SUMMER BREAK

FREE NACAC CHECKLISTS FOR STUDENTS RESEARCHING COLLEGE OPTIONS

The National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) has created 6 checklists that students can use to help them ask questions while researching college options and speaking with college admissions professionals.  The topics include:  Diversity on Campus, Student Organizations and Support, Financial Aid, Academic Support, Campus Safety, and Housing.  These free checklists can be found at https://www.nacacfairs.org/askadmission.

NEW SPECIAL PROGRAMS

STUDENT LEADERSHIP ACADEMY

16 – 19 July – Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation for Childhood Cancer hosts this 4-day Student Leadership Academy (SLA) 2018 at Villanova University.  The program is for students interested in making a difference in the lives of kids with cancer and participants become official ambassadors of Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation across the country.  The program, lodging, and meals are provided free of charge to accepted students.  Participants must arrange their own transportation to Philadelphia.  To discover more about the program and to apply, visit https://www.alexslemonade.org/campaign/student-leadership-academy

VIRGINIA TECH MAKER FESTIVAL

NEW EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

HUNTER MILL ANIMAL HOSPITAL SEEKING HELP

Hunter Mill Animal Hospital located at 2935 Chain Bridge Road, Oakton, VA 22124, is seeking part-time Ward Attendants during the week and am/pm shifts on weekends and holidays.  Self-starters with sincere interests in pet care and/or exploring animal care as a profession are encouraged to apply.  Applicants must be 16 years or older.  This is a perfect summer job and can be a part-time job during the school year as Hunter Mill will work with your schedule.  Responsibilities include: walking, feeding, cleaning and maintaining patients (dogs and cats) in our extended care facility. This includes general facility maintenance, laundry and other pet care skills (ie. bathing, nail trims, general restraint & oral medicating) upon completion of training.  Hourly pay starts at minimum wage and increases after training is complete. FUND FOR THE PUBLIC INTEREST - The Fund for the Public Interest offers full-time, paid summer positions in their DC office working to help the agency build support, educate the public, and raise to tackle important environmental and social issues of our time.  Learn how to fundraise for a cause and develop campaign skills like organizing a press conference or running a phone bank.  This summer, the agency is working to protect wildlife and our oceans by banning foam cups and takeout containers.  Applicants need to be 17 years or older for paid positions.  Students younger than 17 are welcome to volunteer.  Apply at https://fundforthepublicinterest.org/apply.html?lcl=WASH or call 202-461-3839

NEW SCHOLARSHIPS

LEESA SOCIAL IMPACT SCHOLARSHIP

The Leesa Social Impact Scholarship will provide $10,000 to two exceptional students who will begin or are enrolled at an accredited college/university for the 2018 – 19 academic year.  Winners are also offered a mentorship program with the Leesa Social Impact department and a Leesa Mattress upon graduation.  Applicants must have a 3.0 or better GPA and be able to demonstrate a commitment to social action.  Although much of the application is hidden behind registration, applicants must submit, via YouTube or Vimeo Link, a 2 – 3 minute video outlining the role social action has had on your life so far, and the role you see it having in the future.  Visit https://www.leesa.com/pages/scholarship for details and to apply.  Completed applications are due 15 November.

MODERN CASTLE $1,000 SCHOLARSHIP

The Modern Castle team offers $1,000 to the producer of a short video (no longer than 5 minutes).  Applicants must be Seniors who will attend an accredited post-secondary institution in the U.S. in the 19 - 20 academic year or a current undergraduate student in the U.S.  Applicants must be U.S. citizens with a 3.0 or better GPA and able to document qualifications.  Videos must be uploaded to YouTube and answer the following questions: While you were growing up, what aspects of your home felt modern?  What technological trends do you think will most dramatically impact the way the modern home runs in the future?  What aspects of the home do you feel are most in need of modernization?  Using current and/or near-future technology, how would you modernize it?  Get all of the details at https://moderncastle.com/scholarships/Completed applications are due 1 October.

MEDICAL MALPRACTICE HELP COMMUNITY SERVICE SCHOLARSHIP

The law firm of Newsome Melton awards a $1,500 scholarship to a student with a 3.0 or better GPA who is a U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident with an impressive record of community service.  Applicants must be at least 17 years old, a Senior or enrolled in an accredited college or university.  Completed applications must include a transcript, resume documenting community service, and an essay (500 – 1000 words) discussing one of three topics: (1) What motivates you to perform community service?  (2) What skills did you learn during your community service that will help you in college or in your career?  (3) How do you plan to continue your community service during college and throughout your career?  CAUTION: Application materials become the property of Newsome Melton, and submission gives permission to publish your name and image.  Get all of the details at https://www.medicalmalpracticehelp.com/community-service-scholarship/Completed applications are due 15 December.

NEWSOME MELTON STUDENT LEADERSHIP AWARD

The law firm of Newsome Melton awards a $1,500 scholarship to a student leader with a 3.0 or better GPA who is a U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident with an impressive record of community service.  Applicants must be at least 17 years old, a Senior or enrolled in an accredited college or university.  Completed applications must include a transcript, resume documenting leadership experience, training, and accomplishments, and an essay (500 – 1000 words) discussing one of three topics: (1) How has your personal, academic, or community experience shaped you as a leader? (2) What is the role of a leader? OPEN WATER SCHOLARSHIP

Open Water will provide a $1,500 scholarship to a graduating Senior or college student who will be enrolled in a full-time undergraduate course of study towards a bachelor’s degree in the fall of 2019.  Applicants must have a 3.3 or better GPA, and a minimum 24 ACT or 1680 SAT score.  Applicants must also demonstrate leadership in entrepreneurship, environmental stewardship, and/or participatory citizenship, and provide an essay discussing How do you envision your field of study fitting into the future?  Visit https://www.getopenwater.com/scholarship/ to get all the details and to apply.  Completed applications are due 31 December.
