Carter G. Woodson Rededication Ceremony
Hundreds gathered to rededicate C. G. Woodson High School, now honoring Dr. Carter G. Woodson, the "Father of Black History." The school, previously named after W.T. Woodson, a former superintendent opposed to desegregation, underwent a renaming process after community requests. The rededication ceremony celebrated the new namesake and reflected on the school's history. Watch the ceremony to hear several moving speeches about what this symbolizes for our community.
Our students played a significant role in the renaming process. The Woodson Vocal Ensemble opened the ceremony with "The Star-Spangled Banner" and later sang "The Lesson." Student performer, Sarea Manson, sang "Lift Every Voice and Sing." Speeches from leaders of the Black Student Union emphasized the importance of feeling welcomed and included in the school community, highlighting how the name change reflected this commitment. Student Ambassadors took the lead in educating staff and students about Carter G. Woodson and his influential contributions to history. Additionally, leadership students guided distinguished guests around the building and welcomed community members to the rededication ceremony.
