Message from Mr. Greata

It was wonderful to see all our students back in the building today! There’s nothing quite like the energy of a high school buzzing with our student body. While it’s a bit belated, I want to wish you all a very Happy New Year!

With the recent snow days, there isn’t too much to share, but I’d like to provide some important updates to help us all get reoriented to the school year.

We are now beginning to prepare for course registrations for the upcoming school year. Students and families will soon receive information about our course catalog. Despite the weather disruptions, we’re moving forward with our Curriculum Night on Wednesday, January 15th, at 6:00 p.m. If you’re a parent or guardian of a rising 9th, 10th, 11th, or 12th grader, we encourage you to attend this informative event. We also recommend reviewing our Academic Advising wepbage.

Important January Dates
Here are some key dates to keep in mind for the rest of the month:

  • Monday, January 20: School closed for MLK Day and Inauguration Day.
  • Tuesday, January 28: End of the 2nd quarter.
  • Wednesday, January 29: Teacher Workday - no school for students.

Congratulations to all our athletes who made All-State teams for fall sports! We are incredibly proud of your hard work and accomplishments.

  • Han Lee - All-State Boys Golf 1st Team and 2nd Team All Met
  • Keira Arenholz - All-State Girls Cross Country 1st Team
  • Sofie Ferrell - All-State Girls Volleyball 2nd Team
  • Kelby Lennen - All-State Field Hockey 1st Team
  • Siena Niedrick - All-State Field Hockey 2nd Team

Join us tonight to support our boys' basketball team at home as they face Lake Braddock. Then, tomorrow, come cheer on the girls' wrestling team at Lewis, starting at 10 a.m. Let’s show our school spirit!

Stay warm, have a great weekend, and we look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events.

Warm regards,

Kevin Greata
Principal

View our Student and Group Recognition webpage!

A huge thank you to all our custodians who worked so hard this week to make sure our school was safe for students and staff to return to! Virtual PTSO Meeting

Save the Date: The January virtual PTSO meeting will be next Tuesday, January 14th at 7:00pm

Curriculum Night

Mark your calendars for our annual Curriculum Night this Wednesday, January 15, from 6:00-8:00pm. At this open house style event, we will have teachers and staff from each of our academic departments and FCPS academy programs available to answer any questions you may have regarding course options for next year. Additionally, there will be a presentation for rising 9th grade students and families in the auditorium from 6:00-6:45 where we will share information about the transition to high school, in addition to information and resources regarding course selection.

To prepare for Academic Advising please bookmark our Academic Advising wepbage! This page will be updated throughout the Academic Advising Window (January-March).

2nd Quarter Ends Tuesday, January 28th

Tuesday, January 28, is the last day of the second quarter. See the complete school year calendar.

Based on community feedback from the first quarter closure, FCPS revisited the scheduled dates for closing the Gradebook and Report Card modules in the SIS ParentVUE and StudentVUE apps.

Moving forward, the app will close in alignment with the actual quarter-end dates. This change will allow students and families to view their assignments and grades until the last day of the quarter. Gradebook will be closed for the second quarter from Tuesday, January 28, 4 p.m. to Tuesday, February 4, 6 a.m.

Message from Mr. Greata

The week before winter break is always a special time at Carter G. Woodson High School. It’s a week filled with school spirit, celebrations, and recognition of the outstanding work of our students and staff. As always, Mrs. Glover helped take our spirit week to the next level—be sure to check out the picture of her, along with Mrs. Esposito, Mrs. O’Brien, and Mrs. Pugnetti below. Don’t forget to visit Instagram to see highlights from our student-staff Dance-Off at the pep rally—you’ll be impressed.

During the pep rally, we were thrilled to recognize two staff members as Carter G. Woodson Pyramid winners for FCPS Outstanding Employees. Congratulations to:

  • Lauren Kinne for receiving the Outstanding Teacher Pyramid Award.
  • Kathy Martin for receiving the Outstanding School Leader Pyramid Award.

Both are well-deserved honors—congratulations!

In athletics, a big shoutout to our undefeated Esports Rocket League team, with an incredible 44 wins this season! They’ve earned their third consecutive championship title. Congratulations to Connor Lane, Andrew Wong, Greysen Berg, and their coaches Mike Kuykendall and Johnny Shu!

We also announced our new head football coach, Joe McBride, who had the chance to meet our players this past Thursday. We’re excited to see him working with the team this spring during Green Days.

On Saturday, I had the pleasure of attending the Madison Mashup Girls Wrestling Tournament. The energy in the room was indescribable, with over 200 wrestlers competing fiercely. Even our Superintendent, Dr. Reid, joined us to support this blossoming sport in FCPS. We are incredibly proud of our wrestlers: Dani Hyder (1st place), Serena Mancuso (2nd place), Nimmar Al-Qudwa Al-Hussieni (2nd place)

Be sure to come out for their next match on January 11th at Lewis High School, starting at 8:00 AM. We also have our annual Cav Classic tournament this Saturday starting at 9:00 AM in our main gym.

I also want to extend a heartfelt thank you to our incredible Performing Arts teachers, Aaron Morgan, Amy Moir, Lonnie Bickel, Devyn Wilcox, and Chris Rushing, who put on another amazing performance this past Tuesday. The talent at our school is simply outstanding, and it’s clear our teachers bring out the best in our students. Thank you for your hard work and dedication!

Below is some important Information for the Winter Break:
  • Administrative Offices: Woodson’s Administrative Offices will be open by appointment only from Monday, December 23rd, through Friday, January 3rd. Please contact your student’s administrator if something arises.
  • Homework Policy: No homework should be assigned over the break, and no major assignments should be due during the first two days after the break.
  • FCPS Closures: All FCPS Administrative Offices and School Buildings will be closed on December 24th, December 25th, and January 1st.
  • Emergency Contacts: For emergencies or security concerns over the winter break, please contact FCPS School Security at 571-423-2000.

When we return, January will kick off with Academic Advising. Save the date for Curriculum Night on Wednesday, January 15th, from 6:00–8:00 PM. More detailed information will be shared when we return.

To those who celebrate, Merry Christmas and Happy Chanukah, and to everyone, we wish you a wonderful and restful winter break.

See you in 2025!

Message from Mr. Greata

It has been a spirited and exciting week here at Carter G. Woodson High School, and the festivities will continue as we count down to winter break! Be sure to check out the Spirit Week schedule below and take a screenshot to keep track of the fun. Let’s fill our hallways and classrooms with holiday cheer!

Adding to the festive spirit was our staff holiday party earlier this week. I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the families who generously donated gift cards for our staff. The overwhelming response to our request demonstrates how fortunate we are to have such a supportive community—thank you! Our community’s generosity was also extended to those in need, with the PTSO raising more than $4,000 in gift cards to support CG Woodson families during the holiday season.

This week, our Performing Arts Department delivered breathtaking performances at both the band and chorus concerts. We were honored to have Dr. Reid attend the chorus concert, where she shared glowing congratulations for our students and choir director, Amy Moir, for their outstanding performance.

The band's concert was equally spectacular, thanks to the preparation by directors Aaron Morgan and Helen Landers. Mr. Morgan highlighted the incredible dedication of our Wind Ensemble, which has performed six times this year, and performed pieces with very little preparation time due to the intense schedule. You would never know it from their amazing performance!

We are so proud of all our talented students and love sharing their gifts with our community. If you missed these wonderful events, don’t worry—all our musical groups will showcase their talents next Tuesday, December 17th. We hope to see you there!

This past Wednesday, we held our Power of Words Community Meeting, where we reviewed student-led initiatives and upcoming lessons for all students addressing hate speech, along with a conversation with community members. Student leaders Rida Karim and Courtney Butts shone brightly, demonstrating their passion and leadership as they represented a larger group of dedicated peers working tirelessly to make Carter G. Woodson a better place.

To ensure everyone has a chance to hear about these important efforts, we’ll host a virtual community meeting in January to share more about our plans and goals. We’re so proud of this work and encourage as many people as possible to participate!

Congratulations to Barrett Pullen for breaking the school’s shot put record, surpassing the 1983 benchmark by over two feet—an incredible achievement! We’re equally proud of Nathaniel Grannis, who represented Carter G. Woodson High School on the international stage at the  World Aquatics Junior Diving Championships in Brazil. Simply amazing!

Closer to home, Lily Eng and Leah James, founding members of our March for Our Lives Club, were recently interviewed by Superintendent Reid. Their important message on gun storage safety and the impact of gun violence on students will be shared soon—stay tuned for the video!

We have a busy weekend ahead with basketball at home tonight, as well as swimming and wrestling events tomorrow. For game times and details, visit woodsonsports.com.

Have a fantastic weekend, and thank you for being part of the Carter G. Woodson High School community!

Curriculum Night

Mark your calendars for our annual Curriculum Night on Wednesday, January 15, from 6:00-8:00pm.

Counselor Corner

Academic Advising is right around the corner! Please visit our Academic Advising Padlet for information on Academy Open Houses (starting in January!), graduation requirements, and new class offerings. In addition, our classroom lessons are posted on the respective grade-level Student Services padlet. Also, please bookmark the Woodson Academic Advising website…your home for everything related to academic advising.

As a reminder, we have a Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist, Sean McMahon, who is available to speak with students about prevention and support resources. He is available on Tuesdays at Woodson.

Wellness Tip: students can access brain breaks and reduce stress by accessing our Woodson Wellness site and locate other wellness resources on our Social/Emotional Wellness & Support padlet.

Executive Functioning Tip: We often encourage students to initiate conversations with teachers and peers to share their needs as learners and school citizens. This is a critical skill for learning to collaborate with others. Families can help students practice and  learn self-advocacy skills.

Seniors: be mindful of upcoming January deadlines. Transcript requests for January deadlines were due December 9th, so please turn in your transcript release form ASAP if you have not done so already.

Our Student Services department wishes all of our families a very happy holiday season!

Course Selection Begins in January

Beginning in January 2025, students will meet with their counselors to discuss course selection for next year. Families are encouraged to actively participate in this important process.

As students choose courses, it is important to remind them to consider the following:

  • Current academic strengths and habits.
  • Graduation requirements.
  • Interests and career and postsecondary goals.
  • Personal well-being.
  • Extracurricular activities and other commitments that may impact students’ time and energy.

School-life balance is an important consideration as students strive for academic and personal success. Families are welcome to contact their student’s school counselor with questions.

Students test electrical conductivity to determine bond types.

🗓️ Save the Date: Academy Open Houses Begin in January!

FCPS high school academies will hold open houses for interested students beginning in January.

A high school academy is a center within a high school that offers advanced technical and specialized courses to prepare students for postsecondary education and/or career fields. Students enrolling in academy elective courses will be provided with opportunities to participate in a variety of career experiences including shadowing, mentoring, or internships with local businesses.

Message from Mr. Greata

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving filled with family, relaxation, and perhaps a little recreation. As we embrace the season of giving and gratitude, I want to express our heartfelt thanks to our PTSO for their unwavering support of our school. This week, we are especially grateful for the absolutely wonderful luncheon they provided for our staff this past Thursday—it was a true treat!

This week, we also recognized our Outstanding Employee Award nominees, and I want to thank all the staff, students, and parents who took the time to submit nominations. We are fortunate to have so many deserving staff members at our school, and it was thrilling to receive a total of 135 nominations this year, including over 55 individual teacher nominations! We celebrated these nominees this week, and I am proud to announce the winners who will move forward to represent our school at the pyramid level:

  • Outstanding Teacher: Lauren Kinne
  • Outstanding New teacher: Emily Bankson
  • Outstanding School-Based Professional Employee: Rick Mey
  • Outstanding School-Based Operational Employee: Darlene Sheppard
  • Outstanding School-Based Leader: Kathy Martin

Congratulations to these exceptional staff members!

‘Tis the season for holiday performances! We kicked off the festivities this week with our annual Tunes for Tots, which delighted hundreds of Pre-K children in our community. In addition, our orchestras truly “sleighed it” at their holiday concert last night, showcasing their incredible talent and hard work. The celebrations continue, and we’d love for you to join us for our Chorus Winter Concert December 10th, Band Winter Concert December 12th, and our Performing Arts Winter Showcase December 17th.

I’d also like to invite you to our Community Meeting next Wednesday, December 11, at 6:30 PM, as we continue the important discussion we began last spring. During this meeting, we will share updates on our efforts to support all students and address instances of hate speech and racial slurs at our school. Highlights of the evening include an overview of new programming for students, a panel discussion featuring our students, and, most importantly, time to hear from you—our community. Your input is invaluable as we work together to build a strong, cohesive culture at Carter G. Woodson High School. We look forward to seeing you there.

Lastly, we’re excited to announce that the annual Red Jenkins Basketball Tournament is already underway! The girls' team kicked off the tournament last night winning their game, and the boys' team plays tonight at 7:30. Both teams will be in action tomorrow with girls taking on Potomac at 2:45 and boys playing against Yorktown at 7:00. We hope to see you at the games as we cheer on our athletes. For updates on this and all other sporting events, visit woodsonsports.com.

Thank you again to our PTSO for the delightful holiday luncheon—it truly made our week special.

The PTSO invites all Woodson families to celebrate and recognize our wonderful teachers and staff this holiday season. Please take time throughout the school year, and especially now in the holiday season, to recognize and thank the educators and support professionals that work with our children. Simple notes of appreciation, emails of gratitude and letters in support of teachers, counselors, principal, and/or support staff have enormous, meaningful impact.

Additionally, Woodson PTSO is collecting gift cards to raffle at the Annual Holiday Party for the Teachers and Staff.  Parents, families, and students are invited to send in donated gift cards to the main office addressed to Alexa Pugnetti.

We kindly ask that all donations are dropped off to the main office by Noon on Monday, December 9th.

2025-26 FAFSA Form Now Available

The 2025-26 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is now available. Any college-bound high school senior — regardless of income — who wants to be considered for federal, state, and school financial aid programs should complete a FAFSA form.

Parents and caregivers are encouraged to work with their children to complete the FAFSA as early as possible. Check each college’s financial aid office webpage for deadlines and financial aid forms. Then, create an account, if you have not already done so, and fill out the FAFSA.

The Virginia Alternative State Aid (VASA) application will be available in late January for students who are unable to complete the FAFSA. To help determine which aid option is right for you, visit the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia website.

Get Help Filling out FAFSA From College Access Fairfax

Over the next few months, College Access Fairfax will be offering several programs on completing the FAFSA/VASA and finding and applying for scholarships. Get information on these programs and how to access them on the College Access Fairfax website.

In addition, College Access Fairfax staff are available for virtual one-on-one help sessions to complete the FAFSA/VASA. To request an appointment, families should email [email protected].

Faculty and Staff nominate students that have been seen doing an act of kindness, which is reflective of our school’s mission of creating a healthy environment of mutual respectresponsibilityequity, and inclusion.

Way to go, Cavs!

Counselor Corner

Student Services visited 9th grade World History classes this week to deliver a lesson on Academic Advising, graduation requirements, and how to calculate their GPA. This was the third lesson counselors have presented to 9th graders this fall through their World History classes as we continue to help them transition fully into high school. We have really enjoyed connecting with our freshmen more regularly!

We will be presenting the Signs of Suicide (SOS) lesson to 11th graders on Monday, December 9th. Juniors will learn how to identify symptoms of depression in themselves and others, and to discern what to do if they are concerned about suicidal thinking or self-harm regarding themselves or a friend. We encourage all families to review our Social/Emotional Padlet which offers emergency information and resources for mental health support. It also links to our Woodson Wellness google site for students to use when they need brain breaks and stress relief.

Student Services, in collaboration with our World Languages department, administered the World Language Credit By Exam (WLCBE) to approximately students on November 22. You can find out more about the WLCBE here.

The 2025-26 FAFSA is now open! We encourage students to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Here are some resources from the U.S. Department of Education to help complete the 2025-2026 FAFSA: Pro Tips for the 2025-26 FAFSA, announcements, and FAFSA help.

Academic Advising Reminders! Please have students mark their calendars for the Course Information Fair lesson for 9th-11th grade students on January 8th during 3rd period Returns and the Course Information Fair for 9th-11th graders on January 10th during both Returns. Seniors will have a class meeting in the auditorium during Returns on January 10th. Lastly, please note that Curriculum Night, for rising 9th-12th graders is on January 15th from 6:00-8:00pm in the Woodson cafeterias and Auditorium.

Thank you, PTSO, for planning a holiday luncheon for our teachers and staff.  Your continued support of our school is truly appreciated!

Message from Mr. Greata

As we transition from fall into winter, with winter sports underway, the conclusion of our fall play, and the start of the second quarter, it’s a perfect time to reflect on the remarkable achievements of our students. Recently, I spoke with a graduate who shared how, in some ways, high school felt even more challenging than college. Reflecting on the rigorous schedules our students manage—especially those actively involved in extracurriculars—I'm continually amazed by their dedication to excelling academically and pursuing their passions. I am equally grateful for the unwavering support they receive from both their families and our incredible staff.

Before we fully wrap up the fall season, we have one final highlight to celebrate. Today, our band will travel to Norfolk to perform at the Virginia Music Educators Association (VMEA) conference. This is a tremendous honor for our school and community. Under the guidance of our talented directors, Aaron Morgan and Helen Landers, our musicians have worked tirelessly to prepare for this prestigious event. Their performance will feature 7 pieces, showcasing the breadth of their talent. To our band students: break a leg, and thank you for making us proud!

As we approach Thanksgiving break, I want to remind everyone of our expectations around assignments and assessments. While students may need to work on long-term projects or catch up on assignments, no short-term assignments should be due on the first two days back after break (December 2 and 3). Additionally, teachers will not assign work on November 25 or 26 that would be due immediately after the break, and teachers will not schedule major assessments during those first days back.

Thanksgiving break begins next Wednesday, November 27, and runs through Friday, November 29. The school and offices will be closed during this time. Please note that we will not send out a Woodson Weekly next week; it will resume on Friday, December 6.

Looking ahead to December, I encourage you to mark your calendars for an important event: on Wednesday, December 11, from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM, we will hold a community conversation about our equity efforts and our school-wide goal of fostering a stronger sense of belonging among our students. Please mark your calendars!

On behalf of the faculty and staff at Woodson High School, I wish you and your family a wonderful weekend and a joyful Thanksgiving holiday.

Kevin Greata
Principal

Administration and other staff members stepped in to help our cafeteria staff serve Thanksgiving lunch this week.
A core memory for all of us from our school days!

Thanksgiving Break

Schools and offices will be closed Wednesday, November 27, through Friday, November 29.

Students and staff return on Monday, December 2 (Even Day Schedule).

The Woodson Weekly will also be taking a break. The next issue will be sent on Friday, December 6th.

Help Us Thank Woodson Teachers and Staff

The PTSO invites all Woodson families to celebrate and recognize our wonderful teachers and staff this holiday season.

High School isn’t the same as elementary school where we had organized gift-giving and room parents. Please take time throughout the school year, and especially now in the holiday season, to recognize and thank the educators and support professionals that work with our children. Simple notes of appreciation, emails of gratitude and letters in support of teachers, counselors, principal, and/or support staff have enormous, meaningful impact.

Additionally, Woodson PTSO is collecting gift cards to raffle at the Annual Holiday Party for the Teachers and Staff on Monday, December 9th.  Parents, families, and students are invited to send in donated gift cards to the main office addressed to Alexa Pugnetti.

We kindly ask that we receive all donations by Friday, December 6th.

For more information please contact the main office at 703-503-4600.

Happy National Substitute Educators Day to all of the wonderful subs within FCPS! Our students would not be able to continue their learning without the help from you.

On Monday, we kicked off the week with lunch for our Woodson substitutes. We are so appreciative of their help and support each and every day.

Attendance For Thanksgiving Week

It is imperative that you let our Attendance Office know as soon as possible for any early dismissals that will occur next week. Remember, early dismissals cannot be submitted through ParentVUE, only Full Day Absences can be submitted there.

If your student will need an early dismissal, you must either leave a voicemail on our attendance line (please provide us with more than a 30 minute heads up!), or have the student bring in a note directly to the attendance office.

703-503-4800

Director of Student Services, Mr. Peters, takes a turn at serving Thanksgiving lunch to our students.

Kiss and Ride Reminder

With the second quarter starting, we wanted to remind students and parents about our parking and Kiss and Ride procedures. Please read the following procedures indicated by the map below:

1 - Bus and staff entrance: This is the first entrance off Whitacre Road into the Woodson property.

2 - Senior parking lot: The second entrance off Whitacre Road into the Senior lot is for Senior student parking only.

3 - Whitacre Road Kiss and Ride: The third entrance off Whitacre Road is the entrance to the Kiss and Ride loop by the tennis courts. Drop off students BEFORE 8AM at Door 9, not before (only in front of) Door 9 for safety reasons.

4 - Junior parking lot: The last entrance off Whitacre Road, which is also the stadium entrance. When looking at the stadium, the Junior lot is on the left.

5 - Pickett Road Kiss and Ride: If you are coming to Woodson from 236, use the Pickett Road entrance, NOT Whitacre Rd. This will allow you to drop your child(ren) off at Door 2. Only staff can access the front lot where Kiss and Ride forms from Whitacre Road.

DO NOT park at the shopping center across the street; they will tow your car

Impact Aid Forms

Last call for Impact Aid Forms!

All families should complete a Federal Impact Aid Survey as soon as possible. The form is available in ParentVUE under Online Packets (in the upper right corner after logging in). Students that had not yet completed the online submission as of last week were given paper copies in their 4th period Return. Each student needs to submit only one version of the form (electronic or paper printed copy).

Why submit this form? Information from this survey resulted in more than $4 million in funding last year from the U.S. Department of Education. The funds support all Fairfax County public schools and centers. Visit the Federal Impact Aid Survey page to learn more.

Woodson Band will be putting on their annual Holiday Tunes for Tots on December 4th and December 5th, both at 10am in the Main Gym. Tickets are $5 per person and can be purchased at the door.

Boundary Review Community Meetings

Community meetings regarding FCPS' division wide boundary review will take place in each of the division's six regions. The Region 5 meeting will take place on Monday, December 2, 6:30-8 p.m., at Westfield High School Cafeteria. Please use the link above to register.

If you are unable to attend our Region 5 meeting, you may attend another. All meetings will be in person and will follow the same format. Language interpretation will be available. Visit the Comprehensive School Boundary Review webpage for more information.

Message from Mr. Greata

Despite a shorter week, it has been hopping here at Carter G. Woodson High School. We had lots of community visitors and celebrations that I am excited to share with you!

As part of our ongoing recognition of veterans and military connected families, we were thrilled to host members of our military community for our Military Appreciation Breakfast this morning. A heartfelt thank you to all our veterans who selflessly serve our nation. And, thank you to Alaina Andersen, Debbie Glover, Lizzie Walter, Adrienne Wood, and Josh Peters for planning not only this event, but also our Student Services Advisory Council event this week.

Each and everyday, we work alongside some incredible professionals that are dedicated to the well-being and education of our students. To recognize National School Psychologists Week, we want to extend our gratitude to our incredible school psychologists, Ryan Dickerson, Risha Lamba, and Jennifer Zabel, who are always going above and beyond!

This week, we celebrated numerous student accomplishments, including 11 student-athletes who participated in our Fall College Commitment Ceremony. We know that these scholar-athletes will continue to excel academically and athletically at the collegiate level, and we couldn’t be prouder!

Congratulations to choir members Sarah Hymans, Charlotte Reymann, Serena Mancuso, Joaquin Najar, and alternate Emily Hudders, who were selected to represent Carter G. Woodson High School at the Virginia Senior Honor Chorus! These talented singers will join other select students in Norfolk from November 21-23 under the direction of Grammy Award-winning conductor Dr. Jeffrey Redding.

Additionally, we welcomed State Senator Marsden, Delegate Laura Jane Cohen, and School Board Member Rachna Sizemore Heizer to our school to discuss school needs and visit some of our outstanding classrooms. I’m proud of our students, who seized the opportunity to ask questions and share insights, representing our community exceptionally well.

A few important reminders:

  • Please check the detailed information below regarding the upcoming FCPS division-wide boundary review, which will take place across all six divisions. We hope to see you at the Region 5 meeting on December 2 at Westfield High School from 6:30 PM to 8 PM.
  • Join us next Wednesday as we celebrate National Family Engagement Month with a morning coffee from 7:00-7:45 AM or an evening session from 6:00-7:00 PM in the library for cookies and conversation.
  • As winter approaches, please remember our building opens at 7:30 AM. We appreciate you keeping this in mind when dropping students off, especially as temperatures drop.

This weekend, if you haven’t attended a performance of Lear yet, I highly encourage you to see a performance! Our thespians’ talents shine, through their technical expertise, acting skill, singing prowess, and costume design. Also, good luck to our cross-country team competing at States this weekend at The Oatlands!

Attendance For Thanksgiving Week

Looking ahead to the holiday season, if missing school is unavoidable, please speak with your child’s teachers in advance to create a plan for making up missed work.

It is also imperative that you let our Attendance Office know as soon as possible for any early dismissals.

Join Mr. Greata on Wednesday, November 20th for his Family Engagement Month event: Coffee, Cookies & Conversation

There will be two sessions to choose from:
7:00am-7:45am or 6:00pm-7:00pm

Hope to see you there!

Impact Aid Forms

All families should complete a Federal Impact Aid Survey as soon as possible. The form is available in ParentVUE under Online Packets (in the upper right corner after logging in).

Please complete the form for each school-aged child in your household. Information from this survey resulted in more than $4 million in funding last year from the U.S. Department of Education. The funds support all Fairfax County public schools and centers. Visit the Federal Impact Aid Survey page to learn more.

Register for ParentVUE

Learn how to activate your ParentVUE account, so you can easily submit your survey and have access to other helpful information about your child.

Counselor Corner

School counselors have been busy so far as we’ve begun the second quarter! We hosted our fall Advisory Council meeting on Nov 14 and shared program highlights with key stakeholders including students, parents, and faculty. Next week on Monday, Nov 18, we will present an important program to our 9th grade students called Signs of Suicide (SOS). This program discusses suicide awareness and prevention, and what to do if you are concerned about yourself or others.

Additionally, counselors have already written 335 letters of recommendation in support of our seniors applying to colleges, and expect to continue submitting transcripts and documents, and writing letters of recommendation, through January. Seniors, please be aware of deadlines to ensure that your documents are submitted on time. Additionally, if you would like a letter of recommendation from your counselor, we require 15 school days ahead of your deadline. Complete the google form before submitting your transcript request form and come get help before school any Wednesday in the College & Career Center. We will again host a college application support workshop on Nov 22 during lunches - no appointment needed!

Check out the Woodson school wide calendar for upcoming events (please bookmark it and refer to it regularly). You can also filter the calendar to view College & Career Center and Student Services events specifically, for example: NOVA information sessions during lunches, NACAC Virtual College Fair, Scholarship 101 Virtual Session, Junior Information Night (coming up on December 4!), and Military Recruiter visits during lunches.

Speaking of calendars, all 9th, 10th, and 11th grade parents, please mark your calendars for our annual Curriculum Night! This year’s event will be held on January 15 from 6:00-8:00pm in the Woodson Cafeterias and Auditorium. Teachers and staff from all our academic departments will be present at this event, which helps kicks off the academic advising season and provides information to students and parents to ensure informed decisions are made regarding course selection for next school year. Additional information and details will be shared in the coming days.

Three shows remaining!

Student Leadership created a banner of staff members at Woodson that are veterans.

Thank you to all of our faculty, staff, and community members who have served and continue to serve our community and nation!

Message from Mr. Greata

This Monday, November 11, marks Veterans Day. We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of our faculty, staff, and community members who have served and continue to serve our community and nation. Your service and dedication are the foundation of our safety and the freedoms we cherish. We are truly grateful for all that you do.

With the large number of military-connected families and federally employed families in our community, given our proximity to the nation’s capital, the funds received through the Impact Aid form have played an essential role in Fairfax County Public Schools' funding for decades. This year, the process has transitioned to an online format via ParentVUE. Unfortunately, our completion rate is lower than in previous years, likely due to this change. If you have not yet completed the Impact Aid Form, it can be found on ParentVUE. Your cooperation is crucial, and we appreciate your assistance in providing this important information. Directions for completing the form are included below.

November is National Family Engagement Month, and in celebration, we will be hosting a family coffee on the morning of Wednesday, November 20. For those unable to attend in the morning, we will also hold an evening gathering at 6 PM that same day. More information will be shared in next week’s newsletter, so please mark your calendars. We look forward to seeing you there!

We have a lot of exciting athletic news as playoffs are in full swing! Be sure to visit our student recognition page to see the athletes who have been selected for all district and regional teams - congratulations to them all! Our field hockey team will be competing in the state tournament on Tuesday, November 12, at Glen Allen High School. Additionally, our girls' cross country team is heading to the state meet on Saturday, November 16, at The Oatlands. For more details on these events and winter sports tryouts, which begin on Monday, November 11, please visit the Woodson athletics website.

As a reminder, Monday, November 11, is a student holiday. We hope you and your families enjoy the extended weekend. Tonight, we will be at West Springfield for the final football game of the season, and we hope to see everyone there supporting and cheering on our Cavaliers. It’s a Flannel Out!

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!

Kevin Greata
Principal

1st Quarter Report Cards

We are no longer sending home quarterly printed report cards, as they are available in your ParentVUE account. Once logged in, you can view the posted report card located under "Documents". Report cards will be posted by November 13th.

Please remember that gradebooks in ParentVUE are still closed until 6am November 12th while 1st quarter grades are being finalized.

Woodson Girls Cross Country team advances to the VHSL State meet. Good Luck, Cavaliers!

Thank you, Coach Ted Plunkett, for the picture.

Winter Sports Tryouts

Winter Sports Tryouts will start on Monday, November 11th. Please note this is Veterans Day and there is no school for students..

In order for an athlete to be eligible to participate in tryouts, they must have Activity Registration submitted online and also have a VHSL Sports Physical turned in to our Athletic Office, prior to November 11th.

Questions? Visit our Athletic Website or have your student stop by the Activities Office C103.

Last Chance to Submit Outstanding Award Nominations

Completing this form for each school-aged child in every household is important. Information from this survey resulted in more than $4 million in funding last year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

For more information, please watch this video on Impact Aid and visit the Federal Impact Aid Survey page.

Need to Register for ParentVUE?

IEP Palooza and Community Resource Fair

Parents/caregivers, school staff, and students over the age of 14 are invited to attend an interactive event celebrating the individualized education program (IEP) process. The IEP Palooza and Community Resource Fair will take place on Saturday, November 16, 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m., at Jackson Middle School.

The event is sponsored by Fairfax County Special Education Parent Teacher Association (SEPTA). Activities include simulated IEP meetings, break-out sessions on the various parts of an IEP, and a resource fair to learn more about community supports. Register in advance.

Services for Hearing-Impaired and Visually-Impaired Students

Students with sensory disabilities require specialized services and support to access instruction that is typically presented visually and auditorily (by means of hearing). FCPS provides educational services to students who are deaf, hearing-impaired, or visually impaired. They are supported in various settings, including at their school or through itinerant specialists who travel to different schools to work with students, rather than being based in a single school. Learn more about Services for Students Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing and Services for Students Who Are Blind or Visually Impaired.

Visit the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) website for Resources for Serving Students with Sensory Disabilities.

Cav Kudos ceremony attendees on Friday. Way to go, Cavaliers!

Tutoring Resources for Families

Is your family looking for resources to help support your child’s academic success? FCPS’ Family Resource Center (FRC) maintains a list of district employees who hold a valid Virginia teaching credential and who are available to be hired as a tutor by parents. FRC maintains this list, but families are responsible for contacting and working directly with tutors. This list is not “approved” by FCPS and is only meant as a resource.

FCPS also partners with Varsity Tutors to provide students and families with extra resources for learning. Every student can take advantage of Varsity Tutors' services at no cost, including weekly live online classes, on demand 24/7 chat tutoring, essay editing, study resources such as recorded content, practice problems, and diagnostic tests.

FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan Goal 3: Academic Growth and Excellence, reminds us of our commitment to supporting each and every student and helping them meet or exceed high academic standards.
