Good Afternoon Woodson,

What a fantastic week we’ve had! Our Hey Day was a tremendous success, thanks to everyone's enthusiasm and participation. From delicious treats to exciting games, it was a joy to see our community come together to support our clubs. A special shoutout to our staff and students who participated in the volleyball game – congratulations to the faculty on their victory!

We also took a moment to celebrate our wonderful administrative professionals. A heartfelt thank you to Jackie O’Brien, Gina D’Angelo, Debbie Glover, Darlene Sheppard, Alexa Pugnetti, Cyndi Navarrete, Casey Delaney, Lynley Esposito, Michele Eovito, Leslee Little, Meri Farling, Rena Francis, and Marianna Conroy for their dedication to making Woodson a welcoming and smoothly operated school. Your efforts are greatly appreciated by us all.

Huge congratulations to our Deaf Academic Bowl students Sonan Sahgal, Maggie Smallwood, Ryan Chelline, and Karine Jelalian. This past weekend, they placed 3rd in the nation!!  What an accomplishment. Thank you so much to their dedicated coaches Shan Pillai and Julie Clinch!

Did you know?

  • There are 69 Purple Star Schools in FCPS and Woodson is one of them!  Are you interested in finding out more about what that means? There are several organizations that help new students transition to Woodson and help feel more at home and adjust. There is the ambassador program run by counselors Ms. Wood and Ms. Walter, and there is also Operation Patriot which is run by Social Studies teacher Mr. Rosebrock.
  • The Coast Guard is not part of the Department of Defense, but it is part of Homeland Security. The Coast Guard was founded August 4, 1790.
4. Woodson Deaf Academic Bowl Team

The Woodson Deaf Academic Bowl team competed at the National Academic Bowl Competition 2024 in Washington D.C. this past weekend. The team consisted of students Sonan Sahgal, Maggie Smallwood, Ryan Chelline, and Karine Jelalian, and coaches Shan Pillai and Julie Clinch. Amid fierce competition, our talented students showcased their unwavering dedication and skill, earning a well-deserved third place in the Nationals. California School for the Deaf at Fremont and Model Secondary School for the Deaf secured the top spots, but our team’s performance was nothing short of outstanding. Their precision, energy, and teamwork resonated throughout the arena, leaving an indelible mark on the National stage. We applaud their commitment and congratulate them on this remarkable achievement. For more details, you can check out the results here

Thank you to our amazing Administrative Professionals for not only the forward facing help you provide our students, staff, families, and community, but for all of the behind the scenes work that you do so effortlessly.

9. Counselor Corner

With just a few weeks left in the school year, we encourage students to finish well. You have plenty of time to positively  impact your grades or maintain your academic momentum. Use appointment passes during Returns, use the Academic Support padlet for content help and SOL released tests. We have tips on how to guard against procrastination and how to manage test anxiety.

For stress management, our Social/Emotional Supports padlet has many resources. We recommend using breathing techniques ahead of a big test or assignment, or in the moment of overwhelm. Find a breathing bubble on our Woodson Wellness site to guide you or learn the 4-7-8 Breathing technique to use at any time.

Seniors! With May 31, your last day(!) coming, please remember that regular attendance and commitment will help guard against “senioritis”. Maintain your status with your intended university by following through with strong grades and completing a successful high school transcript. If you are unsure of your plans or need support in your final decision, please see your counselor. We will host a final application workshop on May 28 at 10:15 in the Career Center for students who intend to start their college journey at NOVA.

Thank you to our students, parents, and faculty who partnered with us for our Spring Advisory Council meeting. It was a huge success and gave us an opportunity to connect, highlight our services, and receive feedback for future programming. We also celebrated our military-connected students with a breakfast. We love connecting with our community!

1. Message from Mr. Greata

Good Afternoon Woodson,

It has been an amazing week at Woodson and I am excited to share with you the recent accomplishments and upcoming opportunities within our vibrant school community.

This past week, our students displayed exceptional talent and creativity at the Pyramid Art Show and the Senior/AP Art Show. I was truly impressed by the variety and depth of the artwork presented. Each exhibition was unique and demonstrated the individual expressiveness and perspectives of our amazing student artists. Additionally, our band, orchestra, chorus, and guitar students broadened their horizons on their trip to New York City, where they received world-class instruction and visited significant cultural sites, including the 911 Memorial and Times Square.

Our College Partnership Program students recently visited St. Mary’s College of Maryland, gaining valuable insights into college life and opportunities. College Partnership Program is a countywide enrichment program that supports students as they explore, apply to, and enroll in college. This trip is just one of the many ways we support our students in their journey to higher education. Thank you Eileen Oviatt, Bryce Benson, Katherine Stransky, and Megan Howard for planning and supporting this trip.

We want to express our heartfelt gratitude to all who contribute to the success of our school. Next Wednesday we will be celebrating our administrative staff in the front office, student services, and CSS program, on Administrative Professionals Day. They deserve a special mention for their unwavering support of our school community. They set the welcoming tone at our school and are always ready to assist anyone, anytime.

We were also honored to thank our military families at this month’s breakfast, highlighting the strength their community brings to our community. Events like these serve as a testament to the resilience and commitment that run deep within our school community. Thank you to our Military Family and Life Counselor Alaina Anderson, DSS Josh Peters, Admin Assistant Debbie Glover, Counselors Adrienne Wood and Lizzie Walter for organizing this event. And thank you to everyone that put on purple this past Wednesday to show support for these cherished families.

There are lots of ways to get involved at Woodson next week, including our INOVA blood drive, PTSO Survey Fundraiser, AP proctoring, and joining the PTSO Board of Directors. Please see below for more information about each of these opportunities.

Have a great weekend,

Kevin Greata
Principal

2. 3rd Quarter Report Cards

3rd Quarter Report Cards were distributed to students on Thursday, April 18th during 7th period.

If your student has an off-campus waiver or Academy class for 7th period, their report card is in the Student Services office for pickup.

3. Month of the Military Child

Did you know?

  • We wear the color purple on PurpleUp! Day because it was chosen to symbolize all branches of the military, as it is a combination of Army green, Marine Corps crimson, and Coast Guard, Air Force, Space Force and Navy blue.
  • The Army, which is the oldest branch of the U.S military, is also the service branch with the most personnel. In 2022, there were 461,657 active members. The Navy is the second largest with 346,000 and it was founded on October 13, 1775.

Congratulations to Woodson Junior Mia Ramos for being selected as a new blog editor for the military teens blog "In Bloom"!

Our community helped turn FCPS purple on PurpleUp! Day, Wednesday, April 17th in recognition of FCPS’ 14,000 enrolled military-connected students.

4. Woodson Key Club & INOVA Blood Drive  Blood Donation Appointments Available!

Woodson Key Club is partnering with INOVA Blood Drive on Wednesday, April 24th in the Aux Gym and we have 128 slots to fill! We would love to have parents donate blood too, so please email Marie Phu at [email protected] to schedule an appointment time between 8am-2pm. A musical where people aren't just fighting to create America, but for its very soul.

Purchase your tickets at the door or at wtwdrama.org

9. Woodson Sports Physical Night - June 10th

Every year, the Woodson Athletic Training Program hosts a Sports Physical Night. The goal of Sports Physical Night is to provide a complete pre-participation examination screening that will leave student athletes with a valid VHSL physical for the entirety of the following school year. Each year, it is required that all student athletes have a completed VHSL physical on file before participating in sports. The price will be $50 as it has been in previous years. Hosting this event is our Athletic Training Program’s ONLY fundraiser for the year as we DO NOT receive any funding from the county. ALL proceeds go towards helping the program purchase supplies. Without your support we would not be able to provide the services we do for our student-athletes. If you are interested, please sign up for an appointment slot here.

As always, if you cannot make it to our night on June 10th, but still want to support FCPS, feel free to sign up for another school's event! Every school will host (or co-host) their own night. (We promise we won't be mad).

Want to Volunteer??

We are always looking for physicians and HCP's to complete the actual physical exams (MD, DO, NP, PA) as well other HCP’s comfortable with taking vital signs. If you are willing and able to donate your time, it is greatly appreciated. You can sign up here.

If you can’t make it, but you know of some others that would be able to assist us, please feel free to spread the word and sign up sheet! If you have any questions or would like more information, please feel free to reach out to Chris Hogge, ATC at [email protected] .

10. FAFSA Help

According to recent news reports, as many as 30% fewer graduating seniors have completed and submitted a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Many schools rely upon this form to grant students financial aid award letters.

Families who have questions or persistent issues filling out the FAFSA might consider scheduling a free appointment with our partners at College Access Fairfax. Email [email protected]. All FAFSA help provided by our school or College Access Fairfax is free.

11. College & Career Center

Resources for College & Career planning can be found on the Woodson College & Career Padlets. All upcoming events with registration links and more detailed info are listed in the Woodson Wide School Calendar. College & Career Center Newsletters are posted HERE.

Congratulations to Ms. Emma Miller for being selected as the February winner for the FCPS CARES Award!

12. Spring 2024 Advanced Placement (AP) Testing Attendance

AP exams are administered May 6-May 16, 2024. With parent/guardian permission, Woodson HS students are allowed to be released early following a morning AP exam and arrive late before their scheduled afternoon AP exam. All pre-arranged absence forms (no phone calls or emails) are due to Mrs. Little in the attendance office by 3pm April 19th. Please keep in mind that all classes will continue with instruction during AP testing, and that students are responsible for all assignments from each class. AP Excused Absence Forms will be given to students in their AP classes and available in the Attendance Office.

Student Services is also still looking for parent volunteers to help proctor AP exams in May! Shifts are typically from 7:30-11:30am or 11:00-3:00pm, with some variation depending on the exam, and you may sign up for as many shifts as you’d like. A more specific schedule will be shared closer to the AP exam testing window. No experience or training is required…we’ll show you everything you need to know! If you are able to volunteer and help, please contact Woodson school counselors Jamie Korpacz ([email protected]) and Victoria Powell ([email protected]). Thank you!

13. PTSO Information

The Woodson PTSO is in need of 3 parents that are able to volunteer their time to join the 2024-2025 PTSO Officer Board. If you are interested or would like to learn more about the positions that will be open, please contact PTSO Co-President Sara Mastro at [email protected].

Survey Participants Still Needed!

Dr. Ben Bigelow from the Construction Science Division at University of Oklahoma selected parents and guardians at Woodson to participate in their research titled “Influences and Perceptions of Parents on Construction Careers.” This research is being conducted at the University of Oklahoma.

There is an ongoing shortage of skilled tradespeople in construction and this project seeks to better understand parent’s perceptions, preferences, and motivators relating to career pathways.  As primary influencers of the next generation of workers, parental perceptions are vital in understanding how to address the shortage of skilled workers.

This survey is collecting perceptions from parents around the country to identify the best strategies for addressing this issue.

If the Woodson PTSO gets enough participants, they will donate $500 to our PTSO!

1. Message from Mr. Greata

Good Afternoon Woodson,

As April unfurls its blossoms of spring, we also commemorate Autism Acceptance Month. Notably, according to the CDC, one in 44 children in the United States is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. This emphasizes the importance of fostering inclusivity in our school environment. Here at Woodson, we recognize the significance of embracing neurodiversity, acknowledging that each student, including those diagnosed with autism, brings a valuable array of talents and strengths to our community. They enrich our collective experience and remind us of the beauty and richness found in our differences.

Spring is an exciting time of year as students participate in many culminating activities, demonstrating what they have learned and celebrating their accomplishments. One of these exciting events is our Woodson Pyramid Art Show, where we get to experience the stunning array of artwork from our talented K-11 students, showcasing their creativity and hard work. I hope you can join us on April 16 from 6-8 pm in Cav Hall.

Spring also beckons us to lean on our families for volunteers and to seek new parent leadership for the upcoming year. Please consider the following opportunities to get involved with Woodson, with options to suit all levels of availability and interest:

  • Mild: The PTSO is participating in an Oklahoma University survey fundraiser. The more people that fill out the survey, the more funds are raised for the PTSO, which will go directly back into our school. The survey collects information about the perceptions of families of high school-aged students regarding shop class, vocational/technical training, and careers in construction. Please take a little bit of time to fill out [this survey] and support our school.
  • Medium: We urgently need parent volunteers to help proctor AP exams, running from May 6-17, with shifts in the morning and afternoon. If you can help, please contact Jamie Korpacz and Victoria Powell. Their emails are in the weekly!
  • Spicy: Our Parent-Teacher-Student Organization (PTSO) is currently seeking three enthusiastic volunteers to serve as officers on their Board of Directors for the next school year. The PTSO plays a crucial role in supporting both students and staff. Joining this dynamic team is a wonderful way to make a significant impact on our school community. Please consider stepping up and reach out to Co-President Sara Mastro at [email protected].

Whether you like your involvement mild, medium, or spicy, your engagement is crucial to our school’s success. Each volunteer, every survey filled, and each new officer adds to the strength and vibrancy of Woodson. Together, let’s continue to build a welcoming and inclusive community where every student thrives.

Thank you in advance for your support and involvement.

Kevin Greata
Principal

2. Month of the Military Child

On average, children in military families move six to nine times during their K-12 school career. That’s about three times more frequently than their civilian peers. Between now and April 17th, make sure to stop by Student Services and place a sticker on the map of all the places you have lived and all the places you know your family member has been deployed or stationed at!

Join our community and turn FCPS purple on PurpleUp! Day, Wednesday, April 17th. Wear purple in recognition of FCPS’ 14,000 enrolled military-connected students.

3. Partners for Safe Teen Driving Seminar

Attention all 10th grade students and their parents.  The last PSTD will be Monday April 15th.  All new drivers and parents must attend a state mandated traffic safety seminar. The 90 minutes seminar will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will take place in the Woodson Auditorium.  If you already attended the seminar, you do NOT have to attend this one.  If you miss this seminar you will have to pay $30 to attend the seminar through Fairfax County’s ACE program.

Questions? Please contact David O'Hara at [email protected].

4. Pyramid Art Show

Our Annual Woodson Pyramid Art Show and Senior/AP Art Show festivities will be taking place next week!

We invite you to join us in Cav Hall on Tuesday, April 16th from 6-8pm, for the Pyramid Art Show, which will feature lots of fabulous K-11 artwork!

The hand-painted Furniture Silent Auction will also be happening at the reception, along with mini art canvas sales.

5. Spring 2024 SOL Testing

SOL Season – Laptops and Personal Electronic Devices

Students are required to use FCPS-issued laptops for SOL testing. Students are responsible for making sure their software is up to date and their keyboards, screens, etc. are in good working order. To ensure software is up-to-date, laptops should be powered on and connected to the internet before the test date. Updates will download automatically. All hardware repairs must be completed by Tuesday, April 25th.

If students need FCPS laptop technical support at Woodson HS, please submit a ticket using the Student Support Request Page.

Our walk-in hours in Room A112/A114 are:

  • Odd Days during Learning Seminar
  • Monday - 7:45am - 8:10am

Any other time you should try to make an appointment using a ticket from the Support Portal.

Also, we want to remind families that students may not have access to their electronic personal devices of any kind (phones, watches, etc.) in the SOL testing environment, except in the case of a documented medical need.  Please be aware that any personal devices carried into the testing environment will be subject to the school’s established procedures for addressing this as a test security concern.

The SOL Testing Dates are:

Tuesday/Wednesday, April 30 or May 1 – English Reading
Thursday, May 2 - Chemistry, Geosystems, VAUS History
Monday/Tuesday, May 20 or 21 - Biology
Wednesday, May 22 - Algebra 1/Algebra 2
Thursday, May 23 – Geometry

6. Class of 2024 Events

Prom will take place on Saturday, May 11th at Westwood Country Club. Tickets will be $85. Please note that in order for a senior to purchase Prom tickets, all student financial obligations must be met before a student is able to purchase their ticket or a ticket is purchased for them, including parking tickets, library fees, senior dues, course fees and tech fees.

We will have a compiled list of student obligations at the Prom ticket table when they go on sale starting Monday, April 29th.

Celebrate Your Plan Day will be on Monday, May 20th during all lunches (11:20am-1:20pm) in the Auditorium Lobby. What is your plan after High School? Employment, College, Trade School, Military Service, Gap Year...? We want to celebrate you and all of the different post-secondary plans! Celebrate Your Plan Day (formerly known as Balloon Day) has been a Woodson tradition for many years. Seniors will post paper balloons, with their plans written on them, on the windows in the Auditorium Lobby where they will be on display until after graduation. We’ll also have some treats available for seniors as well. We can’t wait to celebrate our seniors!

Graduation for the Woodson Class of 2024 will be on Thursday, June 6th, 2024 at 2:00pm at EagleBank Arena on the George Mason University Campus.

Please visit our Class of 2024 webpage to see Frequently Asked Questions, Final Exam dates, and so much more!

7. School Health Services Satisfaction Survey

The Fairfax County Health Department and FCPS School Health Services invite parents/caregivers to participate in a survey on the level of satisfaction with support provided to your school community by School Health Services. The survey takes about five minutes to complete and is open until Friday, April 26. Your feedback can help to improve school health services.

8. 2 Liter Bottles Still Needed for Biology Classes

The Woodson Biology Team still needs 2 Liter soda bottles with the cap for an ecology lab our students will be doing. They should be rinsed out and label removed, if possible, and dropped off by April 19th.  Bottles can be dropped off to any science teacher at Woodson. We appreciate your support and donations!

This week our school showed appreciation to our Assistant Principal's, Director of Student Services, and Director of Student Activities for Assistant Principal's Week. They provide support to not only our student body, but also to our entire staff and Woodson community. Thank you for all that you do!

1. Message from Mr. Greata

Good Afternoon Woodson,

Welcome back! I hope everyone had a restful and joyful spring break and found the transition back to our routines smooth and welcoming.

April greets us with the celebration of diversity and neurodiversity, highlighting the richness of our community. This month, we honor the Month of the Military Child, National Arab American Heritage Month, and Autism Awareness Month. It’s a privilege to be part of such a vibrant, culturally rich community, and we eagerly anticipate continuing to learn from and about the strengths that each unique individual brings to our collective experience.

Our military-connected students, numbering over 200 strong at Woodson, exemplify resilience and courage. To honor these incredible young individuals and their families, we will all wear purple on April 17th, symbolically "purpling up” in support of our military families. It’s a small gesture that reflects our community's solidarity and appreciation.

This past week, we celebrated Assistant Principal Appreciation Week and National Librarian Appreciation Day. A heartfelt thank you goes out to our assistant principals, director of student services, and director of student activities for their unwavering dedication, leadership, and the countless hours they invest in our staff and students. Your efforts are the pulse of our school.

We also want to give a huge shout out to our amazing librarians for bringing light and guidance to our daily lives. Your passion and enthusiasm make our library a beacon of knowledge and joy. Thank you, Lisa Muir and Erinn Harris, for everything you do!

We’re reaching out to all Woodson parents for assistance in proctoring the upcoming AP exams this May. With thousands of exams to administer, we rely on the support of parent volunteers to make this possible. The exams run from May 6th through the17th, with morning and afternoon shifts available. If you can lend a hand, please contact counselors Jamie Korpacz and Victoria Powell.

Lastly, a reminder that Woodson will be closed on April 10th in observance of Eid al Fitr. To everyone observing Eid Mubarak!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Principal

2. Month of the Military Child

This year to celebrate and recognize our outstanding current and former military connected students and families, we will be sharing unique and interesting facts about being in the military community.

Every April, all month long, we celebrate the courage, perseverance and tenacity demonstrated by our military-connected children, youth, and teens and what they mean to our community. Though MilKids are some of the most adaptable and resilient youth in the world, we know frequent moves and family separations can be hard on them. 6. Woodson Chorus A Cappella Attends Carnegie Hall

At the start of spring break, some members of the Woodson Chorus A Cappella had the distinct honor of working with and performing at Carnegie Hall with Deke Sharon. Deke is most famously known as the composer of the vocal music for the Pitch Perfect movie franchise. Performers came from across the globe including the United Kingdom and Hong Kong. Woodson Chorus was the only public high school represented. The students received the invitation to perform after the organizers heard us through our YouTube channel. Congratulations to the following students for representing Woodson on such a prestigious and global stage: Carson Fenner, Emma Fig, Theo Hanna, Jonah Hilbert, Sarah Hymans, Bailey Libby, Anya Malaveetil, Charlotte Reymann, Brandon Spratt, Brielle Steeves, and Claire Warden.

7. Woodson in Europe

Woodson and Falls Church High Schools banded together in our first ever joint educational tour for Spring Break 2024!  Woodson Spanish Teacher Sra. Katrina Cohen and Falls Church French Teacher Mme. Marine Herodet helped to guide 14 valiant travelers through Europe.

They visited Madrid, Toledo, and Paris to practice Spanish and French and develop cultural awareness as ethical and global citizens. They were all so proud to represent FCPS abroad and demonstrate our own diversity and the talent we possess. The student’s knowledge of art, history and language was impressive, and countless connections were made as they studied the masterpieces in the Prado and the Louvre! Everyone expanded their horizons and tried new foods and activities that they might not have thought possible. Stepping outside comfort zones meant taking a Flamenco dance class together and learning to play Pétanque in the park! They tasted escargot and frog legs, and tapas galore. They even got to see Spanish swords forged in fire and hammered out right in front of our eyes!

All the travelers bonded together and experienced the global classroom and the lessons it offered. All the students saw the value of educational travel, and are looking forward to a new study abroad opportunity very soon!

8. Parent Volunteers Needed

Calling all Woodson parents…we need you to help proctor AP exams in May!

As you know, we administer thousands of AP exams each spring to our Cavaliers and it takes a great deal of planning to implement and execute such a large scale testing plan. We rely on parent volunteers to proctor and cannot administer these without your help!

This year, AP exams run from May 6-17. Shifts are typically from 7:30am-11:30am or 11:00am-3:00pm, with some variation depending on the exam, and you may sign up for as many shifts as you’d like. A more specific schedule will be shared closer to the AP exam testing window. No experience or training is required…we’ll show you everything you need to know! If you are able to volunteer and help, please contact Woodson school counselors Jamie Korpacz ([email protected]) and Victoria Powell ([email protected]). Thank you!

9. 2 Liter Bottles Needed for Biology Classes

The Woodson Biology Team needs 2 Liter soda bottles with the cap for an ecology lab our students will be doing. They should be rinsed out and label removed, if possible, and dropped off by April 19th.  Bottles can be dropped off to any science teacher at Woodson. We appreciate your support and donations!

10. Counselor Corner

As we begin Quarter 4, we are planning to open school for the 2024-25 school year. In order to staff all the classes we offer, we halted schedule change requests. Thank you for your understanding as Woodson Leadership assesses course needs and works to fill all expected teacher positions. Without accurate and stable course request numbers, this process cannot be completed. Additionally, students who plan to take a summer course should click here to register before classes fill up and close. FCPS allows any student to repeat one failed class through credit recovery. Registration will be open soon, using the same summer learning registration link. Lastly, any student who requested to take an Academy course was notified by the CTE office this week.

We hosted our 2nd annual Junior Focus Day this week! It was so exciting to see the sessions buzzing with student learning and engagement about post-secondary planning. Whether your pathway leads to the military, workforce, college, or a technical school, students received valuable information. Please review the Junior Focus Day padlet which will be updated with notes and slides next week.

We celebrate our military children and families this month of April. Please look through the Woodson Weekly for events to honor our community.

1. Message from Mr. Greata

Good Afternoon Woodson,

We're proud to announce the exceptional achievements of our students at the Annual Fairfax County Regional Science and Engineering Fair. Three of our students, Maya Moses, Joseph Tso, and Nathan Vailikit were Grand Prize Nominees and Austin Cui, Benjamin Hall, and Matthew Lee were Grand Prize Winners and will be competing in the International Science and Engineering Fair in May. Along with these great achievements, Woodson students received numerous awards and scholarships (too many to list), and I could not have been more amazed at the quality of scientific inquiry.  Our students are going to change the world!

As spring unfolds, we're preparing for a significant change—our transition to Carter G. Woodson. This presents us with a unique opportunity to reflect on our values and strengthen our sense of community. To ensure our students remain at the heart of this process, we're forming a student ambassador committee. Today, application forms were sent to students via their Schoology accounts. Please discuss this opportunity with your student to gauge their interest in participating.

A heartfelt thank you to all staff members who participated in our annual Chili Cook-off. The time spent finding the right recipe, preparing the chili, setting up the room, judging, and enjoying the amazing food, made this event a success. A special shout out to Kathy Martin and Jackie O’Brien for all your efforts in organizing this cook off for our staff. And the Chili Champion is … (drum roll)...Mike Kuykendall with his Stir Crazy Beef Chili!

March is also National Athletic Trainer’s Appreciation Month, and we want to acknowledge Chris Hogge and Jen Cooke for the amazing care, expertise, and dedication they pour into our athletic programs. Their work goes well beyond the field of play, and supports both game preparation and recuperation. Thank you for all you do!

A few housekeeping items prior to the break:

  • School offices will be closed all next week (3-25 to 3-29) and there will be no Woodson Weekly or PTSO Wemail
  • You may contact administrators through our webpage
  • Students will return to the building on Wednesday, April 3rd, which will be an Odd Day
  • No homework or major assignments will be due the first two days after the break

Wishing you all a restful and enjoyable Spring Break!

Kevin Greata
Principal

2. Calendar Reminders

Spring Break is March 25th-March 29th.
The Woodson school building and it's offices will be closed.

Monday, April 1st, and Tuesday, April 2nd, are school planning and teacher workdays, respectively. There will be no school for students on these days.

3. No Woodson Weekly or PTSO Wemail Over Spring Break

Congratulations to Woodson’s Mock Trial Team who competed last weekend in the Virginia State Championships in Richmond, Virginia. Our team of nine dedicated students utilized creativity, intelligence, and vigor to attack a complicated fact pattern, conflicting witness statements, complex evidentiary rules, and the challenges of courtroom procedures in four full mock trials against extremely talented competition. Based on the scoring of real attorneys and collegiate mock trial competitors, our team won two of four mock trials and was ranked as the 10th best team in Virginia. This is Woodson’s highest finish in the State Championships since 2019.  Well done!  Our Mock Trial Team: Taraneh Doust, Sarah Courtney, Chance Jones, Meredith Phipps, Josie Owens, Jazzy Singh, Franchesca Douchine, Ceyda Bayraktar, and Aritak Waisi.

Here is a general survey link that families can use to take the survey.

The survey is designed to gather data for Strategic Plan Pillar B: Vibrant Home, School, and Community Partnerships; and to better recognize, understand, respect, and address family strengths and needs in our schools and community.

8. Updated COVID Recommendations

In accordance with the updated Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) respiratory virus guidance, FCPS and the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) have updated school COVID-19 recommendations.

New respiratory virus guidance applies to respiratory viral illnesses, including COVID-19, influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Students who have symptoms of, test positive for, or have been diagnosed with a respiratory virus may return to school when the student is fever-free for 24 hours without fever reducing medication; AND the student’s symptoms have improved or resolved.

Students should follow additional precautions as outlined per the CDC upon resumption of normal activities.

Should I Send My Child to School?

Please refer to the chart on this attendance webpage if your child is experiencing symptoms or illnesses, and you are unsure if they should go to school.

Thank you for helping keep our students and staff healthy.

1. Message from Mr. Greata

Good Afternoon Woodson,

What a remarkable week it's been at Woodson High School! From the thrilling moments at FanQuest to the exceptional presentations at the Student Advisory Council meeting, our students and community continue to showcase their dedication, talent, and spirit.

Firstly, a heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us for FanQuest last weekend. The obstacle course, senior night, and the game created unforgettable memories and showcased the vibrant spirit of our community. Your support and enthusiasm brought out the best in us, reinforcing the strong bonds that make our school truly special.

This week, we were honored to host student leaders from across the county for the Student Advisory Council to the Superintendent presentations. Addressing a wide range of topics, from grading systems to increasing inclusion for students with disabilities, our students impressed everyone with their insight and innovative ideas. Cara King, Miranda Baxter, Shaheera Kamin, and David Freeman, our Woodson representatives, made us proud, embodying the excellence and commitment that define our school.

Celebration is in order for our Woodson Orchestra, Choir, and Band! Achieving Superior ratings at State Assessments is no small feat, and having all 12 adjudicated ensembles earn such distinction is a testament to the hard work and talent of our students and staff. Woodson will be strongly represented at the VA All State performances on April 19th in Richmond, VA.

Thank you math teachers and Math Honor Society students! In celebration of Pi Day, our Math Department treated Woodson staff to pie, infusing our week with a delightful blend of education and enjoyment. Such moments underscore the unique, supportive culture we cherish at Woodson.

As we continue to navigate the school year, let’s carry forward the enthusiasm, creativity, and commitment to excellence that define Woodson High School. Together, we are creating a legacy of achievement, inclusion, and community that will resonate far beyond this year.

Thank you for your continued support and engagement. Have a wonderful weekend!

The form to request a late test is available here and in Student Services. The completed form (and payment if required) is due to Mrs. Glover in Student Services no later than Friday, April 5th.

AP Exam dates can be found on the College Board website.

8. Immunization Requirements for Rising Seniors

The Code of Virginia requires all students to be immunized against certain communicable diseases prior to entrance into Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS).

All students entering twelfth grade will be required to receive one dose of Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY) administered at age 16 or older, and prior to the beginning of school.

Twelfth grade students cannot begin school in August without proper Meningococcal documentation.

Please provide one of the following documents to Darlene Sheppard at [email protected] as soon as possible:

  1. An updated immunization record showing that the student has received the Meningococcal vaccine.
  2. A note on a healthcare provider’s letterhead stating the date the Meningococcal vaccine was given.
  3. A healthcare provider’s written statement of a permanent or temporary medical exemption.
  4. A notarized Religious Exemption Form which is available online

Immunizations are available from your student's healthcare provider or the Fairfax County Health Department. The Health Department clinic locations and hours are available online at: https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/health/immunization/school or by calling 703-246-2411.

Please contact Darlene Sheppard at [email protected] if you have any questions.

Cav Kudo's recipients for the week of March 11th. Way to go Cavs!
Faculty and Staff nominate students that have been seen doing an act of kindness, which is reflective of our school’s mission of creating a healthy environment of mutual respect, responsibility, equity, and inclusion.

9. Kiss and Ride Reminders

All student drop off MUST be at the designated Kiss & Ride areas. Students/parents/caregivers will be redirected as necessary. Please do not drop off and park in the staff parking lot. The school day begins at 8:10am!

  • Bus and staff entrance
    • This is the first entrance off Whitacre Road from 236 into the Woodson property
  • Senior parking lot
    • The second entrance off Whitacre Road into the Senior lot is for Senior student parking only.
  • Whitacre Road Kiss and Ride
    • The third entrance off Whitacre Road is the entrance to the Kiss and Ride loop by the tennis courts. Drop off students BEFORE 8AM at Door 9.
  • Junior parking lot
    • The last entrance off Whitacre Road, which is also the stadium entrance. When looking at the stadium, the Junior lot is on the left.
  • Pickett Road Kiss and Ride
    • If you are coming to Woodson from 236, use the Pickett Road entrance, NOT Whitacre Rd. This will allow you to drop your child(ren) off at Door 2. Only staff can access the front lot where Kiss and Ride forms from Whitacre Road.

DO NOT park at the shopping center across the street; they will tow your car.

10. Counselor Corner

Now that we have completed Academic Advising and the deadline has passed for students to change course requests, Woodson Leadership begins the large task of assessing instructional needs and hiring for next school year. Students who created a plan to take a Dual Enrollment course for next year have until March 22 to complete the Dual Enrollment process. This is a firm NOVA deadline. Students taking the class through FCPS online campus should have returned their registration form to their counselor or do so immediately. (Students will not be added to a DE course unless the form is received.)

Attention parents! We would love to see you in May! Please complete this google form if you are available to volunteer to proctor AP exam(s). We are grateful for the help, as we have hundreds of students testing from May 6-17th.

Reminder for Juniors to mark their calendar for April 3, Junior Focus Day! They will choose 3 sessions to assist them to reach their post-secondary goals.

Sophomore information night was a huge success this week! Please refer to the Sophomore padlet for the presentation as needed. School counselors continue to visit 10th grade HPE classes to deliver the Wellness presentation. Students can find support on both our Woodson Wellness site and our Social/Emotional Supports padlet.

As we finish Q3, we want to remind students to finish strong and seek academic support as needed. Our Academic Support padlet has resources like test-taking tips and guarding against procrastination.

Students in Ms. Duarte's science class makes chalk in their limiting reaction lab.

Previous News, but still important, is now located on our Woodson website here. 1. Message from Mr. Greata

Good Afternoon Woodson,

Excitement is in the air as we step into a week filled with recognition, anticipation, and celebration. From honoring our invaluable social workers to gearing up for an electrifying FanQuest event, there's something special for everyone in our community to look forward to.

This week, as we celebrate National School Social Workers Week, let's take a moment to appreciate the extraordinary individuals among us, Shannon Rousos, Kaitlin Collier, and Amy Young. Our social workers are the unsung heroes, providing essential support and resources to our students in need. We are incredibly grateful for their tireless efforts and commitment to our students' well-being.

Mark your calendars for an exhilarating Saturday night at Woodson! FanQuest is here, and it promises to be an unforgettable evening. Kick off the festivities with a tailgate in C Hall at 5:30 pm, followed by pregame activities at 6:45 pm and the much-anticipated tipoff at 7 pm. It's a celebration of sportsmanship, teamwork, and Woodson pride. Don't miss out on the fun!

With spring break and the end of the 3rd quarter just around the corner, now is the perfect time to check in on ParentVUE. Engage in meaningful discussions with your student, and don't hesitate to reach out to teachers if necessary. Together, we can ensure our students are on the path to success.

March is also Women's History Month, and we are embracing the opportunity to learn and grow through the stories of remarkable women. Through guest speakers and the active participation of students and staff, we are discovering and celebrating the contributions of women who have shaped our history and our present. Join us in this enlightening journey.

As we look forward to the start of Ramadan next Monday, we want to ensure that fasting students know they are welcome to spend lunchtime in the library. It's a quiet space for reflection and accommodation during this important time.

Lastly, we are thrilled to invite you to our Sophomore Info Night on March 13, from 6:30 to 8 pm in the Woodson Auditorium. We have the honor of hosting Erin Slater, Director of Undergraduate Admission at UNC Greensboro, who will share invaluable insights into the college admissions process. Sophomore families, this is an event you won't want to miss.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend - don't forget to set your clocks forward!

The DECA State Leadership Conference provides students with the opportunity to compete against the top talent in the state in categories focused on a variety of industries, including Marketing, Management, Hospitality & Tourism, Finance, and Entrepreneurship. Examples of event categories are linked below.

Special recognition goes to the following students for their achievements at the conference:

- An Duong and Brianna Nguyen, Buying and Merchandising Team Decision Making,  7th Place Overall

- Matthew Hiu, Hospitality Services Team Decision Making, Top 10 exam score

- Grace Degrandez-Mamani, Principles of Hospitality and Tourism, Top 10 role play score

An and Brianna qualified for the 2024 International Career Development Conference in Anaheim, California. This conference hosts over 20,000 DECA members, advisors, and business partners for four days at the end of April.

For more information about how your child can be involved with DECA and Marketing and Entrepreneurship classes at Woodson, please contact Kelsey Treague at [email protected]

11. Safely View the Total Solar Eclipse

A total solar eclipse will occur on Monday, April 8, and will be viewable, depending on weather, in Fairfax County. The eclipse will begin in our area around 2:04 p.m. and end around 4:32 p.m., with the maximum eclipse occurring around 3:20 p.m.

Because the timing overlaps with some school dismissals, it is crucial that students understand the importance of safe viewing practices. We encourage families to review these Solar Eclipse Resources, especially the eye safety information. We hope everyone takes the opportunity to learn more about this extraordinary natural phenomenon while prioritizing safe solar viewing.

Congratulations to Woodson OneAct. Out of the top four acting awards for VHSL States, Silas Blocker and Lucas Bickford took home two of them, and the team as a whole placed 3rd. Way to go!
