs and AP tests, morning attendance calls, texts, and e-mails will be suspended during the AP and SOL testing windows for middle and high schools only. Evening attendance notification will continue as normally scheduled.

Morning attendance notifications will be suspended from May 1st through June 2nd.

Additionally, all attendance notifications will be suspended for elementary, middle, and high on the last day of school.

Student Equity Ambassador Leaders (SEAL) is a leadership program that amplifies student voice and provides an increased understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion through leadership development, projects, and relevant experiences of high school students.

17. Calling All FCPS Student Artists and Designers!

FCPS is looking for student-designed graphics or artwork to represent the observances that are recognized on the FCPS School Year Calendar for 2023-24 (PDF).

18. No-Cost Mental Health Teletherapy for Students

FCPS has partnered with Hazel Health to begin offering virtual mental health services to high school students via live video sessions. Starting Monday, April 10, parents/caregivers who have been struggling to find a therapist for their child or who notice changes in their child’s behavior will be able to connect them virtually with a licensed therapist.

The first step for parents is to provide information through an opt-in form.

19. Woodson Sports Physical Night - Wednesday, June 14th

Every year, the Woodson Athletic Training Program hosts a Sports Physical Night. The goal of Sports Physical Night is to provide a complete pre-participation examination screening that will leave student athletes with a valid VHSL physical for the entirety of the following school year. Each year, it is required that all student athletes have a completed VHSL physical on file before participating in sports. The price will be $50 as it has been in previous years. Hosting this event is our Athletic Training Program’s ONLY fundraiser for the year as we DO NOT receive any funding from the county. ALL proceeds go towards helping the program purchase supplies. Without your support we would not be able to provide the services we do for our student-athletes. Woodson Student Government and the PTSO are holding a Student Appreciation Day on Friday, May 26.

We’re looking for parents to provide (bake or buy) cookies, 2 per Ziploc bag. The minimum signup contribution is 2 dozen cookies, but we’re in need of 2,000 total cookies so feel free to sign up for several dozen! Click here to sign up for regular and/or gluten free cookie contributions!

The bags of cookies can be delivered to Woodson’s front office all day on Thursday, May 25. Student government will give out the cookies during lunch on the 26th.

To report a scholarship, seniors should complete this survey. The survey closes on May 24, and can only be access by students, who must use their fcpsschools.net account to access it.

We ask that Seniors only report scholarships that they are actually using…not every scholarship they may have earned in total. Personal invitations will go out no later than May 24th to students who are receiving an award at the ceremony. All seniors, regardless of whether they are receiving an award or not, are invited to join us to celebrate their classmates. Dress code for the ceremony is business casual.

WOODSON CLUBS & ACTIVITIES Woodson Chorus

The final chorus concert of the year will be at 7pm on Tuesday, May 23. Remember Woodson Chorus alumni are invited to return to the stage and join in for the Irish Blessing at the end of the show. Once in Woodson Choir, always in Woodson Choir! The choral awards banquet from 6-9pm on Tuesday, May 30.

Boys Varsity Lacrosse

The Woodson Cavaliers traveled to Lake Braddock on Monday, May 5th to tackle the Bruins of Lake Braddock for the 2nd round of District Play-Offs. Our Cavs fought hard & fought strong, but was not quite enough to defeat the eventual Patriot District Champions of Lake Braddock. A huge shout out to the WHOLE team for their efforts against LBSC! But, recognition is owed to Junior Will Eby for 1 goal & 1 assist, Senior Walker Smith for 1 goal & 1 assist, Junior Cameron Marks for 3 goals, Senior Leo Lee for 1 goal and Senior Chris Kang for 2 assists!

The Woodson Cavaliers hosted the 1st round of Regionals @ WTW on Tuesday, May 16th vs. Fairfax High School. Another rainy game did not dampen our boys’ efforts, fight & skills! The boys pulled off a victory, winning 14-3! Shout out to the entire defense for their never ending efforts and to our Goalie, Adian Dash for stopping many, many shots on the WTW goal! Additional shout outs to players - Junior Will Eby with 3 goals and 1 assist, Senior Walker Smith with 3 goals, Senior Chris Kang with 1 goal, Sophomore Soren Ebbeson with 1 assist, Junior Carlos Ramirez with 1 goal & 1 assist, Junior Cameron Marks with 5 goals & 1 assist, Senior Nate Lester with 1 assist, and last, but certainly, not least - Freshman, Roman Braswell for a goal off of a strategic assist from Cameron Marks!

Well played boys! The team won their 2nd round of Occoquan Regionals agains Hayfield last night! They'll play next at Robinson in the semifinals! Good luck, Cavs!!

Varsity Baseball

The Woodson Varsity baseball team started its playoff baseball season with a Patriot District quarterfinal game at West Springfield. Senior Scott Durbin started for the Cavaliers and benefitted from a nice double-play in the bottom of the 1st when Senior Co-Captain Brandon Shelhorse caught a line drive and threw to Shortstop Adestan Gordon to second to double the runner off the bag. Durbin then retired the next 12 hitters in a row.

Woodson got things going offensively in the 7th. Senior Co-Captain Ben Smallwood ended a streak of 17 straight Cavalier outs by crushing a booming double to left. Junior Nate Moore singled him to third, and a walk loaded the bases. Senior Owen Fisher hit a clutch sacrifice fly to right to give Woodson a 1-0 edge. The Spartans got the win, but the Cavs played stellar defense and Durbin was fantastic again on the hill; yielding just four hits,striking out three, and walking just two batters.

Woodson had little time to rest as it began the Occoquan Region playoffs with a trip to visit the Thomas Jefferson (TJ) Colonials. Junior Ethan Conklin got things going by reaching base on an error, stole second and scored on a single by Gordon. Smallwood started for Woodson and made quick work of the Colonials, giving up just one hit over four innings.

The Cavaliers rallied to 5-0 in the 5th. TJ finally got on the board in the 5th with a double and single to plate a run before Smallwood induced a grounder to end the threat. The Cavaliers took advantage of a double play to record the first two outs in the 7th before Smallwood fanned the next hitter to end the game. Smallwood struck out 12 on the night, his most ever as a high school pitcher. Gordon led the hitting attack with three hits while Santamauro added two of his own.

Congratulations to these Cavaliers named to the Patriot District All-District Team: First Team first base - Shelhorse, First Team Outfield - Santamauro, Second Team Pitcher - Smallwood, and several Honorable Mention players, including Outfielder Conklin, Junior Outfielder Andrew Perks, Senior Catcher A.J. Viccora, Senior Pitcher Durbin, and Senior Pitcher Ryan Ramirez.

Boys Tennis

The team fell to a tough Thomas Jefferson team last week in the Occoquan Regional Final to finish as runners-up in the region. The team next advances to the state tournament next week. Last night, Ryan Battaglia won his quarterfinal Regionals Singles match, and Nam Duong and Ryan Battaglia won their Regional Doubles quarterfinal match. Come out to Fairfax HS today at 3:30 to cheer them on in their semifinal matches. Go CAVS!

Crew

The crew team traveled to Philadelphia, PA to participate in The Stotesbury Cup Regatta this last weekend. Stotesbury has been held continuously since 1927 - so it is the largest and oldest high school regatta in the United States. This year, 184 schools attended, with 4,274 athletes fielded in 896 boats. Your Cavaliers had an amazing few days of races and even made Woodson history when the Girls 2nd Varsity 8+ made finals and placed 4th overall. 4 of the 7 boats we raced made the semi-finals and we definitely put the WT Woodson name on the tip of everyone’s tongues. We have one more regatta next weekend to finish off the season - SRAA Nationals for the Women’s 1V and 2V boats!

Girls Lacrosse

Woodson girls’ lacrosse wins 2023 Patriot District Title!

The Wodson girls’ lacrosse team entered the Patriot District lacrosse tournament as the 2nd seed. In the 1st round, the Cavaliers faced off against the Fairfax Lions at home. Woodson had the game under control, winning 15 to 1. The entire Woodson team saw action including the JV squad call-ups. The Lady Cavs were back at home at Pat Cunningham stadium playing against the West Potomac Wolverines for the 2nd round of the tournament. The Wolverines took an early 3 - 0 lead, but Woodson was able to score two before the half. Senior Jillian Ferrari dominated draw controls in the 2nd half, keeping ball control and offensive momentum firmly in Woodson’s favor. Outstanding shooting by Senior Genna Cooke, and Juniors Alex Walrath and Reese Cuviello put the Cavs ahead. The Cavs beat the Wolverines 9 to 5 and moved on to the district championship game.

The district championship game took Woodson to the number one seeded cross-town rival Robinson Rams. Woodson’s defense led by seniors Caitlin Tran, Sophia White, and Juniors Ella Mathias, Jaime Ellenberger, stifled Robinsons high scoring offense through solid one on one, and defensive back up play. Woodson jumped out to an early lead. A few Woodson turnovers kept the game close, but Woodson was able to stay ahead and defeated Robinson 11 to 9 for the Patriot District Title.

The Lady Cavs played Lake Braddock in the Occoquan Regional quarterfinals on Monday.

Underclass Students - Will You Be Returning to Woodson Next Year?

If your student intends to attend Woodson next year, there is no need to complete or return the form.

FCPS NEWS & EVENTS DMV Learners Permit Tests at Woodson

Woodson is pleased to announce that students can take the Virginia DMV learner’s permit test at Woodson. Students will use their school issued laptops and will be given a login just as they do for the SOL tests. If they do NOT have a school laptop, they must contact Mr. O'Hara ahead of time. Personal laptops do NOT work for the test.

Students will be eligible to test if they are 15 years 6 months or older on the following Tuesdays at 3:15pm in Room C108: May 23rd

Steps to complete the process: You must register in TWO places: ACE (for payment) and DMV for the test ticket.

Payment: First you must register through the ACE and pay $20.
Register for this test event at DMV Registration (Internet Explorer 9 or higher or Safari).
A customer number is not required, but if you have a DMV ID card you must enter the name, DOB and customer number exactly as it appears on your DMV ID card. Otherwise, enter your full legal name and date of birth and leave the customer number field blank.
Please provide a parent or student’s email to receive registration confirmation, test results, notification of changes to the date and time or cancellation of the test event.
Before taking the two part knowledge test, please STUDY the Driver’s Manual located on DMV’s website.

Laptop Tech Support Hours

If students need FCPS laptop technical support at Woodson HS, please submit a ticket using the FCPS Parent/Student Tech Support Portal.

Our walk-in hours in Room A114 are:

Odd Days during Learning Seminar
Monday - 7:45am - 8:10am
Wednesday - 2:55pm - 4:00pm (when late buses start)

Any other time you should try to make an appointment using a ticket from the Support Portal.

Late Buses Available Tuesdays and Wednesdays

Late buses are available Tuesdays and Wednesdays through spring. Students may stay after school to participate in clubs/activities and/or receive academic intervention with teachers.

Tuesday and Wednesday late buses start loading around 4:45pm and depart from Woodson at approximately 5:15pm. Students who access the smaller bus runs need to sign up for a bus in Room F122 before lunch each late bus day.

Please note, students may NOT go across the street to the shopping center after school and then return for the late bus.

Staying Home When Sick

FCPS continues to require families to review the Daily Health Screening before sending students to school. The 5 Day Isolation Period will also continue for COVID positive students and staff.

Good afternoon Woodson Families:

Senior families - There are only 18 days until graduation! This issue is full of information to help make these last days of high school run smoothly.

Junior families - Are you ready for your child to become a senior? The Junior class engaged in Junior Focus Day this week. If you have not discussed this experience with your teen, please do so. Many tidbits of information were shared to get ready for the fall. If you want to review the information to get ready for the next chapter in your child’s life, please visit the Junior Focus Day Padlet. Also, see story #10 for the first session of senior portraits with Victor O'Neill studios and view this Junior Padlet for lots of information on post-secondary planning.

On a serious note, I am distraught to report that we have had several incidents of anti-Semitic and racial slurs spoken in school and written on bathroom walls. In past years, these incidents of vandalism have occurred, however; over the last few weeks, we have seen a large uptick in this inappropriate behavior.

We do not allow such behavior and will discipline anyone we find engaging in such activity. Please help us by reminding your child that drawing things like swastikas and writing hateful messages or words on walls is grossly inappropriate, hurtful and has no place at Woodson High School.

NEW News 1. Cavs Got Talent - TONIGHT!

This year’s Talent Show, CAVS Got Talent, is tonight, Friday May 19th at 7:00 pm in the Woodson Auditorium. Come watch the unique talents of a variety of Woodson students.

The winners get $100, and the audience will get to help choose the winners. Tickets are $5 and are on sale all week between the cafeterias and online. Order Tickets in Advance

2. Relay for Life Fundraising Event on Saturday

The Relay for Life Club is asking you to join them on Saturday, May 20th for an overnight fundraising event to bring the Woodson Community together in the fight against cancer.

Some of the events they have planned include Zumba, Karaoke, live band performances, luminaria ceremony, running relay, capture the flag, and so much more.

A student must pay $15 at the door to stay until 11 PM, or fundraise $100 to stay overnight. Please email Mrs. Hamrock [email protected] if you have any questions.

9. Drama Cappies Nominations

The Cappies (Critics and Awards Program) is an international program which was launched in FCPS. It recognizes, celebrates, and provides learning experiences for high school theater and journalism students, and teenage playwrights. In the National Capital Area, a Gala awards ceremony is held at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. every June.

Little Shop of Horrors is one of only a handful of FCPS musicals that have been nominated for the Brandon Dixon Musical Awards. We are nominated for two of the four categories:

Little Shop of Horrors is nominated for Outstanding Technical Design

Woodson Drama also received 6 Cappie award nominations – including five acting award nominations – in an incredibly competitive DMV region featuring nearly 40 total schools.

11. Rising Freshman Academy - Save the Date!

Do you have a rising 9th grader for the 2023-2024 school year? If so, save the date - August 8th, 9th, or 10th - for our Freshman Academy.

The goal of the Academy is to prepare rising 9th graders for the transition to high school with tours, tips, and hints with Woodson teachers and staff.

12. Remind Teens to Practice Safe Driving

It’s a very exciting time of year for many teens: longer days, nicer weather, and end of year/graduation activities.

Please remind teen drivers of the responsibilities that come with driving. According to this video from the Fairfax County Police Department, there were 622 crashes involving teen drivers last year in Fairfax County. Common mistakes among those drivers include failure to maintain proper control (distracted driver/texting and/or speeding), not having the right of way, and following too close (tailgating).

Consider watching this video with your child as a way of showing the real consequences of unsafe driving. FCPD shared footage of a recent incident where speeding led to a serious, but non-fatal, accident. In a news release, FCPD stated, “Parents and guardians should consider using this video as an opportunity to have a conversation with their teen drivers about how their driving behavior can affect the lives of others.”

Attention Class of 2023

The Senior Awards Ceremony will take place on Friday, June 2, 2023, 9:45 – 11:15 am in the Woodson Auditorium. We look forward to celebrating our Class of 2023 by recognizing their academic achievements, U.S. Service Academy appointments and ROTC scholarships, military enlistments, as well as our Woodson faculty and leadership awards. Seniors who report receipt of a scholarship will have their name and scholarship (but not the amount) listed on a rolling slide and in our printed program. To report a scholarship, seniors should complete this survey. The survey closes on May 24, and can only be accessed by students, who must use their fcpsschools.net account to access it. We ask that Seniors only report scholarships that they are actually using, not every scholarship they may have earned in total. Personal invitations will go out no later than May 24th to students who are receiving an award at the ceremony. All seniors, regardless of whether they are receiving an award or not, are invited to join us to celebrate their classmates. Dress code for the ceremony is business casual. PTSO NEWS Snack Wagon Success!

Thank you to everyone that contributed to the snack wagon last Friday to wrap up Teacher Appreciation week; and to Sara Mastro and Diane Raffaele for their help that day. The teachers and staff love being able to pick snacks and drinks to stash in their desks to help fuel them through these last few hectic weeks of the school year.

A special thanks to outgoing PTSO President Miklos Kiss, pictured at left above, for organizing the snack wagon, and for his ongoing leadership. He has been a huge asset to the Woodson High School community and will be missed!

Thirty-three students from six Fairfax County public high schools earned DECA’s highest honors at the organization’s annual International Career Development Conference.

Congratulations to Woodson senior Ryan Augustine! He won the finalist award and presentation award in Financial Consulting.

Varsity Baseball

The Woodson Varsity baseball team finished the regular season with three games in one week. On May 1, the Cavaliers hosted the Oakton Cougars. Scott “the Durbinator” Durbin was outstanding on the hill for Woodson, striking out three, and yielding just three hits, in his six innings of work. Senior Co-Captain Ben Smallwood came on in the 7th and Oakton used three hits and an error to score two runs, but he got the final out to save the 4-2 win.

Woodson next hit the road to face the Alexandria City Titans. Andrew Viccora had two hits to pace the Cavs offensive attack, while Ryan Ramirez pitched brilliantly, giving up just four hits and one run in five innings and striking out three. Woodson prevailed 6-5.

Woodson closed out the regular season by hosting the West Potomac Wolverines on senior night. Eight seniors suited up for the Cavaliers for their last regular-season game of their high school careers.The Cavs started strong at the plate, with three consecutive singles, before a clutch, two-out single by Viccora knocked in the game’s first run. The Cavs grew their lead in the 4th, using a hit batsman, a walk, a wild pitch, and a single by Senior Jayson Kozick to make it 4-0. Brandon Shelhorse crushed a center-field home run (his 5th homer of the year), and extended the Woodson lead to 7-0. The night belonged to Smallwood who struck out the side in the 7th for the complete-game victory. Smallwood gave up just four hits and one earned run while striking out eight.

On the season, Smallwood struck out 45 hitters in 46 innings. Other impressive regular-season stats include Santamauro’s team-leading .474 batting average and 10 doubles. Shelhorse hit .400, with eight doubles and 26 runs batted in, and he also led the team with a .992 field percentage.

Boys Tennis

Last week, the team was awarded their District Champion medals. Junior Ryan Battaglia won the District Singles title in a marathon 3 set match against West Springfield’s Justin Lo. In District Doubles, Senior Nam Duong and Ryan Battaglia fell short to West Springfield’s doubles team to earn 2nd place in the District.

Team Regional play started this week, with the Cavs defeating West Potomac in the quarterfinals. Come out to the Woodson courts on Wednesday at 2:30 to support them in their semifinal match. Go Cavs!

Crew

The second day of the Virginia State Rowing Championships took place on Saturday and was just as exciting as the first! Woodson raced their Women’s and Men’s 1st and 2nd Varsity 8+ boats. We are proud to report that your Women’s 1st and 2nd Varsity crews qualified for NATIONALS by placing 3rd and 2nd in the state for their divisions, respectively. This year, the Scholastic Rowing Association of America’s Championship Regatta determines the North American Champions for the year and takes place in Oak Ridge, TN on May 25-26.

The Men’s team performed well with the Men’s 1st Varsity 8+ finishing 3rd in the Petite Final while the Men’s 2nd Varsity 8+ finished 5th in the state.

Next weekend, on May 19-20, Woodson Crew will attend the Stotesbury Cup Regatta in Philadelphia, PA. Stotesbury is the oldest and largest high school regatta in the US, and takes place annually on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.

Varsity Softball

The Woodson Varsity Softball team pulled out a dramatic 3-2 win last Thursday night on the road at West Potomac in the Patriot District Quarterfinal playoffs.

Down 2-1 entering their final at-bat, Woodson plated 2 runs to pull ahead. Claire Warden led off with a single to left field. She was replaced on the base paths by courtesy runner Maia Kim. The speedy Kim advanced to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Ally Geronime. Sarah Banker followed and delivered with a triple line drive to left center field to bring in Kim and tie the score at 2. Two batters later, Emma Fleming’s sacrifice fly to right field plated Banker with the winning run after she tagged up from third base.

Three defensive gems by the Cavs in the field kept West Potomac off the scoreboard in their last at bat. Fleming reached high at second base to snag a hard line drive for the first out. With a Wolverine runner on first, shortstop Syd Huffman made a nice fielder’s choice to get the lead runner at second for out number 2. Finally with runners on first and second, right fielder Ceci Temple made a running grab of a hot shot to seal the win with the third and final out.

Other notable highlights of the game include: Sedona Adams with a triple and driving in a run. Elizabeth Schneider went 2 for 3 at the plate, with a double and single. Sam Klein contributed offensively with a double.

Warden got the win in the circle pitching a complete game.

Underclass Students - Will You Be Returning to Woodson Next Year?

If your student intends to attend Woodson next year, there is no need to complete or return the form.

FCPS NEWS & EVENTS DMV Learners Permit Tests at Woodson

Students will be eligible to test if they are 15 years 6 months or older on the following Tuesdays at 3:15pm in Room C108: May 23rd

Steps to complete the process: You must register in TWO places: ACE (for payment) and DMV for the test ticket.

Payment: First you must register through the ACE and pay $20.
Register for this test event at DMV Registration (Internet Explorer 9 or higher or Safari).
A customer number is not required, but if you have a DMV ID card you must enter the name, DOB and customer number exactly as it appears on your DMV ID card. Otherwise, enter your full legal name and date of birth and leave the customer number field blank.
Please provide a parent or student’s email to receive registration confirmation, test results, notification of changes to the date and time or cancellation of the test event.
Before taking the two part knowledge test, please STUDY the Driver’s Manual located on DMV’s website.

Laptop Tech Support Hours

If students need FCPS laptop technical support at Woodson HS, please submit a ticket using the FCPS Parent/Student Tech Support Portal.

Late Buses Available Tuesdays and Wednesdays

Late buses are available Tuesdays and Wednesdays through spring. Students may stay after school to participate in clubs/activities and/or receive academic intervention with teachers.

Please note, students may NOT go across the street to the shopping center after school and then return for the late bus.

Staying Home When Sick

FCPS continues to require families to review the Daily Health Screening before sending students to school. The 5 Day Isolation Period will also continue for COVID positive students and staff.

Good afternoon Woodson Families,

This week we celebrated Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week! Our staff is the glue that holds us together. Their hard work, extensive hours spent on preparing for classes, and time helping students succeed both inside and outside the classroom, is immeasurable and never adequately recognized. This week we say thank you. We appreciate your hard work and tireless energy.

Kudos to the PTSO for contributing to Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week by creating the snack wagon again this year. The variety of items was appreciated by staff and it provided the pick–me-up needed to finish the week.

To our senior families: we cross yet another milestone this weekend – Prom! We are looking forward to seeing the students who choose to attend the Enchanted Forrest Event this Saturday.

We finished AP exams this week and are looking to SOLs over the next two weeks along with senior finals. There are 25 days until graduation… let’s end strong!

2. Join the Woodson XC and Track Team for a Distance Twilight Meet - TONIGHT

The Woodson Cross Country and Track teams are hosting a track meet that will have a portion open to the community on Friday, May 12th at 6:30pm. There will be a middle school heat, a Woodson student heat, and an open community heat for all comers of the 1 mile run.

The entry fee to the meet is $5 which makes spectators eligible for the 1 mile community heats. All you need to do is place your name on the registration list at the check-in table. Please arrive no later than 1 hour prior to the anticipated start of the race.

Before and after the community run, enjoy the HS meet and see our athletes compete along with local high schools.

4. Celebrate Your Plan Day

Celebrate Your Plan Day will be on Monday, May 15th during all lunches (11:20 am - 1:20 pm) in the Auditorium Lobby.

What is your plan after High School? Employment, College, Trade School, Military Service, Gap Year or maybe an Apprenticeship? We want to celebrate you and all of the different post-secondary plans!

Celebrate Your Plan Day (formerly known as Balloon Day) has been a Woodson tradition for many years. Seniors will post paper balloons, with their plans written on them, on the windows in the Auditorium Lobby where they will be on display until after graduation. We will also have some treats, music & photo opportunities. Let’s celebrate!

Cav Kudos! These students were recognized for helping Woodson build a great school culture one interaction at a time.

5. Junior Focus Day - May 18th

Please mark your calendar for Woodson’s first Junior Focus Day on May 18th during 1st & 3rd period. During this “in-house field trip,” Juniors will have the opportunity to attend various breakout sessions to explore postsecondary options and also learn about the college application and admissions process.

All Juniors will meet in the Auditorium at 8:10am for a presentation from Student Services as well as an opening keynote from a guest speaker. At 8:45am, Juniors will proceed to the first of three breakout sessions. Junior Focus Day will run through all of 1st and 3rd periods, and conclude at 11:15am when 5th period begins.

6. Cavs Got Talent

This year’s Talent Show, CAVS Got Talent, is Friday May 19th at 7:00 pm in the Woodson Auditorium. Come watch the unique talents of a variety of Woodson students.

The winners get $100, and the audience will get to help choose the winners. Tickets are $5 and are on sale all week between the cafeterias and online. Order Tickets in Advance

See a variety of acts including singing, dancing, instrumentals, a band, and much more. Also, we have room for one or two more acts. Contact [email protected] for more information.

7. Relay for Life Fundraising Event

The Relay for Life Club is asking you to join them on Saturday, May 20th for an overnight fundraising event to bring the Woodson Community together in the fight against cancer.

Some of the events they have planned include Zumba, Karaoke, live band performances, luminaria ceremony, running relay, capture the flag, and so much more.

A student must pay $15 at the door to stay until 11 PM, or fundraise $100 to stay overnight. Please email Mrs. Hamrock [email protected] if you have any questions.

The Virginia General Assembly passed a resolution commending Blair Smith, Woodson's current Director of Student Activities for the Outstanding School-Based Professional Employee of 2022 award when he was the assistant director of student activities at Centreville HS.

8. Woodson Student Earns Awards at DECA International Conference

Thirty-three students from six Fairfax County public high schools earned DECA’s highest honors at the organization’s annual International Career Development Conference.

Congratulations to Woodson senior, Ryan Augustine! He won the finalist award and presentation award in Financial Consulting.

DECA is a career and technical student organization that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs to be college- and career-ready. The competitions are designed to simulate real-life business scenarios and test students’ academic understanding and skills development.

In the Commonwealth of Virginia, DECA members are enrolled in a marketing education class at their high schools. More information about DECA is available online.

10. Spring 2023 SOL Testing

SOL Season – Laptops and Personal Electronic Devices

Students are required to use FCPS-issued laptops for SOL testing. Students are responsible for making sure their software is up to date and their keyboards, screens, etc. are in good working order.

Spring 2023 SOL Testing

SOL Season - Laptops and Personal Electronic Devices

Students may not have access to their electronic personal devices of any kind (phones, watches, etc.) in the SOL testing environment, except in the case of a documented medical need. Please be aware that any personal devices carried into the testing environment will be subject to the school’s established procedures for addressing this as a test security concern.

The remaining SOL Testing Dates are:

Tuesday, May 16th - Algebra I & Algebra 2
Wednesday, May 17th – Geometry

Spring 2023 Advanced Placement (AP) Testing

AP Testing has continues this week. Students should report to Cafeteria B for morning exams no later than 7:45AM. Students should report for afternoon exams no later than 11:45AM to the Auditorium Lobby or Cav Hall. Students taking afternoon exams will not finish testing until 4:00PM. Please plan your transportation accommodations accordingly.

Only students with Woodson Parking Permits may park in school lots for AP testing.

Students may NOT bring backpacks, cell phones, smartwatches, etc. to AP testing rooms. Students must make arrangements to leave these items at home or in cars or lockers. Teachers and administrators are not responsible for student belongings.

No Morning Attendance Calls

Morning attendance notifications will be suspended from May 1st through June 2nd.

Additionally, all attendance notifications will be suspended for elementary, middle, and high on the last day of school.

Student Services

Counselors have been busy supporting seniors with their post-secondary plans while working with all students to finish the year off on a positive note!

Senior students visited NOVA on April 24th and learned about the registration process and services offered while getting a tour of the campus.

Senior Surveys will take place May 16th & 17th. Counselors will meet with seniors in their Government classes to facilitate the completion of this survey for all seniors. On May 22nd students in online Government classes, and those seniors not taking Government this year, will complete the Senior Survey.

Junior Focus Day will take place May 18th! This is an in-house field trip for all Juniors that will take place during 1st and 3rd periods. A number of guest speakers will be on hand to facilitate sessions and present on topics including: College Applications, NOVA, Common Application, College Essay Writing, Admissions Officers Panel, Military Info, Apprenticeships, Employment, and Financial Aid for College.

Wellness lessons for Sophomores will continue in Health classes for 4th Quarter to review the Signs of Suicide information, and also remind students how to access supports for mental health. Sophomores who have already had Health in quarters 1, 2, or 3, have already received this information.

Additionally, please know that counselors will be proctoring AP exams May 1st – May 12th and may have limited availability and longer response times to emails. We appreciate your understanding and patience.

We’re excited to continue to partner with parents/guardians in support of our students. Here’s to a great 4th quarter and a strong finish to the school year!

Celebrate Your Plan Day will be on Monday, May 15th during all lunches (11:20 am - 1:20 pm) in the Auditorium Lobby. What is your plan after High School? Employment, College, Trade School, Military Service, Gap Year...? We want to celebrate you and all of the different post-secondary plans! Celebrate Your Plan Day (formerly known as Balloon Day) has been a Woodson tradition for many years. Seniors will post paper balloons, with their plans written on them, on the windows in the Auditorium Lobby where they will be on display until after graduation. We’ll also have some treats available for seniors as well. We can’t wait to celebrate our seniors!!!

Senior Prom Tickets and Guest Form

The Woodson Senior Prom, Enchanted Forest, will be held this Saturday, May 13th at Westwood Country Club (800 Maple Ave E, Vienna).

Prom tickets will be sold during all lunches through Friday, May 12th. Tickets are $75 each. Students can purchase tickets with debit or credit cards, cash, or check (made to Woodson HS).

All student financial obligations must be met before a student is able to purchase their ticket or a ticket is purchased for them, including parking tickets, library fees, senior dues, course fees and tech fees.

If you plan to bring a guest to prom who is not a Woodson student, please complete the Prom Guest Application and turn it in to your administrator by Wednesday, May 10th for approval.

Prom Guest Applications must be approved before a ticket can be purchased for the guest. Forms may be picked up from the main office.

WOODSON CLUBS & ACTIVITIES Woodson Chorus

We hoped the community enjoyed the talented voices of many chorus students in the theater department’s production of Little Shop of Horrors. If you missed it, you still have two chances to catch the show - Friday, May 12 at 7pm and Sunday, May 14 at 7pm.

Woodson Drama

Little Shop of Horrors is the dark rock musical that grabbed audiences in the 80’s, and now it’s back at Woodson and bigger than ever! The musical centers on a hapless flower shop worker, Seymour, and his new exotic plant that happens to have a...particular diet. The mere presence of the plant in the window quickly brings traffic to the small shop, and the owner, Mushnik, promotes Seymour because of it. Seymour even finally catches the interest of Audrey, his coworker who's been stuck in a relationship with a sadistic dentist, Orin. All, it seems, because of the plant. But the plant's appetite continues to grow and grow. And it demands MORE! Surely this Faustian thing will stay in its pot and not cause trouble as long as Seymour keeps it happy, right?

Woodson UNICEF Club

The Student Peace Awards of Fairfax County began in 2006 to encourage people to think more about peace as both a means and an end, and to recognize young people who work as peacemakers. Every year, the high schools in Fairfax County are asked to select one junior or senior, or a group of students, whose work has promoted peace. The project is organized by volunteers and funded by donations from 17 secular and religious sponsoring organizations.

The Woodson's UNICEF Club (Sophia Huh, Katelyn Tran, Jacqueline Truong, and Roen Dioquino) supports children in need around the world, defending their rights, and helping them live fulfilling lives. Monthly meetings of the club have raised student awareness through presentations and discussions on issues like child immunization, the Ukraine crisis, and gender equality. In the past year, the club has raised money for UNICEF’s annual Trick-or-Treat campaign that helps underprivileged children around the world with health care, safe water and sanitation, education, and emergency relief.

The club also recently organized a winter clothing drive for low-income families in the area and has sent “Letters and Artwork for Hope” to Ukrainian refugee children and also to pediatric patients at Inova hospitals.

CAVS SPORTS

Boys Varsity Lacrosse

The Woodson Boys Varsity Lacrosse team had its last regular season game last week against West Potomac. The Cavs were looking to exact a bit of revenge after having their season end last year in the Regional semi-finals when West Potomac won in an agonizing triple overtime game. The boys started slow, going down by three goals. The team battled back and were even leading 7-6 in the third quarter. Unfortunately, West Potomac took the lead 12-11 late in the fourth quarter. The Wolverines smartly were able to keep possession and run out the clock to preserve a hard fought victory.

The team kept their heads high and looked ahead to District playoffs. The Cavs squared off against the three-seed Spartans of West Springfield. On a mild spring night under a full moon, the Cavs were down 1-0 at the end of the first quarter. The Woodson offense sprung to life with two beautiful goals by Senior Leo Lee. Junior Cameron Marks added to the goal scoring and also took a strong shot that was going wide of the West Springfield goalie. But on May the Fourth, the Force was with the Cavs in the form of Freshman Shannon Force as he spied the shot going wide and amazingly had the skill and concentration to slap it into the goal like a hockey shot. Leo Lee kept up his offensive tour de force with yet another goal, giving him his first hat-trick of the season. Cameron Marks also had one more goal for a half-time score of 6-3.

West Springfield went on a tear as they scored four unanswered goals to take the lead at 9-8. Freshman Roman Braswell hustled to a rebounded shot and slammed it into the goal to end the scoring drought. The game was then tied 9-9 and the Spartans had the ball with 90 seconds left. The Cavs stellar Defense of Evan Barnard, Matt Hyder, Luke Tryon, Soren Ebbeson, Tanner Watts, Nate Lester and Goalie Aidan Dash took it to another level to withstand a barrage of West Springfield assaults on goal and were impressively able to preserve the tie and push the game to overtime.

Junior Andrew Brewington out-dueled his Spartan counterpart at face-off and vitally procured the ball. The Cavs immediately called time-out to draw up the play they hoped would win the game. Cameron Marks started the possession with the ball, took it behind the goal and then quickly passed it to Senior Captain Walker Smith. Walker came under pressure but ably got the ball to Senior Chris Kang. Chris darted back and forth before getting the ball back to Cameron Marks who immediately made his move toward the goal. The Spartans converged on Cameron, smacked him with their sticks and illegally pushed him to the ground - provoking a penalty flag. In lacrosse, like in hockey, you keep playing when a penalty is called until there is a change of possession. Cameron saw the flag but decided he wanted to end the game here and now. He rapidly got back up, pushed through three West Springfield defenders, turned and ripped a pretty left-handed shot into the bottom-left of the goal. Cameron raised his arms in sudden-death victory and ran to the middle of the field where he was enveloped in a dog-pile of celebrating teammates. Another exciting team win by Boys Varsity!!!

Woodson fell to two-seed Lake Braddock in the Patriot District Semifinals. The Cavs now move onto Regional playoffs. LET’S GO CAVS!!!

Varsity Baseball

On April 25, the Cavaliers hosted the West Springfield Spartans, the second place team in the Patriot District. Senior Co-Captain Ben Smallwood got the start for Woodson and made quick work of the visiting Spartans in the first two innings.

Woodson rallied in the fourth when Senior Ian Santamauro stroked his team-leading 10th double of the season. Senior Co-Captain Brandon Shelhorse followed by launching a rocket over the centerfield fence, for his team-leading 4th home run of the year, knotting things at two. The Spartans went back on top in the 5th, and the Cavaliers tried to rally after a lead-off double by Moore and a one-out single by Junior Ethan Conklin. However, a double play ended that threat. Woodson also managed two base runners in the 6th, but were unable to push the tying run across. In the 3-2 loss, Santamauro and Conklin had two hits each for Woodson. Pitcher Smallwood threw another gem, working seven innings and giving up just six hits, and two earned runs and striking out five and walking none. Smallwood lowered his earned run average to 2.67 in the process.

The Cavaliers then faced the undefeated Lake Braddock Bruins. Lake Braddock used a two-run homer to jump out on top 2-0 after one, and scored two more in the second. The Cavaliers rallied in the 4th, using two singles by Gordon and Santamauro, a sacrifice fly off the bat of Shelhorse, and a booming double by Junior Co-Captain Andrew Perks to pull within two at 4-2. Moore started for Woodson and did a good job holding the Bruins down for three innings and keeping the game close. However, the bats of the Bruins were too much, as they scored six runs over the next three innings to pull away for the 10-2 win. For Woodson, Shelhorse drove in his team-leading 22nd run of the season, while Santamauro notched another hit, boosting his team-high average to .510.

JV Baseball

The Woodson JV baseball team earned a 4-2 victory on May 4 against the visiting Alexandria City Titans. The Cavs relied on flawless defense, timely hitting, and a gem of a performance from pitcher Brody Walkinshaw.

The Titans jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. But the Cavs quickly rallied in the bottom half of the frame. Shortstop Nicholas Prabhakar reached base on a walk, and then advanced to third on left fielder Nicholas Smith’s line drive single to right. Then the Cavs got aggressive on the base paths. Prabhakar stole home to tie the game, while Smith stole second then advanced to third on an error. Second baseman Gunnar Greenlee’s RBI brought Smith in to score, giving the Cavaliers a 2-1 lead heading into the second inning.

The middle innings of the game were dominated by the defenses. Walkinshaw retired 11 of the next 12 Titans’ batters, and then worked out of trouble in the fifth. In the top of that frame, the Titans threatened to tie or take the lead with runners on second and third and two outs. But Walkinshaw coaxed a ground ball to third, where Bryce Goltry made a nice play on the ball and threw across the diamond to first baseman Barrett Pullen for the third out, ending the inning.

In the top of the sixth, the Titans seemed poised to break the game open. They tied the score at 2 and had a runner on third with two outs. The next batter hit a deep fly ball down the third base line that appeared to be an extra base hit that would give the Titans the lead. But left fielder Smith turned on the jets, tracked down the ball, and made a sprinting, twisting catch to preserve the tie heading into the bottom of the sixth.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Cavs’ bats got working. Prabhakar singled to right, and then Smith singled to left, advancing Prabhakar to second. Goltry then put the ball in play down the third base side, and both Prabhakar and Smith scored on the play, giving the Cavs a 4-2 lead.

The Titans threatened again in the top of the seventh. The first batter singled, and then advanced to second on a fielder’s choice. Ultimately, though, Walkinshaw and battery mate Timothy Lee worked out of trouble just as they had all game. With two outs, a runner on second and the tying run at the plate, the Cavs clinched the victory on a flyout to left.

Walkinshaw’s final line sparkled – a complete game, 102 pitch, 3 strikeout masterpiece. The defense was stout; Smith, Evan Honeysett, and Jack McSorley patrolled the outfield, while Pullen, Greenlee, Prabhakar and Goltry worked with Walkinshaw and Lee to lock down the infield. Yariel Landestoy provided good at bats as the designated hitter, while Ray Rivera offered late inning defensive prowess. It was a complete team effort and a great win.

Boys Tennis

The boys tennis team had an undefeated regular season and clinched the Patriot District title! They will advance to Regional team quarterfinals next week after receiving 1st and 2nd round byes this week.

Ryan Battaglia advanced to the Patriot District singles finals; and Nam Duong and Ryan Battaglia advanced to the district doubles finals. Both finals matches will be played today, Tuesday, May 9, at Fairfax. Singles at 3:30, followed by doubles. (Raindate is Wednesday, May 10). Come out to cheer on our Cavs and see great tennis!

Day 1 of the Virginia State Rowing Championships found 5 different boats representing Woodson; Women’s 3rd Varsity, Novice 8+, Novice 4+ and Men’s 3rd and 4th Varsity. We are proud to report that your Women’s 3rd Varsity and Novice 8+ are STATE CHAMPIONS, winning their races by a landfall. The Women’s 3rd Varsity won with a time of 5:50.3, besting the 2nd place Langley boat by 0:10.2. The Women’s Novice 8+ rowed a 5:54.5, besting the 2nd placeSouth County by 0:04.5 The women’s Novice 4+, which was only recently put together, took 4th place in their heat with a time of 7:19.6

The Men’s team also had great success with the Men’s 3rd Varsity coming in 6th in the state. The Men’s 4th Varsity, which is composed of a combination of first time and experienced rowers, came in second in the state by a margin of 0:00.1!! It was a nail biter of a race.

Look for the 2 new trophies in the case next time you’re at the school!

Day 2 of the Virginia State Rowing Championships takes place on Saturday, May 13 at Sandy Run Training facility in Fairfax Station, VA. Woodson will be represented by the 1st and 2nd Varsity boats for both the Men’s and Women’s teams. Please wish them luck as we #PullForWoodson!

Softball

The Woodson Varsity Softball team celebrated Senior Night on Friday honoring its three graduating Seniors, Ally Geronime (#8), Elizabeth Schneider (#9) and Sarah Banker (#10).

Unfortunately, Woodson fell short losing to West Potomac 9-3. Woodson was led by the bat of Sam Klein who went 2-3 including a 2-run triple. Banker, Emma Fleming, and Syd Huffman also contributed with 2 hits apiece. Ceci Temple, pitching in relief, allowed only 1 run on 5 hits in the final 5 innings.

Earlier in the week, the Cavs traveled to Alexandria to face the Titans. Woodson scored 6 runs in the second inning and cruised to a 19-3 victory. Temple got the pitching victory, allowing 0 runs and striking out 5 in her 3-innings of work. Offensively, Woodson was led by Penny Elliott who drove in 5 runs on her 2 hits. Sedona Adams had a double and drove in 4 runs. Claire Warden went 3-3 and drove in a run.

Underclass Students - Will You Be Returning to Woodson Next Year?

If your student intends to attend Woodson next year, there is no need to complete or return the form.

FCPS NEWS & EVENTS DMV Learners Permit Tests at Woodson

Students will be eligible to test if they are 15 years 6 months or older on the following Tuesdays at 3:15pm in Room C108: May 23rd

Steps to complete the process: You must register in TWO places: ACE (for payment) and DMV for the test ticket.

Payment: First you must register through the ACE and pay $20.
Register for this test event at DMV Registration (Internet Explorer 9 or higher or Safari).
A customer number is not required, but if you have a DMV ID card you must enter the name, DOB and customer number exactly as it appears on your DMV ID card. Otherwise, enter your full legal name and date of birth and leave the customer number field blank.
Please provide a parent or student’s email to receive registration confirmation, test results, notification of changes to the date and time or cancellation of the test event.
Before taking the two part knowledge test, please STUDY the Driver’s Manual located on DMV’s website.

Laptop Tech Support Hours

If students need FCPS laptop technical support at Woodson HS, please submit a ticket using the FCPS Parent/Student Tech Support Portal.

Our walk-in hours in Room A114 are:

Odd Days during Learning Seminar
Monday - 7:45am - 8:10am
Wednesday - 2:55pm - 4:00pm (when late buses start)

Any other time you should try to make an appointment using a ticket from the Support Portal.

Late Buses Available Tuesdays and Wednesdays

Late buses are available Tuesdays and Wednesdays through spring. Students may stay after school to participate in clubs/activities and/or receive academic intervention with teachers.

Please note, students may NOT go across the street to the shopping center after school and then return for the late bus.

Staying Home When Sick

FCPS continues to require families to review the Daily Health Screening before sending students to school. The 5 Day Isolation Period will also continue for COVID positive students and staff.

Hello Woodson Families!

Happy Friday and opening night for Little Shop of Horrors. You can find the schedule and purchase tickets here.

Next week is the 2nd week of AP and SOL exams. Also next week we will celebrate our teachers and staff for Teacher Appreciation Week.

Families - please take a minute to thank your kid’s teachers. Just a quick email of thanks, or a pat on the back goes a long way. Our teachers do not teach for the monetary reward; they do it because they truly care about the future of our world. They want to positively impact this generation of mathematicians, leaders, scientists, performers, tradespeople, and literary heroes. This post pandemic world is like nothing we have ever seen in education. Please, take a moment to say thank you.

I look forward to seeing many of you at Little Shop, District matches, and end of the year activities. Let’s end strong!

NEW News 1. Say "Thank You!" to Your Favorite Teacher

May 8th through 12th is Teacher Appreciation Week.

2. Woodson Drama Presents - Little Shop of Horrors

Based on a 1960 black comedy film, the Little Shop of Horrors musical centers on a hapless flower shop worker, Seymour, and his new exotic plant that happens to have a...particular diet. The mere presence of the plant in the window quickly brings traffic to the small shop, and the owner, Mushnik, promotes Seymour because of it. Seymour even finally catches the interest of Audrey, his coworker who's been stuck in a relationship with a sadistic dentist, Orin. All, it seems, because of the plant. But the plant's appetite continues to grow and grow. And it demands MORE! Surely this Faustian thing will stay in its pot and not cause trouble as long as Seymour keeps it happy, right?

This dark rock musical grabbed audiences in the 80’s and now it’s back at Woodson and bigger than ever!

4. Senior Prom Tickets and Guest Form

The Woodson Senior Prom, Enchanted Forest, will be held on Saturday, May 13th at Westwood Country Club (800 Maple Ave E, Vienna).

Prom tickets will be sold during all lunches through Friday, May 12th. Tickets are $75 each. Students can purchase tickets with debit or credit cards, cash, or check (made to Woodson HS).

If you plan to bring a guest to prom who is not a Woodson student, please complete the Prom Guest Application and turn it in to your administrator by Wednesday, May 10th for approval.

Prom Guest Applications must be approved before a ticket can be purchased for the guest. Forms may be picked up from the main office.

5. Woodson's UNICEF Club wins FCPS Student Peace Award

6. Spring 2023 SOL Testing

SOL Season – Laptops and Personal Electronic Devices

Students are required to use FCPS-issued laptops for SOL testing. Students are responsible for making sure their software is up to date and their keyboards, screens, etc. are in good working order.

Also, we want to remind families that students may not have access to their electronic personal devices of any kind (phones, watches, etc.) in the SOL testing environment, except in the case of a documented medical need. Please be aware that any personal devices carried into the testing environment will be subject to the school’s established procedures for addressing this as a test security concern.

Students - make a plan to store your belongings in your locker or car before your test date. Personal items may not be stored in the main office. There are phones in the office for student use if needed.

Hello Woodson community,

We need 3!

We need at least 3 people, from among the parents and guardians of the current 1,800+ freshman, sophomore, and junior students, to volunteer for the PTSO (Parent, Teacher, Student Organization) for the 23-24 school year.

Can you join us? Please let us know as soon as possible so we can have the positions filled for next year before the end of this school year.
Do you have a friend with whom you can volunteer and share a role? Let us know and we’ll work something out.

Volunteering for the PTSO does not take a lot of your time—just a desire to make people feel supported.

What does the PTSO do?

The PTSO is committed to supporting students, teachers, administrators, staff, parents, and guardians at Woodson.

The two largest contributions of the PTSO are the following:

Teacher and staff appreciation lunches.
Grant funding. Your PTSO membership dues and other donations pay for student and teacher grants. For example, the PTSO has supported student travel for Model UN, Girls’ States, DECA, Choir, and other valuable experiences; teacher requests for equipment; and more.

What are the roles and what’s involved in volunteering?

The roles of President, Communications Director, and Fundraising Director are open for next year:

President: Facilitates monthly meetings on Zoom; supports several PTSO initiatives and leads communications with school staff
Communications: Writes and sends out the weekly WeMail, manages social media
Fundraising: Finds ways for the PTSO to be supported by businesses, donations, etc.

PTSO NEWS Help Stock the Teacher Snack Wagon

As part of Teacher Appreciation Week, the PTSO will be supplying a Snack Wagon for our wonderful, hard-working teachers on Friday, 12 May.

We are looking for volunteers to donate items to stock the snack wagon. Non-perishables can be dropped off at the Woodson front office during the afternoon of May 11th. Perishable items (and late non-perishables) can be dropped off before 9:00 a.m. on May 12th.

Spring 2023 SOL Testing

Spring 2023 Advanced Placement (AP) Testing

AP Testing has begun. Students should report to Cafeteria B for morning exams no later than 7:45AM. Students should report for afternoon exams no later than 11:45AM to the Auditorium Lobby or Cav Hall. Students taking afternoon exams will not finish testing until 4:00PM. Please plan your transportation accommodations accordingly.

Only students with Woodson Parking Permits may park in school lots for AP testing.

No Morning Attendance Calls

Morning attendance notifications will be suspended from May 1st through June 2nd.

Additionally, all attendance notifications will be suspended for elementary, middle, and high on the last day of school.

Report Cards Distributed

3rd Quarter report cards were distributed to students Friday, April 28th, during 7th peiod.

If your student has an off-campus waiver or Academy class for 7th period, their report card is in the Student Services office for pickup.

Counselors have been busy supporting seniors with their post-secondary plans while working with all students to finish the year off on a positive note!

Senior students visited NOVA on April 24th and learned about the registration process and services offered while getting a tour of the campus.

We’re excited to continue to partner with parents/guardians in support of our students. Here’s to a great 4th quarter and a strong finish to the school year!

Underclass Students - Will You Be Returning to Woodson Next Year?

If your student intends to attend Woodson next year, there is no need to complete or return the form.

Host a French Student from July 6 to 28!

Join other host families in welcoming fifteen French students ages 15 to 17 to our community for a short visit to make new friends, visit Washington, D.C., experience the American way of life, and improve their English. Host families will enjoy a unique, rewarding, educational, cultural, and fun summer experience!

Students will arrive at Dulles International Airport on July 6th, and will need host family volunteers to provide a spare bed, three meals a day, and a willingness to welcome a student into the normal rhythm and activities of their home for three weeks in this State Department approved homestay program.

Sightseeing trips to Washington, D.C., originating at the Vienna Metro Station, will be provided on Tuesdays and Thursdays for the French students and any interested host siblings.

The other days of the week are for the student to spend time with you, their host family, immersed in the American way of life. To help hosts juggle hosting with vacations, the student can travel with their host family on vacation or two families can share the hosting of one teen.

Celebrate Your Plan Day will be on Monday, May 15th during all lunches (11:20 am - 1:20 pm) in the Auditorium Lobby. What is your plan after High School? Employment, College, Trade School, Military Service, Gap Year...? We want to celebrate you and all of the different post-secondary plans! Celebrate Your Plan Day (formerly known as Balloon Day) has been a Woodson tradition for many years. Seniors will post paper balloons, with their plans written on them, on the windows in the Auditorium Lobby where they will be on display until after graduation. We’ll also have some treats available for seniors as well. We can’t wait to celebrate our seniors!!!

Senior Prom Tickets and Guest Form

The Woodson Senior Prom, Enchanted Forest, will be held on Saturday, May 13th at Westwood Country Club (800 Maple Ave E, Vienna).

Prom tickets will be sold during all lunches Monday, May 1st through Friday, May 12th and at Senior Sunset. Tickets are $75 each. Students can purchase tickets with debit or credit cards, cash, or check (made to Woodson HS).

If you plan to bring a guest to prom who is not a Woodson student, please complete the Prom Guest Application and turn it in to your administrator by Wednesday, May 10th for approval.

Prom Guest Applications must be approved before a ticket can be purchased for the guest. Forms may be picked up from the main office.

WOODSON CLUBS & ACTIVITIES Woodson Chorus

Woodson Chorus encourages you to buy tickets to see many of our amazing singers perform in the theater department’s production of Little Shop of Horror. The show is May 5, 6, 6, 12, and 14. Find details and ticket link under Drama.

Boys Varsity Lacrosse

It’s been a busy month for Woodson’s Boy Lacrosse. Woodson hosted the Bruins of Lake Braddock on Tuesday, April 25th. Unfortunately, the Cavaliers were not able to match their highly-rated opponent in play, but never gave up the fight and went full charge until the end. Midfielder Cameron Marks had 4 goals and 1 assist and Defenseman, Matt Hyder and Attack, Roman Braswell each had 1 goal respectively. The game ended in a final score of 17-6.

Friday, April 28th was a cold and rainy Senior Night for Woodson where we recognized our 8 seniors for their hard work and dedication to the Boys Lacrosse team. The 2023 Seniors are: Evan Barnard, Ross Davidson, Matt Hyder, Chris Kang, Leo Lee, Nate Lester, Walker Smith and Hien Vo. The Cavs hosted the Titans of Alexandria City High School and this game proved to be a nail-biter of a victory. The 6 WTW goals were from four different Attackmen: Will Eby and Leo Lee each scored 2 goals and Shannon Force and Walker Smith added a goal each. Cameron Marks had 3 assists and Chris Kang had 2 assists. The Cavs Defense - led by Evan Barnard, Matt Hyder, Luke Tryon and Soren Ebbeson - played magnificently. This tight game was not over until the last second Titans’ shot ended up in the rain-soaked stick of Goalie Aiden Dash giving Woodson a tense come from behind 6-5 complete team win!

The very next day the Cavaliers traveled to South County HS to play in the “SoCo Invitational”. Here they took on the Wildcats of Centreville High School. This game proved to be a tough one as the Wildcats were a physical and talented opponent. The goals were back & forth and at one point, the Cavs found themselves down by 3. This however did not deter the team as Junior midfielder, Cameron Marks, went on a triumphant tear with 8 straight goals! Junior face-off specialist Andrew Brewington started the come-back by consistently winning the majority of his face-offs. Late in the game, Andrew won the face-off, drove the ball straight down the field for his 1st unassisted goal of the season and leaving the Cavs only two goals behind! A minute later Cameron Marks whistled a bullet of a shot past the head of the Wildcats goalie for his ninth goal of the day and the lads were now only a goal down. The game tying goal came from a beautiful pass of perfection by Senior Attackmen Chris Kang to Junior Will Eby. To the joy of their teammates, this forced the game into sudden death OT. Cameron Marks scored the game winning goal and his 10th of the game tying the Woodson Boys Lacrosse record of “most goals scored in a game” set by Bobby Solomon (WTW, 2018). Congratulations to Cameron! The final score was an exciting and entertaining Cavalier 12-11 victory.

The team will travel to West Potomac to wrap up their regular season tonight Tuesday, May 2nd. Good luck Cavs!!

Girls Lacrosse

The Woodson Girls JV and Varsity lacrosse teams won three post-spring break games. On April 18th, the Lady Cavs faced off against the South County Stallions. The JV Cavs bested the Stallions 10-3. The varsity squad won their game 18-5. The varsity Cavs experimented with zone defense against the Stallions. Despite some missed open cutters the strong Woodson rides and solid clears kept the game momentum in the Cavs’s favor. Woodson varsity scorers against South County were Genna Cooke (5 goals, 4 assists); Mia Zgangar (5 goals, 2 assists), Reese Cuviello (2 goals); Alex Walrath (2 goals, 1 assist); Arianna Rizzo (1 goal, 3 assists); Greer Dempster (1 goal, 1 assist); Milla Cronin (1 goal), and Amelia Ulcek (1 goal).

Woodson played away at Lake Braddock Bruins on April 25th. The JV Cavs beat the Bruins 14-2. The Varsity Cavs beat the Bruins 17-5. Woodson varsity scorers against Lake Braddock were Mia Zgangar (5 goals, 3 assists), Reese Cuviello (4 goals, 1 assist); Genna Cooke (2 goals); Alex Walrath (2 goals); Arianna Rizzo (1 goal, 4 assists); Amelia Ulcek (1 goal); Julia Lieberman (1 goal); Isabel Conklin (1 goal).

Finally, this past Friday the Cavs had a very wet and rainy game against the Alexandria City Titans. JV Cavs beat the Titans 14-2. The Varsity Cavs beat a much-improved Titans team 15-5. Scorers for Woodson Reese Cuviello (9 goals, 1 assist); Genna Cooke (3 goals); Alex Walrath (2 goals); Milla Cronin (1 goal); Mia Zgangar (5 assists), Eva Lennon (2 assists).

The Lady Cavs finish their regular season at home against the West Potomac Wolverines tonight!.

Varsity Softball

The Woodson Varsity Softball team lost two competitive back-to-back games last week first to South County on Monday and then at home to West Springfield 12-4 on Tuesday.

At South County, Woodson was led by Emma Fleming who went 3-4 at the plate and drove in 1 of Woodson’s 2 runs. Woodson was unable to get a clutch hit and take a lead as they stranded 9 base runners. Defensively, the Cavs were led by shortstop Syd Huffman who was involved in 5 outs and Sarah Banker who made 4 outs roaming centerfield.

Against West Springfield, the Cavs trailed 5-4 entering the final two innings but were unable to keep things close. The Woodson offensive attack was led by Penny Elliott and Sedona Adams who both contributed with a double and single. Elizabeth Schneider had a single, walk and drove in two runs. Fleming also drove in a run with a single.

FCPS NEWS & EVENTS DMV Learners Permit Tests at Woodson

Students will be eligible to test if they are 15 years 6 months or older on the following Tuesdays at 3:15pm in Room C108: May 23rd

Steps to complete the process: You must register in TWO places: ACE (for payment) and DMV for the test ticket.

Payment: First you must register through the ACE and pay $20.
Register for this test event at DMV Registration (Internet Explorer 9 or higher or Safari).
A customer number is not required, but if you have a DMV ID card you must enter the name, DOB and customer number exactly as it appears on your DMV ID card. Otherwise, enter your full legal name and date of birth and leave the customer number field blank.
Please provide a parent or student’s email to receive registration confirmation, test results, notification of changes to the date and time or cancellation of the test event.
Before taking the two part knowledge test, please STUDY the Driver’s Manual located on DMV’s website.

If students need FCPS laptop technical support at Woodson HS, please submit a ticket using the FCPS Parent/Student Tech Support Portal.

Wednesday - 2:55pm - 4:00pm (when late buses start)

Any other time you should try to make an appointment using a ticket from the Support Portal.

Late Buses Available Tuesdays and Wednesdays

Late buses are available Tuesdays and Wednesdays through spring. Students may stay after school to participate in clubs/activities and/or receive academic intervention with teachers.

Please note, students may NOT go across the street to the shopping center after school and then return for the late bus.

Staying Home When Sick

FCPS continues to require families to review the Daily Health Screening before sending students to school. The 5 Day Isolation Period will also continue for COVID positive students and staff.

NEW News 1. Report Cards Distributed

Report cards for 3rd Quarter were distributed to students during 7th period on Friday, April 28th.

If your student has an off-campus waiver or Academy class for 7th period, their report card is in the Student Services office for pickup.

2. Woodson 5K on April 29th

It’s time to register for the 13th Annual Woodson 5k Community Walk/Run on Saturday, April 29th at 8:30am at Woodson HS. All proceeds benefit Venicos Unidos which is an organization dedicated to providing children with safe and engaging after-school activities and helping students overcome academic achievement gaps.

Woodson students and staff can register for just $20 – only through MySchoolBucks.

Registration will take place up until race time. The event begins and ends outside of entrance #1. Every participant receives a Woodson 5K shirt.

If you want to mail the registration form directly to Woodson, use the form located on Schoology.

Virginia Delegate Eileen Filler-Corn visited Woodson to present the Boys Cross Country team with a resolution for winning the state championship.

3. Register for the Special Education Conference

The 18th annual FCPS Special Education Conference will take place on Saturday, April 29, from 9 a.m.-12:15 p.m. Registration is now open for this virtual event. Watch this short video for information about guest speakers and other important details. Registrants who would like language assistance may contact FCPS' Parent Information Phone Lines.

4. Spring 2023 Advanced Placement (AP) Testing

AP Testing begins Monday, May 1st. Students should report to Cafeteria B for morning exams no later than 7:45AM. Students should report for afternoon exams no later than 11:45AM to the Auditorium Lobby or Cav Hall. Students taking afternoon exams will not finish testing until 4:00PM. Please plan your transportation accommodations accordingly.

Only students with Woodson Parking Permits may park in school lots for AP testing.

5. Senior Sunset - Monday, May 1st

Seniors!

Bring your student ID on Monday, May 1st to the Girls & Boys Soccer Senior Night to get free ice cream provided by PTSO.

6. No Morning Attendance Calls

Morning attendance notifications will be suspended from May 1st through June 2nd.

Additionally, all attendance notifications will be suspended for elementary, middle, and high on the last day of school.

7. WTW Drama Presents - Little Shop of Horrors

8. Senior Prom Tickets and Guest Form

The Woodson Senior Prom, Enchanted Forest, will be held on Saturday, May 13th at Westwood Country Club (800 Maple Ave E, Vienna).

If you plan to bring a guest to prom who is not a Woodson student, please complete the Prom Guest Application and turn it in to your administrator by Wednesday, May 10th for approval.

Prom Guest Applications must be approved before a ticket can be purchased for the guest. Forms may be picked up from the main office.

10. Counselor’s Corner

Counselors have been busy supporting seniors with their post-secondary plans while working with all students to finish the year off on a positive note!

Senior students visited NOVA on April 24th and learned about the registration process and services offered while getting a tour of the campus.

We’re excited to continue to partner with parents/guardians in support of our students. Here’s to a great 4th quarter and a strong finish to the school year!

Help us celebrate our Woodson staff during Teacher Appreciation Week. The PTSO will be offering a Snack Wagon for our wonderful, hard-working teachers on Friday, May 12th.

We are looking for volunteers to donate items for that event. Non-perishables can be dropped off at the Woodson front office during the afternoon of May 11th. Perishable items (and late non-perishables) can be dropped off before 9:00 a.m. on May 12th.

Class of 2023 Senior Sunset Ice Cream Night

Seniors started the school year by having a senior sunrise, so what better way to end it than by having a senior sunset! The Class of 2023 is invited to Woodson’s Cunningham Stadium on Monday May 1st from 5pm-9pm to enjoy Paradise ice cream. This event is being sponsored by Woodson PTSO.

A huge congratulations to Woodson sophomore Rida Karim! She was elected by the countywide Student Advisory Council (SAC) to serve a one-year term as student representative to the Fairfax County School Board, beginning July 1, 2023. She will be the 53rd student representative to the School Board.

Host a French Student from July 6 to 28!

Sightseeing trips to Washington, D.C., originating at the Vienna Metro Station, will be provided on Tuesdays and Thursdays for the French students and any interested host siblings.

Taste of Annandale

The community is invited to the Taste of Annandale, a free family-friendly festival April 29, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., along Tom Davis Drive.

The Taste of Annandale features live performances, food trucks and restaurants, children’s programming and activities, a 5K race, a best-dressed pet contest, vendors, a chili cookoff, beer garden, and the police helicopter.

Sponsorships are available, as well as space for vendors and restaurants. The deadline has been extended to April 20. Learn more and download an application on the Taste of Annandale website.

Celebrate Your Plan Day will be on Monday, May 15th during all lunches (11:20 am - 1:20 pm) in the Auditorium Lobby. What is your plan after High School? Employment, College, Trade School, Military Service, Gap Year...? We want to celebrate you and all of the different post-secondary plans! Celebrate Your Plan Day (formerly known as Balloon Day) has been a Woodson tradition for many years. Seniors will post paper balloons, with their plans written on them, on the windows in the Auditorium Lobby where they will be on display until after graduation. We’ll also have some treats available for seniors as well. We can’t wait to celebrate our seniors!!!

CAVS SPORTS

Varsity Softball

The Woodson Varsity Softball team split its two games last week dropping a 6-5 out of district game at Hayfield on Monday then coming back on Tuesday to defeat Patriot District rival Fairfax 4-2.

At Hayfield, Woodson was led by Penny Elliott who went 3-3 including a 3-run homer to centerfield.

Against Fairfax, Woodson pitcher Claire Warden earned a complete game victory, her third win of the season. Warden allowed 6 hits and struck out 3 Lions. Warden was helped in the field defensively by shortstop Sarah Banker who was responsible for 7 outs along with1 assist. Catcher Elizabeth Schneider also threw out a Fairfax runner stealing 2nd base. The bat of Elliott drove in 2 runs with a sacrifice fly in the first inning and a double to center in the 3rd. Sam Klein also drove in a run with a line drive single to right in the first. Emma Fleming had a double and triple and scored a run. Schneider also chipped in with a line drive double to left field.

Varsity Baseball

The Woodson Varsity baseball team returned from spring break with a game against West Potomac. The host Wolverines used three hits, including a 2-run homer run in the 6th to score three and edge out to a 5-4 advantage. The Cavaliers rallied in the 7th to tie and send the game into extra innings; after a walk to Perks, a single by Santamauro, and Senior Co-Captain A.J. Viccora reaching base on an error. Senior Co-Captain Ryan Ramirez came in to pitch and held the Wolverines down for a couple of innings, but they used a single, a hit-batsman and a bunt single to score the winning run in the 8th inning.

Woodson next hosted the Robinson Rams. Junior Nate Moore pitched well early for Woodson, striking out three and yielding just two hits and two runs in three innings. The Cavaliers took the lead in the 4th using a Santamauro single, a booming double off the bat of Smallwood and a Moore single, for a 3-2 edge. But the Robinson bats proved to be too much for Woodson as the Rams scored five runs in the 5th, and five in the 7th en route to a 12-3 win.

Woodson then hosted the cross-city rival Fairfax Lions. Though down 8-5 late in the game, Woodson was not out. Smallwood had a good outing, giving up just three earned runs and striking out five in a little over five innings of work. Junior Sam Koutsouftikis got the final two outs of the 6th, while Senior Scott Durbin worked a scoreless 7th to keep Woodson close.

The Cavaliers launched a rally in the last half of the 7th and final inning. Smallwood reached on an error, Viccora walked, and Moore reached on an error to load the bases. Gordon hit a one-out single to bring Woodson within two, and Conklin followed with his own single to tie things at eight. After an intentional walk loaded the bases again, Santamauro grounded one through the right side to drive in the winning run in the 9-8 walk-off victory. Santamauro led the way for the Woodson hitters with three hits and four runs-batted in, while Conklin added three hits and two RBIs, and Gordon had two hits and two RBIs.

Woodson was back at it a few days later when they hit the road to take on the South County Stallions. Ramirez came in relief for the Cavaliers in the 2nd and was fantastic. He used a beautiful pick-off move in the 2nd to quell one rally, and retired 10 of the first 12 hitters that he faced.

The Cavaliers offense was paced by Santamauro and Perks who had two hits apiece. Ramirez was masterful in his five innings of work, striking out three and yielding no hits to South County.

The Stallions got two aboard in the 6th, but Ramirez managed to steer out of further trouble. Woodson, however, was unable to score the equalizing run and fell 2-1 for its sixth 1-run loss of the season, and its fourth in the Patriot District.

Fairfax County Public Schools provides [email protected] (weCare), an emergency care information system, to parents/caregivers who have registered for their own parent account. weCare helps manage emergency medical information by allowing parents to enter and update their children’s medical data online at their convenience. 2023 Congressional Art Competition

Congressman Gerry Connolly is hosting this art competition to give students in our district the opportunity to showcase their artistic talent and creativity. Students do not need to create a new piece of art specifically for this competition – they are welcome to submit any piece from their portfolio. Past years’ competitions have included paintings, photographs, drawings, digital art, and more.

Each student can submit a maximum of two pieces. Artwork does not have to be original for this competition, but it cannot have been submitted to our competition previously. Submissions can be dropped off at my District Office in Fairfax City.

Entries are due Monday, May 1, 2023.

All entries will be displayed at the Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton, Virginia. The exhibit will be open to the public from May 5, 2023 to May 21, 2023.

The winning piece will be displayed at the U.S. Capitol for one year, the second-place entry will be exhibited at the Workhouse Arts Gallery for a year, and with the permission of the artists, additional high-ranking pieces will be displayed in my Capitol Hill and district office.

DMV Learners Permit Tests at Woodson

Students will be eligible to test if they are 15 years 6 months or older on the following Tuesdays at 3:15pm in Room C108: May 23rd

Steps to complete the process: You must register in TWO places: ACE (for payment) and DMV for the test ticket.

Payment: First you must register through the ACE and pay $20.
Register for this test event at DMV Registration (Internet Explorer 9 or higher or Safari).
A customer number is not required, but if you have a DMV ID card you must enter the name, DOB and customer number exactly as it appears on your DMV ID card. Otherwise, enter your full legal name and date of birth and leave the customer number field blank.
Please provide a parent or student’s email to receive registration confirmation, test results, notification of changes to the date and time or cancellation of the test event.
Before taking the two part knowledge test, please STUDY the Driver’s Manual located on DMV’s website.

Attendance is critical to student success in the classroom.

Laptop Tech Support Hours

If students need FCPS laptop technical support at Woodson HS, please submit a ticket using the FCPS Parent/Student Tech Support Portal.

Our walk-in hours in Room A114 are:

Odd Days during Learning Seminar
Monday - 7:45am - 8:10am
Wednesday - 2:55pm - 4:00pm (when late buses start)

Any other time you should try to make an appointment using a ticket from the Support Portal.

Late Buses Available Tuesdays and Wednesdays

Late buses are available Tuesdays and Wednesdays through spring. Students may stay after school to participate in clubs/activities and/or receive academic intervention with teachers.

Please note, students may NOT go across the street to the shopping center after school and then return for the late bus.

Staying Home When Sick

FCPS continues to require families to review the Daily Health Screening before sending students to school. The 5 Day Isolation Period will also continue for COVID positive students and staff.
