ASVAB TESTING AT WTW

5 December – Registration for the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery, the ASVAB, will begin on Friday, 1 November.  Students in grades 10 - 12 are welcome to take this test for career research purposes with no strings attached.  Students interested in enlisting in the military will need to take this test.  Take the test easily and conveniently here at WTW.  Visit the Career Center for more information and a registration form.  Visit the Career Center by Friday, 22 November to ensure completion of the registration process!

MOCK ACT/MOCK SAT

9 November, 8-11:30 am, Woodson Cafeteria – The Woodson PTSO is partnering with Mindworks Educational Services for this fundraising opportunity to provide a chance for Woodson students to take a practice SAT or ACT.  You can pay $20 at the door on the day of testing.  The mandatory score report session to go over results of the test will be on 4 December at 7:00 pm (Woodson Cafeteria B).  For more information and to register, visit www.woodsonptso.org.  Once registered, you will receive an email with payment procedures.

ON-SITE ADMISSIONS AT WTW

Two of our Virginia public universities will hold on-site admissions sessions to share decisions face-to-face during Virginia College Application Week.  Take advantage of learning immediately if you have been admitted or what you can do to be more admissible if you are not yet ready.

  • Radford University, Tuesday, 19 November - Interested students will need to:
    • Submit your transcript release form to Student Services, ASAP.
    • Register with Mrs. Ishii in the Career Center by Monday, 11 November.
    • Discuss/print your ACT/SAT test scores with Mrs. Ishii by or before Monday, 11 November.
    • Complete the Common Application or institutional application for Radford University by Monday, 11 November.
  • The University of Mary Washington (UMW), Thursday, 21 November - Interested students will need to:
    • Submit your transcript release form to Student Services, ASAP.
    • Register with Mrs. Ishii in the Career Center by or before Tuesday, 12 November.
    • Discuss/print your ACT/SAT test scores with Mrs. Ishii by or before Tuesday, 12 November.
    • Complete the Common Application for UMW by or before Tuesday, 12 November.

WEST POINT LEADERSHIP AND ETHICS CONFERENCE

The West Point Society of DC will host the 12th Annual West Point Leadership and Ethics Conference (WPLEC) for the National Capital Region on Wednesday, 11 March at the George Mason University Law School, Arlington Campus.  This free conference provides a leadership development experience that enhances participants’ ability to make better decisions as they confront ethical challenges in school and beyond.  WTW is allowed to nominate four Juniors who are outstanding student leaders (two male and two female) and who have at least a 3.5 or better GPA.  WTW Juniors who wish to join this conference need to provide their email, a brief statement explaining how they are a good match for this opportunity, and a resume to the Career Center by 3 pm on Monday, 25 November.

VIRTUAL FINANCIAL AID NIGHT

Sunday 17 November, 7 - 8 pm – The University of Dayton is hosting a virtual financial aid night.  The information provided will be applicable to students regardless of where the college search process takes them.  If you are finding it difficult to get to a local information session, learn from this one.  For more information and to register, visit: https://udayton.edu/m/afford.php.

NEW SPECIAL OPPORTUNITIES

HUGH O’BRIAN YOUTH LEADERSHIP (HOBY) VIRGINIA LEADERSHIP SEMINAR

29 May – 31 June 2020, Christopher Newport University, Newport News, VA – The Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) is for outstanding Sophomores.  This 3-day training seminar is designed to inspire and develop a global community of youth dedicated to leadership, service, and innovation.  Seminar attendees will participate in interactive leadership training, meet state leaders, and make new friends; experience life on a university campus; learn about themselves and how to be an impactful leader, and discover how personal, group, and societal leadership lead to social change.  Woodson is allowed to nominate one Sophomore to attend, for a fee of $225, which covers all lodging, meals, and training materials for the 3-day seminar.  For more information about the program, visit https://www.hoby.org/ .  To apply for the nomination, submit a statement discussing why you are a match for the program and a resume of activities to the Woodson Career Center no later than Monday, 18 November.   

R2L NEXTGEN

19-24 July 2020, Washington, DC – The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute sponsors this all-expenses paid leadership experience designed for Latino students.  Students will spend a week exploring Washington, DC, learning how the government works, and participating in interactive learning opportunities to understand the top issues facing the Latino community.  Applicants must reside in the District of Columbia; Montgomery or Prince George’s county in Maryland; or in Alexandria City, Arlington, Fairfax, or Prince William counties in Virginia.  Applicants must be a current 10th or 11th grade student and demonstrate an interest in learning more about civic engagement.  While grades and a transcript must be included in the application, there is no minimum GPA requirement to apply.  All individuals are welcome to apply; however, preference is given to individuals with financial need.  For more information and to apply, visit https://chci.org/programs/r2l-nextgen/The application deadline is 16 February 2020.

FOCUSING ON THE FUTURE

1 February 2020, School of Education, College of William & Mary, 301 Monticello Avenue, Williamsburg, VA 23185 – This one-day program exposes participants to career opportunities related to the arts, humanities, and sciences and informs parents and counselors of considerations and guidelines for effective career and academic planning. Students will be exposed to (a) information about work habits and “habits of mind” that lead to successful careers in various fields, (b) an interactive discussion about a variety of career opportunities in a particular field, and (c) steps to take in preparation for specific careers. Parents and counselors will have the opportunity to attend multiple workshops, which will assist them in guiding their children with academic and career planning. GOLDFISH SWIM SCHOOL

DPS ACCOUNTING SCHOLARSHIP

DPS Accounting sponsors a $1,000 scholarship for a Senior or college student who writes a compelling essay and plans to attend an accredited college in the United States full-time.  Applicants must have a 3.0 or better GPA and provide an essay discussing: How to start a tax accounting and CPA firm.  CAUTION: dpsaccounting.com.au reserves the right to use the submitted articles as it wishes. FAIRFAX LIBRARY FOUNDATION UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP

The Fairfax Library Foundation sponsors scholarships of $200-$2,000 for students accepted to or enrolled in undergraduate academic degree programs (or single courses) who are employed, volunteering, or willing to volunteer up to 60 hours for Fairfax County Public Library, Fairfax County Library Foundation, or a FCPL-affiliated Friends of the Library group. A completed application must include a recommendation, GPA, activities for last three years, awards/honors, and transcript.  Applicants must agree to perform 15- 60 hours of volunteer service with FCPL, FCLF, or a FOL group if granted a scholarship, based on the size of the award.  Applications will be judged based on academic achievement, library-related work and/or volunteer experience, potential for future library work or volunteering, and specific competencies which demonstrate individual merit.  Applicants agree to a media release if they win.  For more information please visit https://www.fairfaxlibraryfoundation.org/scholarships or Naviance Student.  Application must be received by 15 January 2020.
