School Independent Scholarships & Contests

The scholarship list of school-independent scholarships is below important information.  Read the important information at least once!

Scholarships are updated weekly with newsletter updates.

  • Check with Mrs. Ishii in the Career Center for additions. Parents and students are reminded to check with schools as well as the Career Center for school-specific scholarships.

  • Only scholarship information sent to W.T. Woodson is listed here. Check early. Many excellent scholarships have early due dates.

  • Parents and students are encouraged to plan ahead. Many scholarship applications cannot be completed quickly. Many applications require attachments from several sources.

  • Family Connection has a great scholarship list!! Look under the"Colleges" tab, Scholarship List. Check it out every week too.

  • Check out the listing provided by the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia.  It posts a number of scholarships offered by local businesses and organizations.  Visit www.cfnova.org/page10003427.cfm

  • Always remember to check with the colleges to which you are applying for scholarship opportunities. These are often found under the financial aid section of a college website.

IMPORTANT Cautions

Neither W.T. Woodson, FCPS, nor the administrators, teachers, or staff of Woodson or FCPS are endorsing any of the listed scholarships.  The information is only offered for your convenience.  Families are responsible for ensuring a scholarship is appropriate for their student(s).  Note other cautions that follow.

Some agencies offering scholarships ask for social security numbers. Use extreme caution when providing a social security number. Although winners may have to provide it to be awarded the scholarship, you should NOT have to provide a social security number in an application. A compromise may be to provide your last 4 digits: XXX-XX-1234.

Many applications are now behind a required, online registration. Parents need to check to ensure the application is appropriate for their student(s) prior to completing/submitting. We are unable to register for these scholarships to discover everything in the application. We cannot check what we cannot see.

If you or your parents feel a scholarship asks too many personal questions or will share too much about you online if you win, you may want to look at other scholarships.

Some scholarship sponsors take ownership (copyright) of all applicant's work.  This means you cannot use the work without written permission from the scholarship sponsor.  Be sure you check for this possibility.  Know what you are giving away.
