Prepare for those standardized tests by expanding your vocabulary. Go to http://wordsmith.org/words/today.html and sign up to receive A.Word.A.Day in your mailbox every day! The site provides pronunciation, definitions, parts of speech, usage, quotations, language of origin, etc.

FREE: VOCABULARY BUILDER GAME

RICE DONATION at www.freerice.com This is a cool vocabulary-building site that gives free rice through the United Nations. The vocabulary words are interesting and challenging, and each correct answer donates 20 grains of rice through the UN World Food Program to help end hunger. If you get the word wrong, the word will be shown again so you will have the chance to answer correctly from what you learned. Check it out!

FREE - ONLINE TEST PREP

  • COLLEGE BOARD PARTNERS WITH KHAN ACADEMY TO PRODUCE FREE SAT PREP MATERIAL – Khan Academy is developing comprehensive, best-in-class SAT prep materials that is free.  This partnership directly addresses one of the greatest inequalities around college entrance exams:  the culture of high-priced test preparation.  These new materials will be available spring of 2015 – a full year before the launch of the redesigned SAT.  Students will be able to practice at their own pace using Khan Academy’s personalized learning dashboard.  The dashboard recommends exercises at each student’s level and shows progress point, and badges as students accomplish their “SAT Mission.”  In the meantime, students taking the SAT in 2014-2015 can begin practicing now with hundreds of questions from unreleased SATs and over 2000 videos with step-by-step solutions.  Explore current SAT tutorials at www.khanacademy.org/sat.

  • www.majortests.com - Prep by test section, including essay prompts; get an explanation for answers.

  • Pinceton Review has created an online test preparation site so thorough that just the section on basic test taking skills can take 2 hours. Paid for by the U.S. Army and designed to help students prepare for standardized tests through basic math and English skills, you will be asked if you would like a recruiter to contact you. Your answer will be honored, yes or no. Users need to be at least 13 years of age and will have 45 days to complete the course. Turn off pop-up blockers and go to www.march2success.com/ to check it out.   This site is excellent preparation for the ASVAB as well as the ACT and SAT.

Khan Academy offers practice for math, science, economics and finance, arts and humanities, and computing courses. It also offers FREE test prep for the SAT. Visit www.khanacademy.org to register.

SCHOOL LIBRARY

Students can access a free full SAT course, and multiple other resources, through the testing database (TERC) in the school-provided Gale suite.  Log into Blackboard, click on the “eCART” tab, Scroll down to “Library Resources – Testing and Education Reference Center”, and click the icon in the box.

Free Practice Tests are now available online from the Fairfax County Public Library. There is a wide variety of interactive online tests and tutorial courses designed to help students and adults succeed on academic or licensing tests including the ACT, SAT, and several AP tests. The program provides immediate scoring, complete answer explanations, and individualized analyses of your results. Visit https://research.fairfaxcounty.gov/homework, click on Test Preparation in left-hand column. Some personal information will be required including your public library card number.
